just doing a restore from a 1st gen iphone and that is taking over an hour as you can imaging I'm gagging to have a play.

Demon, what software build is it? I know it's 2.0 but what's the number after in Settings> About? Does itunes update the firmware on first sync?

My iPhone 16gb (black) has firmware 2.0 (5A345) and no, iTunes does not update it when it is connected for the first time.

Answers to other questions asked (and not asked):

Capacity for the 16gb when formatted leaves 14.6gb of free space.

When I purchased mine at the Telia store in Stockholm, Sweden last night, they did not open up the box. We were told to take it home and use iTunes to activate it. I stood in line from 7:45pm until 2:30am and Telia did a fantastic job of feeding us potato chips, juice, hotdogs, candy, coffee and tea, gave use chapstick and free t-shirts which have "I got one" on the front (in Swedish) with the Telia logo on one sleeve and Apple iPhone on the other sleeve. The lineup was huge and I would estimate it to have been about 4-500 people strong. One guy in the line brought a chello with him and played most of the night for anyone that wanted to listen.

I opted to go with a gsm plan for my iPhone and added an unlimited data plan to it. That way I won't have to worry about dropped calls over 3G like I have read has occurred and my battery life will be much longer. I don't need the faster 3g speeds for phone calls or sms messages and Telia gives free access to all of their wifi hotspots in the entire country for free when you buy and iPhone.

No negative black issue on mine either.

Speaker is louder, noticeably louder than the 1st gen iPhone.

@mmaguire - no dock is included (can be purchased separately but Telia did not have any in stock when I got my iPhone). You do get the usb cable which is used to charge your iPhone via computer or wall outlet and also used to sync your music, data, etc...to your phone. The old iPhone dock will not work with the new iPhone.

I'll be online for the rest of the day if anyone has any specific questions they would like answered.

Hmmm... quite disappointed with my one so far. The screen is definitely dimmer and yellower than my original iPhone and the whole thing feels cheaper than the original. The black borders around the screen are much bigger and give it a cheap look and I can clearly see the 'hidden' three sensors next to the loudspeaker.

Not impressed.

Edit: Blurry iSight picture included to show what I mean. The bright one on the right is my 2G iPhone. The yellowy one on the left is the 3G iPhone.

WiFi on planes will be accomplished, I imagine, just as it is on busses, trains, and ferries: the transport has a connection of some sort (satellite, typically) which is shares via a wireless router. Presumably airlines do this because of they can strictly control the frequency, bandwidth, etc of the wireless signal being passed through the plane.

I work for a major airline and deal with this. Expect wifi on many domestic flights (US) starting late this year into next. Anyway... Glad you're enjoying your new phones!

Oh no! The new iPhone has *exactly* the seem screen issues as my macbook pro! Horrid yellow tint. Mind, the contrast is much better than my 2g phone. If you tunr the brightness up on the 3g, then the yellow tint goes, but aything short of 50%, and it yellow yellow.

On the phone to Apple Support now because of the yellow screen issue. :( This sucks. Big time.

Let us know how you get on mate, as to whether they will exchange or not based on this. They may well say it's going to be fixed with a FW update. I fixed my own MBP by installing a colour profile done by someone with a spyder.

Well I've been unable to get one alas. After the o2 online failure earlier in the week, I thought I'd try my luck rocking up to the Fenchurch Street o2 store this morning a bit before 8. A couple of hundred people out the front convinced me to walk straight on to work. A couple of hours later I visited the same o2 store again (still 30 people out front, only 8gb models left), then Canon Street CPW (nothing left, only had 2 16gb to start with!), and the o2 store opposite - only 8gb models again.

Looks like I'll not get a iPhone 3G for a while. Seriously considering just waiting for a 32Gb version now. Alas.

Well done to those of you who've managed to get one. Sounds wonderful.

I went to my local o2 store, to try out the demo units and they all had this horrible yellow tinge to the screen. Side by side my v1 screen blew it out the water so I walked out. No way I'm getting one with an issue like that. They had 8 demo stations and they were all the same.

got it!! Syncing now, was number 5 in line, got there at 6:45am. played with a demo for a few, loved it. Feels much much better in hand, yes finger prints suck, but who cares, much much faster data. Overall better feel - will see how the battery life is and sounds etc after the sync is done.

Got to my ATT store about 7:45, line was about 100+ deep. Ended up buying the 9th spot in line for $20.

Nice!

Got a black 8gb. Love it but not sure if GPS is working here in Hull in the UK? When i try the map application it just searches when i try to locate my current location - The one time it did work it said i was in london.

I just text my friend who lined up with me this morning and his told him he was in london too? very odd.

Someone earlier mentioned turning GPS off? how would you turn it on or off. I don't think there's an option for that?

Ok, forget everything I just said - I just tried it and it's perfect now. Fast and pinpoint accurate. Just ran outside the office and around the building to watch the blue dot move. My colleagues think i'm insane - but I'm happy

A couple of questions

Can it be used to provide internet access via bluetooth to a device such as a TomTomGo GPS or computer?

Can it play wav files that arrive as an email attachment such as those from asterisk?

These were deal breakers for me with the first iPhone, had to return it.

The new phone really does feel great in your hand now that it's curved; it's also a lot less slippery to hold compared to the aluminum, which I didn't expect. Very nice! No yellow screen or anything on mine; it's just as bright and crisp as my old 8GB.

Well I absolutely Love my 16 gig Black, its one of the best things I have ever brought, I love it bits already.

No to the first.

No idea about the second.. there is some support for attachments now but I'm not sure if it extends to music.
