I have State Farm. I called and they set it up over the phone. Then I brought my phone and reciept into the office and they photocopied the reciept and paid $2.50 for first month and after it is added to my renters and auto insurance each month. I was covered starting the second they took my money.

But what was the deductible? Insurance that only covers a small fraction of the replacement price isn't a lot of help for most people. If it covers less than $60, a typical person is far better off keeping the 2 years worth of premiums in an interest bearing account.

Went to AT&T tonight. Got a new one for $499. I'm a little confused though about how I was eligible for "upgrade status"/pricing? I got the phone for $499 and now I'm with AT&T for 2 years from today, but I wasn't an existing customer with AT&T until I got my original iPhone 3G on launch day. I thought you could only get it as a new customer w/ 2 year contract agreement and subsidized price?

You weren't eligible for an upgrade. There are three prices for iPhones:

1. Price with 2-year contract/renewal if eligible for an upgrade:
$199 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB

2. Price with 2-year contract/renewal if not eligible for an upgrade:
$399 for 8GB, $499 for 16GB

3. No-commitment pricing (no contract, no upgrade):
$599 for 8GB, $699 for 16GB.

^ No the cheapest way is getting a refurb through an upgrade.

He wasn't eligible for an upgrade. Had he been, that would have been the cheapest way.

Thanks for the info!

He was, because he walked out of the AT&T store with the early upgrade price, which means he could've gotten a refurb for $199/$299

My iPhone 3G appears to have vanished. I've taken necessary steps such as flagging the IMEI at AT&T/Apple stores, police reports, reward ads, etc. I've checked my call history on AT&T's website which provided no clues. I have three options:

1. Cancel AT&T contract, pay $150 ETF + $70 for this month's bill, sign up for new AT&T contract, buy new iPhone (black, 16 GB) + SIM card, pay activation fee + pro-rated bill period, etc.
Estimated cost: $575-600

2. Buy new iPhone on eBay + SIM card within days. Activate at AT&T and continue on current contract.
Estimated cost: $575-600.

3. Pay $500 deductible on homeowner's insurance. Wait for claim to be approved from insurance company. Wait for check. Wait for new iPhone.
Estimated cost: Time + $500.

I really don't want to use option 3 as I need a new phone ASAP. I know that you can only purchase an iPhone from AT&T/Apple (US) with a 2 year contract agreement. Am I allowed to bring them my own iPhone (from eBay) and have it activated and purchase a new SIM card since mine was stolen? Or do I have to take option 1?

I'd say a form of #3. Call your credit card company you purchased the iPhone with. They usually insure items you have purchased. Good Luck, it's worth the try, I've heard success stories.
