OP is talking about Blackberry Storm. I don't think so, Apple has no reason to believe people will ditch the iPhone for the Storm if we do not get the 2.2 update with push feature. There is not going to be any chance of the storm even standing up anywhere near the iPhone.

Umm 2.1 already has push, event 2.0 had it. What are you talking about?
 
The whole reason for push is so you can get notifications sent to the iphone from an app ex: AIM, without the iphone checking at all, push will barely have negative effects on battery life

iPhone "push" destroys your battery. Blackberry is FAR better for this. iPhone constantly pings the server... draining your battery.

No it does not. PUSH saves battery life compared to pulling emails with any phone. My phone only uses 1/4 of the battery from 6am to 10:30pm at night with many calls, and emails with exchange.

It does not constantly ping the server.
 
I generally get a couple of days standby without any trouble and use push email for mobileme....
