I am pretty sure it's up to the tele-company.
I have a factory unlock iphone. I used to have 3.0 firmware and it doesn't show the tethering option. Then i updated to 3.1 and itunes asked if i want to update the carrier too. I clicked yes and now i have tethering option.

I have a iPhone 3gs which I've never upgraded from the beginning state. I got it from O2. Every time I plug it into my mac iTunes says I need to upgrade to 3.1.3. I always click no then it comes up again with my carrier settings have changed upgrade, witch I cancel as well. But reading that tethering was blocked by O2 not Apple could I upgrade to 3.1.3 but cancel the carrier upgrade and i can still use internet tethering?

So do you have native tethering with 3.0 firmware? If so then MAYBE it will work if you update to 3.1.3 without updating the carrier setting. Why risk it if it's working for you now.

3.13 and I have tethering on att

my wife has 3.13 on her 3gs phone, I had installed the peacefulinsanity.com hack but it had not worked, did the same for my daughter on her 3g phone, did not work either, but I left it on their phone, did the same on mine. Well today I was playing with the wifes phone and I notice she has tethering, checked my kids phone, same thing tethering enabled. My phone, no dice. They both have 3.13, wifes model is mb715ll and she is on modem firmware 5.12.01. Now why can she get tethering and I can't.

Cool! To confirm:
your wife/daughter has:
- 3gs iPhone
- 3.1.3
- locked, unjailbroken
- tethering options
- tethering actually works?

Working tether

Hi,

I have a 3GS with 3.1.2 and I've managed to get tethering to work on O2-UK.

I jailbroke with Pwnage Tool (it's been officially unlocked by O2, never did an unofficial unlock on it), and downloaded the O2 signature from benm. Originally this made a button "set up tethering" appear, but when clicked it said "O2 hasn't enabled tethering on this account". Then a few weeks later I was reading another tethering hack page and it now works...I can't remember what/where that page was...but I think the key was a full network settings reset after performing the benm download.

Good luck everybody, hope you all get it working - I'm more worried now about getting it working in 2 months time on iPhone 4!!

fyi for all those peeps who were unfortunate enough to upgrade to 3.1.3 and can't tether, you can now use spirit to jailbreak *worked flawlessly for me* and if you download mywi and get the trial installed and working you can actually click the fix tethering option in mywi and you will have your tethering option back. I am actually posting this right now from my macbook using the tethering option on my iphone with 3.1.3 YAY

Edit: Bluetooth Tethering works like a charm with my Macbook so seems like its doing well too

If you uninstall the trial of MyWi does the tethering option remain?

where did you download mywi from? i've tried a few times in the cydia store but each time I get "location not found" or "host unreachable".

Install asBattery (enables battery % meter on 3G) (OPTIONAL!)

Step 1: Launch Cydia (it may go through an update process, and may even restart the iPhone springboard - if so, just restart Cydia when done). You can use Rock for this instead, FYI.

Step 2: Tap on "Manage" tab at the bottom.

Step 3: Then tap on "Sources".

Step 4: Tap on the "Edit" button on the top right corner.

Step 5: Tap on the "Add" button on the top left corner.

Step 6: Tapping on add will open a pop-up where you need to enter the URL of the repository. Please enter the following exactly:

http://apt.iphone-storage.de

Step 7: Now tap on the "Add Source" button. Please wait for the repository to be installed. Once completed, return to Cydia, and hit "Done" at the top right corner.

Step 8: Now tap on the Search tab at the bottom right corner of Cydia and search for "asBattery" (type it in to search exactly for it).

Step 9: Click on and open the program.

Step 10: Then tap the "Install" button at the top right, then click on "Confirm" on the next screen. This will install asBattery on your jailbroken iPhone.

Step 11: After asBattery is successfully installed, reboot your iPhone (hold the power button on the top of the phone and fully power the phone off, then turn the phone back on).

Step 12: You should now be able to enable the battery percentage indicator via the Settings App (General->Usage->Battery Percentage) just like iPhone 3GS users. Note: If for some reason your phone locks/freezes up during/after this, hold down the "Home" button and the "Power" button at the same time and wait for the phone to reboot. This will rectify it.

thanks for the helpful info.

Spirit

Spirit is without a doubt the easiest most foolproof way to JB. From there I went to cydia then rock yer phone and got mywi. Works..using it right now, but I can literally see the battery run down with my naked eye! Gets kinda warm too. Oh well, kit was more of an experiment than anything, but it does work. Spirit is really incredible. Took like 2 minutes.....tops.

Tether option

So I currently have 3.1.3 jailbroken via snowbreeze and on ATT and my question is if the option under settings>network>general>internet tethering is there where I can turn on/off the tethering, will ATT charge me for using it? It states 'additional charges may apply'. Does a regular non-jailbroken 3.1.3 iphone have that option? I know that I did install MyWi and then uninstalled it, and am not sure if that opened up the option for internet tethering under netowrk. Sorry for all the questions, I don't want to use it and rack up a hefty bill. THANKS!

I got my iphone tethering in LA on at&t using 3.1.3 , on a jailbroken iphone with cydia and pdanet app

just jailbreak with any of those jailbreak apps,

then once cydia is installed run that

search for pdanet

install that

run pda net, setup a "ad hoc wireless network" join that network with pdanet app running and your computer will use the iphones internet

that is what i'm using to tether

i don't know how at&t will tell the difference between data going to my laptop and my iphone

i am just doing normal surfing that i would do anyway on my iphone , but i'm doing it on my laptop.

I wouldn't risk downloading programs etc, I would just keep it to surfing

BUT I don't know if at&t will just start charging those who they deem are tethering w/o paying

i knwo in the past i used my iphone a lot like a computer , just like a computer with a real small screen i updated to a laptop but just using the iphone's internet via tethering
