I would rather have the stupid island than the stupid notch. Agree with you there but they’re both terribly stupid and design decisions so everyone knows you’re using an iPhone. Just like the Mac has the notch so everyone knows it’s a MacBook from the front. I would prefer them put MacBook on the bottom of the display than a stupid design standard notch. Apple really has to ruin the user experience with design features to tell the world this is an Apple product. This is the biggest problem of Apple since Jobs was CEO. He would have never stood for stupidity. He thought the user interface was the most important part. And it’s been getting worse along with software for years.

Cannot wait until someone with some design sense can say no to marketing. The CEO obviously only cares about money by making himself wealthy by making shareholders wealthy. All the others stakeholders have gotten the shaft under Crook. This is why there’s a mass exodus of senior personnel and brain drain. Meta will pay in stock. Apple is so worried about the shareholders they’re willing to lose every bit of their employees, to ensure shareholders make bank so the very senior most people like Crook get bank and everyone else gets the shaft. Sad company to not look out for all stakeholders and this is what monopolistic capitalism looks like where a few big companies end up controlling everything. It’s not a good look and I applaud the EU for standing up against Apple. Now I would prefer all governments stand up for consumers and all stakeholders in companies. Companies are meant to return a profit not to only care about the top 1%.
The notch will be fine. The Dynamic Island will be fine. Stakeholders, shareholders, customers, management and Apple will be fine. Their products have been and will continue to be fine.

The aphorism: “when God closes a door he opens a window” applies here.

If/when they do start using under-screen FaceID, I wonder if they'll keep some form of the Dynamic Island. I actually find it pretty useful myself.

This just feels like one of those things that will be talked about for most of the year and then when the inevitable physical part leaks and case leaks start coming out it will become apparent it got pushed out again...

We’ve been waiting for years
Apple has over 10 patents relating to underscreen FaceIDu
BESIDES Apple needs to make a big deal of the iPhones 20th anniversary

That’s a fair point.
Maybe the 18/Pro with its smaller DI in 2026 will be a test run for the completely full screen design in 2027.
A little bit like the iPhone 13 that got a smaller notch compared to all previous iPhones, just for the 14 Pro to have the DI, although that was for different reasons.

I hope the Dynamic Island 🏝️ will still be available as an option (via virtual means) from within settings for all of us who have gotten so used to using it on a daily basis on so many apps these days

I can totally see the Dynamic Island becoming a purely software feature once they manage to implement FaceId under the display.

No activities? Full screen.
Playing music/navigating etc? The Dynamic Island will appear.
I'm sure the "dynamic" function will remain, but if the pill is gone then I imagine they wouldn't call it Dynamic Island anymore. Dynamic Shore if it comes from the edge? I guess the camera dot would still be there. Dynamic Buoy?

The notch/pill has nothing to do with marketing. Both on the phone and on the MacBooks, they were a way to maximize the use of the screen by moving some constant elements up out of the content areas. They are needed because there are multiple complex elements in that area that need a clear view of the world around them (cameras, sensors, faceID). So far, they have not been able to move those elements under the display either due to thickness constraints or because the display blocked the light from reaching the cameras and sensors. The Dynamic Island was created to make use of a hardware compromise and that gave a very useful tool for multitasking of time dependent activities. I expect the software feature of DI to persist even if the pill eventually does go away .

The notch on the MacBooks was a clever piece of design. It allowed them to move the whole menubar up and to expand the content area without needing to make the overall case larger. No, that is not just a camera, there are two other sensors and some mounting hardware in a very thin lid. Laptops with cameras down near the keyboard are know as nostril cams for a reason. That perspective is totally unnatural.

I won't pretend that there aren't other design choices that I disagree with (looking at you Mac Settings app), but the notches and Dynamic Island are not among those.

The notch on their laptops is larger than what is believably-needed for the camera. And its size has stayed the same as the old iPhone while the iPhone's camera cutout has continued to shrink.

In my opinion, they can get rid of the camera on the MacBook Pro entirely and limit it to the MacBook Air. I never use the laptop camera.

I think the iPhone notch looks nice, but I also think it’s takes too much reaching to do the swiping motions from the top and bottom of the screen one-handed.

So from Dynamic Island to Dynamic Dot and when the all-screen design arrives, the dynamic island will only appear when in use... but it will cease to be black and become transparent: New Dynamic Liquid Glass Island

Agreed. I would take no camera over ruining my user interface with the computer.

You might be surprised to learn that the notch on the MacBooks has more than just a camera in it.

So it has:
  • a 1080p camera
  • a TrueTone light color sensor (for adjusting the color temperature of the display)
  • an ambient light sensor (for adjusting the brightness of the display)
  • and a camera status LED (the green light to let you know the camera is activated).

Fantastic to hear about this. This means that 20th anniversary model could indeed have an all screen display. Was fearing that only FaceID will be under the screen for 2027 model. For 2026, if it happens, will definitely be for Pro models only with base model getting it in 2028. Don't think the dynamic island is going anywhere.
