My only complain is that Safari is very very buggy...

Clearly this isn't your only complaint, which goes on for several lines and contains more !!!'s than I use in an entire year. (I'm just ribbing you, don't take this as an insult)

Sorry to hear that your upgrade didn't work as well as mine, but looking over this forum it appears your experience is far from average. I think it's important to remember that YMMV, and in that case, you might want to consider doing a wipe-n-clean. It's not that difficult, and who knows, maybe you'll get all the greatness we're seeing?

It's also possible that your usage pattern is the part Apple put in the "other group", as in "the majority of users" doesn't include you. My usage pattern is that the phone spends the VAST majority of time in it's "off" mode, followed by relatively short (1/2 hour) phone calls once a day, two or three 2 to 5 minute calls, an hour or so of iPod (mostly podcasts, mostly video) and periodic (3 or 4 times a day) checks on Bloomberg and Facebook.

This is why I think the major change is to the power use when the phone is idle. This could be a result of changes to the broadband firmware. When you're actually sending packets out to the network (voice or data) power is going to be used and that's basically that. However, when the phone is idle and only looking for towers, that is primarily a low-cost reception-side issue, and should require very little power. The fact that my phone would be almost empty after a night of doing nothing suggests this was a problem in the old software.

So if my intuition is correct, and the primary change here is the cellular reception software, then the fact that my usage pattern results in much better battery life is not at all surprising. Nor is the fact that yours hasn't improve. Now we get to argue who's pattern is more typical :)

I noticed that the SMS history now loads only partially unless you scroll to the top and tap to load more. So much faster now. Nice.

Anyone else noticing its taking a longer time now when doing the "Syncing Photos" within iTunes when the photos on my pc haven't changed?

The other thing I said is that the battery life is the same as before!

The upgrade worked very well. Everything else is fast and I like that.

It doesn't. It just shows you more bars. Apple gambled that perception > reality, and so far, it is working.

You are most likely right on the actual signal strength. However, you forgot one important piece in the equation:

The new firmware may not necessarily improve the raw signal, but what it can do, and it probably did, is to provide and sustain better reception/3G speed with the same signal level.

Number of bars can be programed. But in this particular case, I don't think it is just a matter of "faking more bars." The new firmware does provide better reception quality (likely with the same signal level) as well as an more accurate representation of signal sustainability then previous versions of firmware.

My experience with 2.1 has been positive. The reception seems to be better (Field test mode, around -83 compared with around -89 with 2.0.2, with the phone sitting on my desk in the dock, next to my MacBook Pro).

It's great so far :)

Most of the time you won't be able to use edge and be in a phone call at the same time. I heard someone say that it depends on the tower, but I have never been able to use EDGE and talk at the same time...

It's just the way EDGE works. EDGE uses the voice channel for actual transfers and simply packages the data into it. WCDMA (3G) uses a number of channels for whatever you need, voice, data, SMS, whatever.

Ah ha!

I just got the same message that others have mentioned in Safari, about not being able to complete the operation.

Immediately prior to this I noticed that the icon flickered from WiFi (under the table in front of me) to 3G and then back again very quickly.

So if anyone else gets this message: are you near a WiFi source?

The genious feature on the iPhone doesn't have anything to do with buying songs from the iTunes store...

Genious in iTunes 8 makes you buy songs from iTunes, but really is a great feature! I discovered songs I would never buy without Genious. Apple wins but I also get to listen to music I like. It is a win-win situation...

Nobody is making you buy anything. Did you know that you can turn the Genius sidebar OFF? Even with the Genius sidebar off, you can still full enjoy Genius without the SUGGESTIONS that the iTunes Store makes. I just don't like the sidebar because it's ugly. I still enjoy using the Genius button at the bottom though (which doesn't make you buy anything. It uses songs that are already installed on your computer).

Wow, people need to learn how to use something before they just go and say "Genius makes you buy songs from iTunes".

I tried alexeismertin's way to downgrade to 2.0.2. But it won't. iTunes 7.7.1, when run from a different (not guest) account, says:

Code:
The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 8.0 or later. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

PS: My iPhone is now locked and on 2.1.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Pacon!

Well the one thing you MUST have you left out and that was the GUEST account. Try again with guest.

It doesn't make you buy anything. You can hide the sidebar, and you'll never see a recommendation to buy a song.

Use the button on the bottom-right (looks like a play button) to show/hide the genius sidebar.

My big gripe with my iPhone is that it doesn't auto-connect to my WiFi networking when locking/unlocking. It's unsecured (MAC filtered, some devices on the network can't even deal with WEP). I can connect from settings, but next time I lock the phone, it's gone until I go back to settings. PITA.

I definitely do not have this problem. I lock/unlock all the time and I see it re-connect after unlocking after about 2 seconds.

Could this be an SSID issue perhaps?

I just noticed that this morning. I've got every text between my son and I for the past year. It was beginning to get pretty huge. This is a pretty good solution (I guess I could just delete them, huh?)

2.1 deleted the ringtones I had created with iToner. The ringtones I purchased stayed on the phone. Since I legally own music I would like to use as a ring tone and that music isn't available on the store, I'm not happy about that.

I am absolutely loving the new firmware.

Everything's quicker, I haven't dropped a call yet, battery life seems MUCH better (how'd they do that?) and apps load insanely fast.

I spent about 15-20 minutes trying to get an app to crash. Played Monkey Ball, messed around with BeatMaker (big app), played a few other games, ran Pandora, played more Monkey Ball, then BeatMaker again. Finally, i was sent back to the home screen while using BeatMaker and tapping on a sample pad. Normally at this point, I would have had to restart my phone if I wanted to run the app again. Nope, tapped on the icon, and I was running again, and nothing has crashed since.

I was never frustrated enough with my phone to consider "selling it and getting a BlackBerry," because even with a bug or a lag or a reboot here and there, it's still an INCREDIBLE device. Nothing else compares, especially when it comes to media and apps. But now I can't really find anything to complain about. I think it's pretty safe to assume that we're at a stable ground to get new features in the coming upgrades :)

:apple: = amazing!

use garage band. cut it down to the clip you want, then just export to be a ringtone. it goes right into itunes.

no reason to not be happy anymore!

My Calls Drop MORE now, and SMS fail MORE

I eagerly updated to the new 2.1, from 2.0.2 around 11am Friday EST. I used my work PC, which isn't the normal PC I sync with. It was updated to iTunes 8.0 as well.

After the update my iPhone showed 5 bars and a slightly different color 3G icon. However, it took me from 2 to 3 times to send an SMS message. Previously my SMS messages rarely failed to send, unless I was at less than 1 bar.

I made phone calls on the way back from work down I-95 and dropped calls continually. I tried calling back on number 7 times and got "call failed". Calls took longer to connect for some reason. I finally turned the phone off and on again in hopes that would make a difference. I was finally able to call the person back, but they were jilted and told me to call back later that night from my home phone. Needless to say, I was dissappointed.

I went home and tried to restore my iPhone to 2.0.1, but iTunes wouldn't let me. I even tried the control-shift-Restore trick (option on mac) and the restore always failed half-way through.

I finally gave up and let it put 2.1 back on. Some posts say if you put a clean copy on it works better and you get a few additional features. How does one put a "clean copy" on? Has anyone else had the same experience I had with WORSE call or SMS service? Again, my service was much better before the update, which is surprising. Or is it? Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

J.

Just select to restore in iTunes. If upgraded previously then it will do a full restore this time.
