iPhone 2G, switching to 3G...will my bill go up?

Has anybody else besides Spacekitty tired this? What was the result?
I have the 2g iPhone, and its getting old, messing up, and I have no warrenty left. I would like to get the new iPhone 3gS without the extra cost. It doesn't make sense for me to pay $10+ for the 3g service becuase I don't live in a 3g covered area.
When I called AT&T about getting the iPhone 3gS and not paying the 10 bucks extra becuase I have NO 3g service here... she laughed and said... so what, you still have to pay extra... but we are doing our best to get 3g coverage everywhere... you should have it in a year!
*** I was on a pre-order for AT&T dsl; she told me 3 months for service in my area... it only took them 2.5 years!
...so anybody else had a crack at what sweet lil ol' Spacekitty's suggestion?

SpaceKitty is taking B.S.!! You don't need another sim card. Just take the one out of the 3G/3GS, stick it in the Original iPhone, connect to iTunes and change the data plan to the Original iPhone one, then put it in the 3G/3GS. Or do what I did, and call using the 3G/3GS, tell them I'm using my Original iPhone, give them the IMEI of the Original iPhone and change the data plan. Boom! No swapping any sims. It saves a lot of time, and my way works too!

Just so you know, MMS will not work with a 2G data plan and a 3GS iPhone.
I called and had my data plan changed back to the $30 one so I could use MMS.
Not sure if the person who replied above me is correct, haven't tried that idea. I know my way works though.

I've got a buddy that works at a cellphone store that carries various companies such as AT&T. According to him, AT&T - and other cell phone service providers - do a "network sweep," that checks to see the data plan the customer has, and the device using the service. If the two do not match up, AT&T will update the customer to the correct plan so as to meet the device.
If that is the case, then wouldn't my plan be changed automatically by them.

Just to chime in here quickly -
We have two 2G iPhones, on the now defunct GoPhone Pick-Your-Plan ($51/month each). I found a good deal on an used 3G, bought it, popped in the SIM from one of the 2G iPhones into it and been using it ever since. So far, knock on wood, no warning messages from ATT.
Remember, the data speed is determined by the phones radio, and not the SIM card. I have full 3G network access using my 2G SIM card.

No they will not change it. I was using my 3GS iPhone in a 2G data plan since the middle of June and never had my plan changed by Apple. I changed it myself to the 3G data plan once MMS became available since MMS wasn't possible under a 2G data plan.

Ah, so it all just works out...
Oh. Wait a minute. If no one has ever been charged for using a 3G phone on a 2G plan, why are these precise instructions needed? Why do I have to keep my 2G phone and follow these steps? You just said no on has been charged but then you make it sound like all these steps are necessary.
Which is it?

How are you going to get back onto a 2G data plan without a 2G iPhone??? Upgrading to a 3GS will put you on a 3G data plan. The 2G is needed to get back onto a 2G data plan. Get it?
