I am also having problems with zen pinball. It starts up, and sounds play as if it's working, but there is no picture.

In the game Putt Putt the sound has become distorted. All of my other games sound fine. I am going to try to redownload the games tomorrow.

I like the new 3G icon. Just my preference.

Location services operates for me as it did in the previous version. Not sure what you mean by this.
What I've noticed:

Cons:

- Battery life cut in half by mysterious background activity (now I suddenly have 10 hours of "usage" listed, despite having been asleep for 10 hours)

- Zen Pinball stopped working

- Butt ugly 3G/EDGE icons

- Enabling Location Services from an app went from easy to awkward

Pros:

+ App icons stay in place after updates

HOLY CRAP!!

i thought that connectivity issues were just going to be fixed on the 3G - i assumed it was going to be a fix that worked with switch from edge to 3G which was where the calls were being dropped..

WELL, i have a 2G which i love. But i have ALWAYS had such crappy service at my house that i HAD to put a landline it. it was about 80% NOT connected, 10% on and off connection, and 10% connected solid enough to make a call.

right now, i have 5 FREAKIN BARS!!! i can not BELIEVE that the phone's software would make such a difference in reception. I always though teh ONLY fixes were phone hardware (antennas and such) and network equipment.

It doesn't. It just shows you more bars. Apple gambled that perception > reality, and so far, it is working.

Updated on my original iPhone from 2.0 to 2.1 and skipped the 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates.

Didn't do the restore at all and just did the update. It works great. I don't see any point of doing a restore unless it tells you so.

To whoever asked a couple pages back in this thread, I think update and restore are the same (minus the whole wipe everything) unless the update fails halfway through...then the restore probably is a must.

Not true. Yes, I definitely have more bars in 3g than ever, but I'm not getting bounced back and forth between edge and 3g anymore. Staying in 3g mode is nice!

I haven't had a single dropped call since upgrading to 2.1 here in Orange County. Of course I almost never had a dropped call since I got my 3G iPhone and still get better service then I ever have with any other cell phone or provider. It shows me as having more bars then before update, but still same quality. I suppose I am luckier then most.

Everything is faster, no more keyboard lag. Faster sync, faster app downloads, faster opening everything. Also, I like the improvements in the ipod.

This update fixed every issue I had with the phone. The new 3G and E icons scared me at first.

Did they do this because of the way the iPhone switches from 3G to EDGE? Meaning, if they keep the bars at a higher level, it won't switch?

Or did they do it just to make it SEEM like we are getting better reception?

I've always thought the bars thing as overrated. "More bars in more places". Means nothing to me if the actual signal is low. I've had 5 bars and had dropped calls and I've had 1 bar and had fine calls.

Help!

I downloaded 2.1 by mistake and now my $1200 (bought it from Egypt!) 16GB 1st Gen iPhone is dead lock :(

I can't restore to 2.0.2 and my current 2.1 is locked :( Is there anyway I can get back my iPhone?

Please help. It's urgent!

Thanks.

Pacon!

Not impressed, now annoyed

I was hoping for the usage issue to be fixed where it's blank after connecting to the USB.

Apple's created the illusion that the new 3g display is a result of improved reception when nothing is changed: chip issue. Apple should recall all 3g units and replace them with another chipset not from the company they had used.

Safari still crashes asmuch as ever.

Not much improvement when it comes to keyboard or contact list lag.

Speaker volume is a bit higher is the only noticeble improvement.

It's a real shame that apple has sunk do low to mislead and use trickery so that people will believe their iPhone issues are fixed. I can smell a lawsuit in the near future.

If you want ver2.1 unlocked then you will have to wait for iPhone-dev team to release pawnage in next couple of weeks. I am waiting for this as well.

I dont know if Apple keeps a repository available to customers for downloading older versions. I guess not! But may be, just mat be you should be able to get from some other website.....

Totally wrong. But A+ for arrogance. I left a message a few pages ago showing the results of a large number of bandwidth tests using testmyiphone.com right before and right after upgrading to 2.1.

My average 3G performance has gone from 360 kbps to 890 kbps. Thats a factor of 2.5 TIMES BETTER.

Several other posters have found similar improvements. Our experience is that this is much, much more than a cosmetic improvement. But good work on taking a guess and calling it fact.

Second that. Before the update I would get 3G data speeds of 1.5-2.2 Mbit. Now, on the same location I get consistent dataspeeds of 3.0-3.1 Mbit. Furthermore, there are a lot of people who didn't have any reception before and now they do (I've yet to test this for myself though).

you can send it to their mobile using an email address format.

just send to [phone number]@vzwpix.net for verizon, and similar things to other networks. I can't remember them exactly, but it works just fine, and you dont get charged since its an email.
search on the web there is a site telling you how to do it.

Wow. that's totally cool. Nice tip :)

The speedy app installs are amazing.

I stopped updating and downloading apps when I was away from my computer because they would often lock up my phone, not install for an hour, or completely require a restore.

Now its, install and 20 seconds later the app is up and ready. I will definitely be buying more apps now!

I've had five bars on 3G and I can't get Internet, keeps saying the server is not responding, it's fine once I switch wifi on; I think the change in 3G reception after the 2.1 update is just cosmetic, and I hate to say that because I really wanted it to work. Everything else seems a lot more responsive though, no more text lag, quicker installation of apps etc.

I for one can say the update worked.

A friend of mine had issues with receiving any calls on 3G with the iPhone (and her grandmother's non 3G phone, which wouldn't work.) We called the phone MANY times and not one time did the phone rings. I turned off 3G and the phone worked perfectly with EDGE. Every call would go through. We then updated to 2.1, turned on 3G, and the calls would all work! The phone first started as "no service" when the phone was in 3G and after walking around a little, the phone went to full bars and the calls worked perfectly. Will find about the dropped calls she was experiencing beforehand to see if that issue has been fixed or at least made better. BTW, we are in Orange County, a notoriously bad spot for AT&T.

YES!!!! NO MORE ******** DELAY WHEN TEXTING AND ON CONTACTS PAGE!!!!!!! :D

APPLICATIONS INSTALL AT LIGHT SPEED!!!! :D

"nothing has changed"? You have NO IDEA what technical changes Apple may or may not have made in the 2.1 firmware, nor if there was ever a legitimate chipset issue at all. Everything in your post is baseless speculation with no supporting evidence. Hardly a position to be demanding product recalls.

Based on all the reports and information from MacRumors et al, it appears there was a serious bug in one of the low-level UMTS power algorithms that was causing most of the issues with connection dropouts, dropped calls, and generally poor 3G service. Based on the forum comments here and Appleinsider.com, It appears at least some (many?) people are having a better experience after updating to 2.1. but we certainly don't know anything *for sure*, and that is why we have to wait and see.

It's a real shame that apple has sunk do low to mislead and use trickery so that people will believe their iPhone issues are fixed. I can smell a lawsuit in the near future.

lawsuit? You have got to be kidding. You think someone should initiate a lawsuit everytime they have issues with a cellphone?

Woah! consistent 3.1 Mbits? Perhaps we'll see that here in the States by 2015... ;(

Probably. I have a Gen1 iPhone and I don't have it either. :-(

*sigh* Enable genius in itunes THEN sync. Apple won't ignore 1st gen users. :p

Not true. Syncing on its own does absolutely nothing. You need to make sure there are songs loaded on your device that work with genius.SO:

-turn genius on in itunes and let it do its thing.
-check which songs work with genius (plenty don't...unless you're listening to mainstream bands, it won't work - expect this situation to improve over time though!). Load a few of those songs onto the device.
-Play one of those songs in iPod on the iPhone. Press the screen, and the little genius (atom) icon should be there under the 'play/progress' bar.Press it, and walla.

Even then you need at least 25 compatible songs on your device for it to work.
