Upon reflection, the iPhone 16 series were being touted to be compatible with the AI Apple was working on probably 18 months ago or longer. Apparently, that version of AI was/is dead upon arrival and Apple now goes back to the drawing board.

Logic then says the iPhone 16 series may not actually be compatible with the next AI that could require 16GB of memory like in all the "M" series computers now.

As long as the 5G modem works in my iPhone 16 Pro Max and I can make and receive calls, then the basic function of a phone is still operational and useful. I have turned off all the AI stuff I can find on the iPhone. All the other new "features" appear to work but I use very few of them.

My wife and I have the best Apple iPhone of the time before the tariffs night mare started. The cost was the typical highest possible in the Apple world.

The current tariff policy chaos will impact both pricing and availabilty.

The 17 series might have 12GB of memory and the 18 series might have 16 GB of memory. So we shall wait until the 18 series to see if it is worthwhile to upgrade (providing I am still alive).

These rumors are making my 16 Pro feel like it might not really be AI ready...

Oh you young'uns !

I still remember being burned HARD when Bill Gates promised "true Plug-n-Play Win95." Its thirty years gone now; that disaster was a life lesson never to repeat, ever again.

The difference being that the 16 doesn't really deliver on what was originally advertised.
Which, as far as you or I know, has nothing to do with the hardware.
Until Apple actually cancels features planned for the 16, all we know up to this point is that the features are delayed.
There hasn’t been nothing, anything, not even a Gurman report, saying that the features will come out, but won’t run on the 16. That’s just speculation that people have come up with out of their heads, based off of nothing other than “Apple bad”.
There is absolutely no indication that just because the iPhone 17 might have more RAM, that the iPhone’s with 8 GB of RAM will suffer in terms of feature availability.

that’s a wild conclusion to jump to based off of pretty much nothing.
It also completely ignores so many other factors, like the fact that it wasn’t just the iPhone 16 personal context was announced for, but also Macs and iPads going back to the M1.
It was also supposed to run on the iPhone 15 Pro, not just the 16 series but also parts of the 15 series as well.
So far, we have absolutely no indication that that will be changing.
Apple is absolutely not going to change of features system requirements from “A17/M1 and up” to “A19 and M5 and up”. Get real. That would literally open them up to more lawsuits, and this time they wouldn’t just be nuisance lawsuits.

"Plug 'n Pray".

It pays to not be an early adopter.

Cancelled my iPhone 17 preorder.

Tim Apple is gonna give you a whoopin'.

Apple's iPhone 18 lineup will introduce a major leap in memory performance, according to new information shared today by Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station. Apple is reportedly planning to equip the 2026 models with a high-capacity six-channel LPDDR5X memory configuration, significantly upping the memory bandwidth for future AI features and multitasking.

Expanding the memory bandwidth should enable faster app switching, smoother multitasking, and significantly improved AI capabilities – all areas Apple would likely to heavily invest in as part of its broader Apple Intelligence strategy. Paired with the A20 Pro chip, which will reportedly be built using TSMC's third-generation 3nm process, the iPhone 18 Pro models would stand to benefit the most.

The Weibo account Digital Chat Station has a decent track record with Apple product rumors, and they have previously shared accurate information about unreleased hardware from the broader semiconductor supply chain. Still, Apple's precise hardware plans could still evolve ahead of the iPhone 18's launch late next year.

Before then, if supply chain shortages can be overcome, the iPhone 17 series is expected to see a move to 12GB of RAM as standard across all models. That transition is likely to set the stage for the more aggressive hardware upgrades rumored for 2025.

ANOTHER promise for FUTURE AI features?

No, thank you.

We iPhone 6 buyers really got burned.
The 6S came out a year later with double the RAM and a faster processor, what a rip off.

Like yes, the iPhone 18 will have better specifications than the iPhone 16. Was this news to you?
Is it news to you the fact that AI isn’t ready despite Apple saying it was? Is it news to you they lied to their customers to sell the iPhone 16 because they knew they didn’t have anything ready, were just showing concepts, and didn’t want to lose customers to the competition?

Anytime you hear 👂 we are delaying features then you should already know the device isn’t ready.

16 series came out in September and Apple 🍎 said most AI features would be delayed until November-December time frame. So the 16 series wasn’t AI ready from the Get Go.
Yes, November-December, it’s April and the reports say we are looking at 2027 at the earliest for AI to be functional

Yeahhh, it's time to start getting pumped for the ALL NEW iPhone 18!!! This will be the best, most powerful iPhone that Apple has ever released. And, for the first time ever, the ALL NEW iPhone 18 will feature best-in-class, six-channel memory. This revolutionary advancement in memory is a game-changer for Apple Intelligence. Apple can't wait to see the incredible things customers are able to do with the ALL NEW iPhone 18. Apple thinks you're gonna love it.

I certainly didn't get burned. Love the phone and the photos I make with it. Also... knowing in advance AI is a work in progress, rather than a here it is finished and complete technology, I have nothing to complain about.
So you are ok with Apple lying, saying AI was going to be released last year but now it’s probably going to be released until 2027

I'm not sure if you remember the difference but plug-n-play devices were significantly easier to setup. In some cases, they really did "just work".

Non plug-n-play devices were pretty terrible to setup though. Anyone remember having to set IRQ values?

That’s not what the reports say.
2027 is for the completely restructured LLM based Siri, which (and this is important so pay attention) Apple *has not* announced, Apple *has not* ever publicly spoken about, and has *only existed* in the land of Gurman newsletters.
Let’s focus on the stuff Apple actually *did* delay, and that is personal context, on screen awareness, and app intents. Current reporting is that all of these will arrive in the fall, and there is absolutely no reason to believe they won’t run on the iPhone 16, or the iPhone 15 Pro.
