anyone have a picture of what the yellowish tint looks like? I get mine tomorrow and was just curious as to what to expect. Thanks in advance

I don't understand why so many people are flying off the rails about this (apart from the fact that it's the internet, and logic has no place here)

I have both models of iphone and tried the side-by-side comparison. my opinion.... I prefer the 3G, the colours are more vibrant and the picture is sharper. I can see the difference, but i wouldn't call it 'yellowing', it's just a more colourful tone in my eyes.

Can't believe this is being made into an issue when i think it's an improvement

Did you manually download the new firmware or did iTunes get it for you?

Trying to figure out if manual download is needed prior to doing the restore.

This is an important question that should not be understated since the firmware that was available for download the day before the 2.0 release and STILL available for download here and at MacWorld within different threads is the WRONG FIRMWARE for 2.5G iPhones and I still don't think a lot of people know they have the wrong firmware on their phones. MacWorld did not even pull their story or update and alert their readers of this!

I noticed more sluggishness w/ the leaked iPhone firmware than with the correct firmware that was released a day later (I won't even go into the mess of trying to install that correct firmware!).

So, for those wondering...

2.5G iPhone = 1,1 5A347
3 G iPhone = 1,2 5A347

Yes, they ARE DIFFERENT, despite what MacWorld.com editors say!
If you updated to the wrong firmware, it could be the source of all kinds of problems including some of the sluggishness complaints some 2.5G iPhone users are complaining about. I have no idea what would happen if you attempted to put the 1,1 firmware on a 3G iPhone, but I be it wouldn't be pretty!

Waitaminute...

If this were an intentional SOFTWARE adjustment, wouldnt the OLD iphones gain a yellow tint upon upgrade? Especially if as some posters say they use the same screen (I dont think so...).

Methinks this is just marketing BS inresponse to an unforseen problem. I hate it when companies aren't just straightforward with you.:apple::mad::apple::(

NOPE, WRONG.

The 3G and 2.5G iPhones have DIFFERENT firmware, read my post above.

You are CORRECT, but if Apple wanted to make it a warmer screen, but they decided all the old iphones could just get along fine with the colder screen, just cuz? Doesnt pass the whiff test there

The new displays could be natively "warmer", but that still doesn't mean Apple couldn't offer an adjustment just like with any other LCD if they wanted to. I'm sure if, like everything else, enough people clamor for it, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple adds this feature. Apple certainly didn't intend to offer $100 gift certificates to Day 1 iPhone 1.0 buyers, but they did after the uproar, right?

I also think there would have been a huge uproar if the "warmer" tint were applied to the original iPhones for the simple fact that people intrinsically don't like drastic change that they weren't already asking for! It would be like fixing something that isn't broken. Most original iPhone users are happy with their displays and its "whiteness" probably mainly just because they are USED to IT! :)

just update the new firmware...don't really noticed too much of a difference..hope it fixes what it's suppose to fix...do 1st generation iphones have to go to this firmware too?

Apple let's us adjust brightness, they should also have an option for adjusting white balance.

You mean "Apple lets us...." [What is it, these days, with people using unnecessary apostrophes, everywhere?]

I agree: Apple needs to give us a white-balance control.

Applying the update doesn't change anything noticeably. Perhaps, compared to a stock 3G unit, there's a slight difference. But post-update, my display still has a distinct yellow tint, and I hate it. Oh, well....

They won't change them. Its intentional to use cheap screens in the iphone now. Cheap means bad quality. B Grade, inconsistent inferior screens,
in such high volumes that the overall saving for them, adds up to a very nice profit indeed!

Welcome back Xploit. :(

I've got rid of the yellow tint!!!

HOW TO GET RID OF THE YELLOW SCREEN TINT ON THE IPHONE 3G

I'm sooooo pleased I've managed to get rid of the yellow tint!!!

As soon as i got my iPhone 3G i was gutted with the yellow tint but tried to convince myself that it wasn't that bad or that id get used to it or it was 'meant' to be that way etc...

They way i did it was simple.

Drained the battery right down to nothing then gave it a full nights charge - when i got up this morning i'd forgotten what id done and as soon as i picked up my iphone the difference was astounding! no yellow tint at all.

To drain the battery i used the phone normally all day then left it playing a video through iplayer until it stopped due to 'low battery' then i played a video on the ipod feature until the phone turned itself off - then i left it for about another hour turning the phone 'on' to see the flashing red battery indicator about every 5 / 10 mins just to make sure every last drop of power was out of it.

Then i plugged it into the mains charger - at first it wouldnt come back on i just got the red battery on screen and then eventually it reboots. I didnt look at this point if the colour had corrected itself but i left it to charge for about 9 hours and when i checked it in the morning it looked great.

This has also seemed to solve the 'lag' problem when writing text messages.

Anyone got any idea why this has worked???

I haven't 'updated' or changed my firmware or software.

I have two 2G iphones with me today and noticed one was yellower and one was bluer, in terms of color temperature.

then i realized one has the "pre-release" thursday software, and the other was updated the normal way.

seems pretty cut and dry to me. color temperature was adjusted.

r.i.p. yellow 'tint'

well just out of curiosity i updated the firmware that allegedly fixes the yellowing, and it did 'fix' it, my screen now looks unnatural and blue, apple really got it right with the warmer temperature, and im disappointed that its gone, the screen looked extremely crisp and vibrant, now it just looks like every other uninformed un-calibrated blue tinted display. apple really got it right with that, i hope it comes back, people complaining about this really blows my mind, i calibrate screens for a living, the color depth was vastly superior warmer.

I compared my brothers 3G screen next to my classic, and his screen is WAY better and more vibrant than mine.

As someone posted earlier, his screen didn't look yellow, it was my screen that looked blue.

I can confirm this worked for me, no idea how... before I did this there was this sort of slight yellow tint over everything... was driving me crazy. Now at least the whites are white (the colors are still warmer than the first gen iphone which is cool) ... my guess is that the new firmware in part was meant to fix this ( mine already came with the new one but was still a bit yellow) but some didn't 'take' ? this might just finish the process or something... who knows?!!

Sounds a bit wierd that draining the battery would make it all stop looking yellow, but glad that it worked for you.

Thanks! Believe me I know how it sounds... I was as skeptical as anyone and tried it because everything else I tried did not work... even compared it to a coworker's 3g that had excellent white level, and now they're practically the same whereas yesterday there was a definite difference... weird!

I see nothing cheap about the newest screens. Do you have some quotable intel or a link?

There is no evidence that Apple is using cheap screens in the iPhone. Infact there is no evidence that the screen has changed from the original iPhone at all.

Cheap? A Capacitive Touch screen made of high grade electro-responsive glass? This is perhaps the highest quality screen of any handheld device available on the market today, and likely to be so for the next several years. The Resistive Touch screens found in other smart phones and devices do not even compare in terms of quality, response, and fluidity. The Capacitive Touch screen used in the 3G iPhone happens to be the same one which was used in the first generation iPhone, with the exception that it is now secured by mini-bolts instead of glue - nothing 'cheap' about it, or them.

While this topic is on the whole screen issue. Is it possible for a firmware update or whatever to fix the negative black issue on the iphone 3g? Or am i pretty much stuck with the crappy negative black screen issue? Also, if im stuck with it, is that a returnable issue if i bring it back to apple store?
