Apple is reportedly preparing to begin trial production of the iPhone 18 after Chinese New Year, according to Weibo-based leaker Fixed Focus Digital.

The claim suggests small-scale manufacturing runs will start once factories return to normal operations following the Lunar New Year shutdown, which typically ends in late February.

The Chinese leaker claims that production lines for the iPhone 18 Pro models have already been set up, indicating that the Pro hardware design has already been locked in. The leaker adds that the scope of external design changes is expected to be smaller than some may be anticipating.

That lines up with reports that the iPhone 18 Pro models will feature the same general design as the iPhone 17 Pro models, with the triple-lens rear camera system residing within the new camera plateau.

The report also fits with Apple's rumored shift to a split iPhone launch cycle. Under the reported strategy, the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to debut in September 2026 alongside Apple's first foldable iPhone, while the standard iPhone 18 will follow later with the iPhone 18e for a spring 2027 launch.

Apple's iPhone 18 models could feature a simplified Camera Control button without a capacitive sensor to cut costs, but pressure sensing will still be available for all of the button functions. The standard iPhone 18 could be also upgraded to 12GB RAM, while adopting TSMC's 2nm architecture for the A20 chip, but beyond that we don't have many specifics about what else to expect at this time.

As for the iPhone 18 Pro models, they are expected to debut Apple's A20 Pro chip and could potentially feature under-screen Face ID technology, not to mention a variable aperture lens, and a new three-layer stacked image sensor made by Samsung. Apple is also expected to use the device to debut its next-generation, custom-made C2 modem.

Confusing consumers more and more with this fragmented product line and now, fragmented release cycles.
Are costumers really confused though? In my experience with average costumers (not tech enthusiasts), when they want/need a new iPhone they just go to the store and buy whatever the latest iPhone that's in their price range is, or whichever one catches their fancy in the store.

My iPhone 16 pro max was touted to be AI ready along with other never seen features with the increase of memory to 8GB but AI and the other features did not show up. My iPhone 17 Pro Mac has 12GB of memory and AI may not show up until next year. The rumors think the iPhone 18 will have 16GB of memory. Please note that the Macs were bumped from 8GB to 16 GB of memory for AI.

Would one be correct to think then the 16GB number is the minimum memory for Apple AI? Was that a sucker punch for those who acquired the 16 and 17 models?

The reason for me getting a iPhone ProMax 17 was to have the same size image sensors for all three cameras for an upcoming trip.

At this point, Apple Intelligence is a complete non issue for me. I got a 17PM coming from a 13 Pro just because it was pretty much time.

Huge improvement in so many areas and I can already do anything I want with AI on the phone through lots of other means.

And to be fair, what little they have added is not entirely useless. I do sometimes use Writing Tools just to quickly reformat a block of text. Clean Up works well enough I no longer need to subscribe to a third party image editor.

This is a FOMO-driven split launch cycle strategy. First, the Pro model is always released first with the new number (for example, 18), which pushes you to buy the Pro if you want access to the 18 series earlier. On the other hand, if you wait another half a year to get the regular iPhone 18, the 19 Pro will arrive fairly quickly after that. As a result, your regular 18 already feels like an “old model.”

Doesn’t the battery increase tho? AI says it does (2~3 hours) That’s not enough for AI but certainly a start.

Macs have higher memory requirements because more apps are running in parallel on macOS, and due to other design differences in the OS. Apple Intelligence requires memory in addition to the memory required by the apps running, which tends to be significantly higher on macOS than on iOS.

Furthermore, Apple Intelligence may use larger models, or more models in parallel, on macOS than on iOS, or on iPhone 18 Pro than on iPhone 16 Pro. “Apple Intelligence” isn’t a singular thing.

They didn't mention the Air in this release. Previous rumors have suggested that the Air 2 will launch with the base 18 models in the spring of 2027 if they launch at all, which I sure hope they do cause I love this phone.
