Where in China? I've been here since Thanksgiving 2007, been fun. It's very different then I thought it was going to be (for the better). Been to Shenzhen a few times among a few other cities.

I'll be in Yanji, Yanbian Prefecture, Jilin Province. Going to work at an orphanage there. This is my second trip. Went back in '05 the first time. I really enjoyed it and I'm debating moving to China myself at some point.

I thought this was a cute story, with an adorable young lady with a beautiful smile. It's kind of funny that everyone has overlooked the one single message clearly being sent to us by "Iphone Girl" and that is clearly visible in her pictures. "Iphone Girl" has two fingers sticking up making the sign of "PEACE".

This picture brings me back to my childhood days when my dad used to tell us to make the peace sign when he would take our pictures. Then when I had children, their grandpa would continue the tradition of telling the children to make the peace sign with every picture. My dad was very young when World War II occured in his country. He used to say that the one common hand gesture they had to communicate with the Soldiers was the PEACE sign. So this simple sign language has spanned generations in my family and continues to be used by teenagers here in California (albeit slightly slanted to the left =).

I think it's pretty cool that the message of peace is being sent out by Iphone Girl. :)

The peace sign seems to be universal among us all. Pretty cool!

From my studies, the "V"-symbol carries different meanings. It originally meant Victory. Then quickly became a symbol for peace, in that the victory or end of war yielded peace. (Though not all) but to many non-english speaking around the world, flashing the "V"-symbol to a camera or to an english-speaking person simply means (roughly) a cool or friendly way to say "Hello!", with the original victory/peace connotation not comprehended nor infered.

on the issue of the "i-phone girl"...

- Thank you to Apple for crafting such a wonderful product as the i-phone, as well as all of your other wonderful products. They are the gold-standard for all the other usa-electronic industries.

- Thank you to China (as well as Japan) for building such high-quality electronics that are enjoyed by everyone around the world.

- and finally, a big THANK YOU to the "i-phone girl". You are the gold-standard for all workers world-wide, to take such pride and joy in your job. Your smilling and friendly attitude speaks well for your family, your company, and your country.

... and a closing, "thank you" to our British-friend who posting his rare find... much like stumbling upon a diamond among debri. You were kind enough to share with us the story of your wonderful experience. And just like a "stadium wave" at a usa-football-game, this story has reverberated around the world over and over, and will continue to bring a smile on faces as new people discover and share this story! :)

- peace out y'all...

as a pure chinese born and grow up in china, I can very responsibly tell that from what she looks she is over 21 years old, so just please don't judge things too quickly and make comments without using right knowledge

So why is this girl smiling?

The truth is she has little to smile about...

She's a worker in a typical Chinese factory. This means she works 50 to 60 hours a week - at least. Maybe gets 2 days off a month. Treated like garbage, no job security, poor working conditions.

And all for a whopping $120 a month...

At least she works for Foxconn, which means she'll only get cheated of her wages a little, and unlike most other factories in China she won't get raped or abused...

She why is she smiling...

Because her life is fulfilled by fulfilling Steve's vision.

That and she doesn't have to reply to this thread.

I agree with you... your message is quite meaningful... peace to everybody! The iphone girl was at peace (when the photos were taken) and gave us her ever sweet, charming smile. I wonder if she's at peace at this particular point of time... It makes me wonder more if she can still give up that wonderful smile more often than usual... Wish her all the luck!!! :)

Troll much? I guess not.

Why would anyone smile? Could it simply because they are happy? Unless you are being forced to smile every time someone takes a photo of you, if that's the case then i feel sorry for you.

Please leave with your typical media fed "China Facts" and come back with more evidences backing your claims.

Such is the drawback of an Internet message board that we have to suffer such grossly ignorant postings...

Whoever thinks this girl is a child has probably never been to an Asian country. You can't compare Asian women to Western women! They have softer features and often look younger than their western counterparts. It's also a cultural matter, in Asia a woman is considered attractive if she looks young, cute, child-like. Here we go more for the stunning, femme-fatale, womanly type (not saying that either is better than the other).
Still, I would never think of her as a child, she looks like she's at least 19.

about iPhone girl

I am work in same area in China, got news about iPhone girl. She was fired by Foxconn, where she worked. As i know it's serious problem, she was playing in work time. don't know if she can find new job in such factory. good luck to her!

I don't think Foxconn was that stupid.

Even she was fired, she will find another well-paid job in no time.

I'm from Guangzhou, nearby Shezhen.
Maybe because of her less education, she didn't take this opportunity to make money.

Yeah, definitely, I guess she is 18 to 20.

I wonder if she is even aware of this?

Yes, according to the local paper, she knew she already became a celebrity, but she just kept away from the media.

Nobody ever told her that she could become a millionaire over a night?
