and what are the current shortcomings apple targets to address with this design change?

I see a screen replacement price increase in our future...

it's obvious that we're not getting a special 20th anniversary iPhone and the Pro models will in fact be the anniversary models.

We already know the phone will have a hole punch for a camera cut out, it will NOT be all screen.

Someone please explain use case for this. 🤔
I don’t think you’re supposed to use a case. It would cover the new screen areas.

Or you could set the bezels to look black or pink to make it look like you have it in a case.

Or you could free up a little main screen space and move the time and Wi-Fi icons to the sides or top. And put reminders and other random stuff that will no longer hijack the main screen. Or just for a separate light show around the edges.

If you haven’t got a case.

Hmmm.....not quite sure where my mind is this morning, but for some odd reason the
new design brought a suppository to mind.

Might should get me my first cup of coffee.

Amen. I am so tired of gestures taking over my phone and doing unwanted functions, when I touch the phone wrong or wipe some dust off my screen. Give me the option to turn that crap off, and give me some real navigation buttons and a little bit of bezel to hold on to. I don't understand the obsession with corner to corner screen at the expense of reduced functionality. We wouldn't even have the stupid waste of space that is the "Dynamic Island" if we just had a little bit of top bezel.
A top bezel would be a waste of space.

This sounds beautiful, and it also sounds like I'm not particularly interested. I can't imagine a case that doesn't ruin this beauty, and I'm enough of a klutz that I can't live without a case.

This sounds like the no-touch rumor from ages ago. I bet it’s capacitive buttons replacing physical ones and a normal oled flat screen. I do think Face ID behind the screen works. Camera not so much yet. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s glass all around like the pre 17 pro backs. But screen on all sides seems far fetched. But who knows Apple is smarter than me 🤷🏼‍♀️

I just hope that with these new advanced designs, we still have the option of getting a "normal" form factor with a screen we can put face down to not distract during meetings or a hinged display that could possibly wear out, etc, without also sacrificing being able to get the top of the line processors and sensors and other features. I want a state of the art phone, not an experiment in my pocket. My 2¢ nobody cares about.

A top bezel would be a waste of space.
And cut out notches or holes are a waste of usable screen space. Both are ways to accommodate camera/face Id sensors so neither option makes the phone meaningfully shorter.

We each have our preferences on aesthetics, but I’ll happily take the straightforward simplicity of a small top bezel with a purpose.

My first thought is someone asking an Apple Store employee: "Cool, but what happens if I drop the phone?" to which the employee replies, "Oh, it shatters no matter how it lands, so you have to buy a case". Then the customer asks "then why does this 'feature' exist if I'm covering it with a case?". The employee stairs blankly.

You don't, it just floats in the air in a pure white room while you say the word aluminum with too many syllables.
Please don’t confuse ‘aluminum’ with ‘aluminium’.
(IMHO, the five syllable version with nine letters is the better sounding of the two — and I’m quite sure that has nothing to do with my upbringing! 😎🇮🇪☘️)

Apple did a curved display before and it sucked. You either could not use a screen protector or you had to have one that only covered about 70-80% of the screen. Right now I am planning to keep my 17 Pro Max for several years anyway (but I have been saying that and doing annual upgrades since the 14 series). But, I have zero desire to purchase any phone with a curved display.

If this is actually something else the marketing people need to leak better descriptions.

Calm down everyone. It'll still have buttons and look more like a iPhone X but where the display goes into the curve creating a near bezel-free look. Think Apple Watch 7-9.
Yes. Exactly what I am thinking. And, that is terrible. Like the earlier iPhones with a display that curved at the edge and there was no way to protect it without having a partial screen protector. Nope. Enjoy it if you like it but I will keep my current phone until they no longer have that design. Or if I need a new phone and that is what Apple has available. There are also great Android phones. I have used them before and will certainly be happy to return if needed.
