I wonder if anyone else has noticed that after the 2.1 software update, the sound quality of voicemails seems a bit worse? Not complaining, just wondering if anyone else has noticed anything like this.

Best,
Crandel

Yes!!! At first I thought it was the person leaving the message. But it isn't.

If you're not playing Cro-magnon Rally all day, the battery life after the upgrade is vastly improved. I charged it sunday morning, used it pretty often during they day with push notifications, location services, and 3G on. That would previously have left me with a 20% charge late in the day. When I go up this morning, there was still better than a 50% charge. To me this is bigger than even the stability improvements. Additionally, 3G seems a lot more consistent, I haven't seen an app crash, apps install very fast (unless it is a big download), no more sluggish contacts. It's good to see they focused on the most important things first. Now that the foundational stuff is solid, I think we'll now start seeing some sought-after features appear.
Spot on. My battery is still at 100% today after 3 hours 43 mins usage (an hour of which is iPod) plus standby of 1 day 0 hours (did not charge last night!). It's currently 11:42 am.

I used to have to charge every night to be on the safe side else I may have run out of battery the following day but now this is much better! :)

AND all the bugs have been fixed. Way to go Apple! :D

I'm not too thrilled with 2.1. Apps crashing and Safari crashing more than ever. Since i've had the phone (july 14), Safari has quit on me more times since Friday (2.1) then since i've had the phone. And i find the more bars to be sort of fake. I had 6 bars of 3G in my apartment (never had much 3G in here before) and still can barely make a phone call on the 3G network from my apartment. :(

ps. also my email isn't being pushed properly. had the phone on all night. woke up and had to open mail to get the mail to come in.

You might want to reinstall your apps, or even do a complete restore, then reinstall them. It would probably be worth it, as 2.1 is rock-solid for me.

- repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
This was listed in the last front page post for 2.1 as an addition. Am I wrong in understanding that it was for Motorola style bleeps for new SMS that hadn't been read yet? I haven't noticed this working since updating..?

In 2.1 Mail.app keeps spamming 'connection to the server failed' popups even though the connection works perfectly. Once it starts it won't stop so you have to kill and restart mail.

That's the only bug I've found so far. OTOH battery life seems identical to me - about 2 days before it dies, as before.

I still get Safari crashes once In a while, but not nearly as much as I used to. I am sooooooo happy they fixed the laggy typing.

My service has improved significantly too. I used to have to ALWAYS turn off 3g because the service was so unpredictable. My apt used to only get one bar of 3g; now it gets 4, sometimes 5.

However one good thing came from a buggy phone: I kept pestering phone support about it, opened a case, and after 4 weeks they decided to compensate me for my troubles: they sent me a brand new nano for free! They even let me choose the color.

Hey.
I am still so much waiting for Bluetooth Sync. Do you think they will add this feature one day? It should be possible via Software Update, I guess.

by the way: How can I change the folder where iTunes put the iPhones Backups? I was hoping this is getting better with 8.0.

Overall 2.1 and the added features have been pretty good for me. I especially like how they have increased the strength of the vibration on the phone, so now I dont miss calls like I used too. They have also made text message notifications more private as it now doesnt display who the message is from!

On the bad side, Safari is crashing just as much as ever. And today I was also in the settings tab and it crashed! First time that has happened.

Problem syncing iTunes purchases with iPhone

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but it looks as though DRM tracks purchased through iTunes are not syncing properly with my iPhone.

The tracks copy over to the iPhone, and from iTunes I can see them sitting in the relevant playlist, but when i go to the iPod section of the iPhone, they can't be found....

Can someone else check to back up this?

Oh and these items, were available within the iPhone section pre 2.1 update...

Loving 2.1

I had been victim to the problem where all of a sudden, all of my 3rd party apps would stop working and the iPod contents would vanish. This happened to me three times requiring a full restore. Due to the fear of this happening again, I was hesitant every time I installed new apps or even sync'd. Now, it appears as if the whole method of installing and verifying apps is fixed. Apps install lickety-split (seconds not minutes) and I'm no longer fearful of installing straight to the iPhone.

My backups of 75+ apps used to take *hours* and now it takes about a minute. That is a *huge* difference. Also, when an updated app is installed its icon position is retained.

Today is my first work day since the update so it will be a good test of the battery life.

how about double click home button when phone is locked, it brings up ipod function. can push play / next / previous and volume.

Count me as one from that user base that doesn't see what the big copy/paste deal is. I find that Apple has done an excellent job of anticipating how I need to move data around and has implemented methods of doing that without the need for copy and paste. In the year+ I've been using the iPhone, I can vaguely remember needing that feature a handful of times.

"Only one feature that was originally promised for a September release has not yet been delivered: "Push" notifications."

A weary user base pleads for help with Copy/Paste. How much longer must we suffer?

3G Data - untruly slow after 2.1 - please help!

Hi all,

Ever since updating my iPhone 3G to v.2.1, the 3G data speeds are unbelievably slow. To give you an example, sitting in my apartment (which had 5 bars 3G both before and after the update), the BBC website took 20 seconds on v.2.0.1, and is now 3 mins 15 seconds on v.2.1.

I phoned Apple support about this, and they recommended I contact AT&T to get my account 'reprovisioned' and have an over-the-air update applied. I'm going to try that this morning.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'd really appreciate any advice you may have!

Cheers, Dan.

I suspect that, if your battery is still reading 100%, you have come across the bug that was reported in earlier versions where the battery meter got stuck on 100% full. Try turning the phone on and off and see what you have showing then

There is enough RAM because your cellphone operations and e-mail are running in the background.

That's not any kind of indication of how the phone will handle a large number of third-party apps running at once (hint: the answer is... not very well).

Oh dear lord you're right :( Turned phone off and on and now reading is at 20%. Better not use my phone much for the rest of the day or I'll run out of battery..:(

I think they should just drop Push notifications and allow background programs. Apple's first blunder was to close the iPhone to programmers. Now they've fixed that, they should avoid making another mistake with this stupid workaround.

The iPhone will slow down if apps can run in the background. I'd rather see Apple make the iPhone run as fast as possible.

If the push notification is done right it could simulate almost everything background running does. For example, without opening the app, a push-notice can put a number on the application icon to mean "6 messages waiting" (or any other type of notice). The app can download those messages once it's opened.

For something like VoIP, however, the push notice would have to be able to do an alarm and/or open your application (depending on the phone's current state).

...but I'm also glad that they fixed annoying bugs like crashes, App icon repositioning

Yes! One of the most annoying UI bugs the iPhone had. It was impossible to keep apps organized the way they randomly scrambled after any updates. Kudos for this one.

I haven't tried stress testing the battery life yet, but I didn't upgrade until Saturday afternoon, so will try all features today. I may just hold off ordering that Mophie Juicepack I had decided was a necessity for the new iPhones. I did notice yesterday that 3G performance wasn't necessarily "better", but that the phone went to EDGE with lots of bars more quickly in locations that I recall being 0-1 bar 3G places. That's an improvement, I suppose.

...OTOH battery life seems identical to me - about 2 days before it dies, as before.

Didn't Apple say that the battery life would be improved "for some users?" I'm curious what scenarios or factors determine who those "some users" would be.

I could use that feature every time somone sends me an MMS picture and I have to try to remember the password and id to that stupid AT&T viewmymessage.com website. Apple, give me MMS, or copy paste, or make viewmymessage.com work properly. Working properly would mean I have a fixed account user name (how about my AT&T account name for the billing website, and let me pick my own password). Also, forget that stupid Flash viewer of pictures on the site and just post the jpegs so that I can download them. How hard could that be?

Is there enough RAM in the iPhone to run background programs etc"

That's an interesting question. Doesn't the iPhone have only one memory type? It's all flash memory that can be mapped for storage or "RAM" type usage. There must be a portion reserved for "RAM", otherwise you could overload with songs and data to the point the phone wouldn't boot, but I'd think that otherwise you could map as much for your needs as OS X (lite) would allow.

How can a recorded message from someone else on someone else's phone be made worse by your own phone?

The 2.1 update has been a great improvement for my 2.5G iPhone. I've noticed the following very obvious improvements:
  • Contacts lag is completely gone and it now loads almost instantly, scrolls perfectly
  • Programs install over WiFi MUCH faster. Previously, they loaded very slowly and my phone almost always reset itself before the application actually installed. After installing 3 new programs, that behavior is gone.
  • Icon apps automatically go back where I had them after an update
  • Keyboard lag is gone

I haven't noticed a change in reception or battery life, but haven't really tested it either. Overall, great update

After only having new 2.1 on for a day, I'm impressed. Everything just seems a lot smoother, no apps have crashed, I can now get 3G signal in work...........

Just a shame the phone didnt behave like this 'out the box'. Thing is though, I also work in telecommunications industry and from my experience, no phone is perfect when it first comes out ;) At least with iphone , Apple regularly release updates.
