The iphone 4 was the FIRST phone named because of generation. It was the 4th phone so they called iphone 4. They didnt have the iphone 1 2 or 3, so why people think the next phone must be called the iphone 6 is unknown to me? ONE time out of FIVE did they name a phone based on generation. The next phone could be called still called the 5. The 5 doesnt need to represent the generation but just the next one in general. If it's LTE then it will prob just be called the iphone LTE. It's consumers that come up with this generation standard.

We know that the "3" in "3G/3GS" doesn't refer to the generation of iPhone, but now that it's gone 3G/3GS/4/4S, the number in front has come to mean something different from what it originally stood for -- this happens sometimes in human communication. From now on I think people will expect a system where you get an incremented number for an external redesign and an "S" for new internals with the same external design. However, anything could happen next time as it's not exactly a compelling sample size. I don't think there'll be an iPhone 6 if there's not an iPhone 5, but it's possible.

You could argue that the iPhone 4S is already the 6th iPhone -- the 5th iPhone was the CDMA iPhone 4, which is just as different internally from the iPhone 4 as the 3G was from the original iPhone. Internally the iPhone 4 is the iPhone3,1 (GSM) and iPhone3,3 (CDMA). Presumably the iPhone 4S will be iPhone4,1 and the next generation will be iPhone5,1 -- voila! As good a reason as any to call it the iPhone 5.

How so? I don't see that anywhere in my logic. I said the 4th iPhone was the iPhone 4, hence the 6th iPhone can't be the iPhone 5. Also, what is the iPhone 3? There is no such phone.

The iPhone 4 is the only one that just had a number in front of the name and it was referring to the generation of the phone. The rest of them did not.

I don't see how people can't understand this. There is zero sense in calling the next one iPhone 5.

I agree with you, I see no sense in Apple calling the next phone the 5. The 4S is in a weird spot though since now Apple has to choose between calling it the 5 just to make it look nicer by going in order, or going to 6 which would actually be correct.

See, this is what I've been telling people! Whenever I mentioned anything about the upcoming (now past) iPhone release, most people were certain with all their hearts that it will be an iPhone 5. I just couldn't see the logic with that!
Oh also, I had this one guy who thought that the next iPhone will include a built in projector. All you have to do is hold the iPhone against the wall and you can see video's playing from the projector! He believed this with all his heart, poor thing.

it will be an iPhone 5.

This is just an example, but take Grand Theft Auto games as an example.

GTA III --> GTA Vice City --> GTA San Andreas --> GTA IV

so the 6th GTA game was called GTA IV because GTA san andreas and vice city were part of the III series.

it's the same with iPhones, the 4S is part of the 4 series, the next one will be iPhone 5.

Well, I dunno if I'd compare GTA to the iPhones, but I see your logic. And I have no to little very doubt that the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5, I'm almost certain it will be. It was just this release where I knew it wouldn't be.

you're wrong. because if that's the way you're thinking, it would mean the the iPhone 4 should be called iPhone 3, because its the "third" design. the 3GS was part of the 3G series. Am I right? or am I right?

so, please, everyone, try to understand that there's no logical explanation to name the next iPhone, "iPhone 5". It's just not logical.

It'll be either iPhone 6 (referring to its generation, like they did with the iPhone 4)
Or it'll be named after a big feature that it has, like iPhone LTE (like they did with the iPhone 3G)

got it?

How disappointing. This is like seeing how a magic trick works.

At first the nation was in shock when The Amazing SckCbc predicted the name of the iPhone 4S TEN Whole Months ago. But now we see the secret of his prognosticating is that he simply throws every name at the wall because if one sticks then he can claim "I knew it long before any of you mere mortals".

That's probably why people thought it might be a 5...Apple broke their release date pattern. It's not that unreasonable.

Also, it's not obvious they will continue on with 5 and 5S, for the very same reason. Things change.

i would rather be on the #S cycle anyway, its a refined version of the previous model.
Let the new model come out, have a million people use it... realize how it could have been a little better, make those improvements along with giving it a newer processor/camera.

Yes. Because Apple is completely incapable of creating a new design without it being severely flawed...

The 4S is a solid upgrade but if a successor with a different case design came out then you would have loved it just as much if not more.

well im not accusing apple of making anything severely flawed, im just saying in the 3g, 3gs, 4, 4s, (5?, 5s?) pattern, i see the apeal of being on the 'off' cycle. Obviously if a 5 came it id think it was the balls, i mean... im a member of a forum called 'macrumors' for crying out loud.

I don't understand how people think the next iPhone will still be 5. The 4S is the 5th iPhone. If ever a time to call an iPhone the iPhone 5 it would have been this year with iOS 5, 5th generation. The iPhone 4 was the iPhone 4 because the Original iPhone was the iPhone 1. The 3G was the iPhone 2. The 3GS was the iPhone 3. It doesnt matter what the name is they are going by GENERATION if the next iPhone is called iPhone Awesome. The one after it will be iPhone 7 whether its actual name or reference DOESNT MATTER.

and btw I think eventually they will stop the naming pattern all together. You dont see the ipods as Ipod 4. or MacBook Pros as MacBook Pro 6.

...how about iPhone 4G?

Or they will call it iPhone LTE.

I don't think they'll skip "iPhone 5" either since iPhone 4S is THE 5th iPhone! I'm honestly MOST looking forward to seeing Apple's announcement and name for the next version of the iPhone.

I vote iPhone 2012 or even iPhone 2013 for the next iPhone.....of maybe just iPhone 5. :D

Whoever said the numbering would go 3, 4, 6, 8 must have dropped out of school in the second grade.
