Apple's two-generations-away iPhone 18 Pro models will likely feature under-screen Face ID, according to The Information.

The paywalled report today cited a source who said the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will have only a small hole in top-left corner of the screen, to accommodate the front-facing camera, with all Face ID hardware moved under the screen.

With under-screen Face ID, the report said the iPhone 18 Pro models would no longer have a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen. However, it is unclear if that means the Dynamic Island feature would be discontinued.

Display industry analyst Ross Young also previously claimed that iPhone 18 Pro models would feature under-screen Face ID, so this rumor is now backed by multiple sources. Apple is expected to introduce the devices in September 2026.

iPhone 18 Pro Models Rumored to Feature Under-Screen Face ID With Top-Left Camera Hole
😂 iPhones looking more and more like Android phones. First was larger screen iPhones. Next up is the Google Pixel camera bar. After that comes the pin hole front camera in the upper left corner.

R.I.P. Dynamic Island?

If the iPhone 17 is coming out this year (2025), then the iPhone 18 will be out next year (2026).

What year do you think we're in right now?
I wouldn’t be shocked to see them release an iPhone 17 (normal) and 18 (Pro line) this year so they can release the 19 (normal) with the iPhone XX being the anniversary Pro model in 2026.

I mean, that is fine, but the notch doesn’t bother me at all, but, I know I’m in the minority, at least here on MR
I don't think you're in the minority here. There is simply a very vocal minority on MR who don't like X, Y, Z feature or X, Y, Z person working at Apple. Some of this minority are also the individuals who regularly down-vote or angry vote commenters who are supportive of Apple.

It’s a terrible idea that I hope isn’t true. Putting the camera off to the side like this will cause the same problem the older iPads had when it had the camera off to the side when it was in landscape orientation during FaceTime calls. Doing this on the much more used iPhone would be just so dumb and will cause a weird parallax issue when using that camera for anything. And for what? Is it just that awful to have a little bit of black space at the top center of a smartphone? These are such none problems

I agree with this decision and it makes sense. iPhone has always had an identity whether it's from the sides the front or the back. In this case the identity of iPhone has always been its bezels with the circular home button. Then the conception of the notch. Then the pill. I hate seeing all modern smartphone looking exactly the same from the front with that ugly disgusting center punch hole. If they had two center punch holes it would be far more attractive and an "Identity" Anyways in the corner is so hot and I want an iPhone with this uniqueness.

I'd be okay with this I think. I rarely use the front camera and the status bar is probably more useful without a cutout in the middle. Dynamic Island stuff could get tricky though.

Why?! After all this time why implement the one thing people have been waiting for like this. The center cutout makes the most sense. It leaves all other UI elements in their proper places. It keeps the phone symmetrical. A side hole punch (especially if we still want some version of the dynamic island UI) makes no sense.

I really hope this rumor isn't true.

I think the camera hole will be centered. That's a more Apple like design, plus flagships from other companies nowadays have the camera hole in middle.

The older models from other companies used to have the camera in one of the top sides, but everyone has moved away from that now.

Apple's first consideration is styling and making iPhone instantly recognizable. Placing the camera on the left falls inline with Apple's philosophy. Some will like it, some will not, Apple doesn't care as they have always believed they know what's best for the customer.

This looks like the first step towards an all screen iPhone. Will be nice if it happens but it is possible for Apple to directly go to all screen design in 2027 for Pro models and in the same year, the base models can have this single hole on the display. But even for that, don't think the hole will be on the left corner, it will most likely be in the center.
