Apple's iPhone 18 lineup will introduce a major leap in memory performance, according to new information shared today by Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station. Apple is reportedly planning to equip the 2026 models with a high-capacity six-channel LPDDR5X memory configuration, significantly upping the memory bandwidth for future AI features and multitasking.

Expanding the memory bandwidth should enable faster app switching, smoother multitasking, and significantly improved AI capabilities – all areas Apple would likely to heavily invest in as part of its broader Apple Intelligence strategy. Paired with the A20 Pro chip, which will reportedly be built using TSMC's third-generation 3nm process, the iPhone 18 Pro models would stand to benefit the most.

The Weibo account Digital Chat Station has a decent track record with Apple product rumors, and they have previously shared accurate information about unreleased hardware from the broader semiconductor supply chain. Still, Apple's precise hardware plans could still evolve ahead of the iPhone 18's launch late next year.

Before then, if supply chain shortages can be overcome, the iPhone 17 series is expected to see a move to 12GB of RAM as standard across all models. That transition is likely to set the stage for the more aggressive hardware upgrades rumored for 2025.

iPhone 16 Pro buyers really got burned. We thought we would have AI and we didn’t, we thought our phones were ready for it and they weren’t. Hopefully someone wants to buy it from me at a good price because this feels like the iPad 3 all over again. I can’t believe apple did this twice to their users.

How many generations of phone will it take for it to actually function as promised?

2, 3? (we are already at 1 )

Frankly. I don't care, just saying.

It's so weird to hear Apple market products talked about like this

"Vapor cooling" (or w/e it's called) and "HP 6 channel memory"

Gives me "RGB Gaming PC vibes"

I certainly didn't get burned. Love the phone and the photos I make with it. Also... knowing in advance AI is a work in progress, rather than a here it is finished and complete technology, I have nothing to complain about.

I wonder if we will see this new memory tech in the M series of chips. It would be a great surprise to see this new 6 channel memory arriving to the M5 Macs first…

I don't feel burned. I didn't buy the 16 Pro with AI in mind, whatsoever. It does 100% of what I want it to do, and as long as it gets OS updates for the next 4+ years, I'm good.

It feels like there are forces in this thread working to whip up anti-Apple animus

Not that I have a dog in this fight for or against a corporation. It's just strange to me to want to manipulate others, particularly without being able to see a compelling interest in doing so

Nah, its just funny how we barely know what the phone is going to do in 4 months, but people are reporting on ideas that they hope the phone next year might have.

Same; seems like they played us lol
Anytime you hear 👂 we are delaying features then you should already know the device isn’t ready.

16 series came out in September and Apple 🍎 said most AI features would be delayed until November-December time frame. So the 16 series wasn’t AI ready from the Get Go.

These rumors are making my 16 Pro feel like it might not really be AI ready...

We iPhone 6 buyers really got burned.
The 6S came out a year later with double the RAM and a faster processor, what a rip off.

Like yes, the iPhone 18 will have better specifications than the iPhone 16. Was this news to you?

Do you have any indication that "app switching" is bandwidth rather than RAM capacity and CPU constrained or were you just writing stuff lol

Surely going to be mostly aimed at AI with much more embarrassingly parallel scaling than anything CPU side
