How is Apple giving a lack of info to the carriers? Here's the iphone 3g, comes in black and white, 8gb and 16gb versions, and white only on 16gb version, does 3g and all sorts...

Apple do not interferer with the carrier's data plans and contracts, since there's no revenue sharing this time. All Apple do is sell the iphone to the carriers with a discounted bulk buying price and the carriers charge whatever they saw fit.

Yes, but Apple do control stock levels and when the physical stock will be available, not to mention when they announced it and let the carriers in on the whole thing.

To an extent, because O2 is actually buying the initial order of handsets from Apple, it has to ultimately decide how many and of what ratio of 8:16GB goes to each shop, bearing in mind what Apple will sell O2 in a given order.

True, but I dont think the "lack of white iphone at launch" rumour holds any water. Its not like they have a problem with white dye or something, on the other hand if they said there's no 16gb verisons what so ever then there could have a chip supply problem, but its not.

in each O2 store now there's a blue box. On one side it says "Pay and go later this year" on the top it says "3G iPhone 11th July" and the small print written in the corner says

"8gb iPhone only, subject to a £45 per month 18 month contract"

From this it's easy to see why lots of stores think the 16gb won't be available... O2 screwed up and copied and pasted the small print from the "free on some contracts" poster to the "available 11th July" poster

He'll, if I didn't have prior knowledge I'd have come away from that thinking the iPhone cost 45 per month and was 8gb only!

LOL, now that would be ironic that the numerous threads and copious posts from us all being nervous/concerned could be because of a copy n paste oversight.

Well spotted ;)

From talking to friends at the company, I've heard that...

1. Whether or not the white version will be available and in what quantities.
...White will be available.

2. Whether or not the 16GB version will be available and in what quantities.
...16 GB wont be available, or in very short supply (larger stores only)

3. Any real detail about the PAYG options, both in terms of price, terms and release date. Fair enough (well, almost: I am definitely pissed about this) not having it available at launch, but just saying "later this year" without giving dates at this point is ridiculous.

...Not around at launch, and you will probably tempted by well stocked contract phones in the mean time.

Suppose only Friday will tell

It has just been said above but this doesn't make sense! White is available but 16gb isn't. Seeing as white is only going be available as 16gb I'm not sure how this will work!

We have to all come to the conclusion that until Friday arrives we will probably be none the wiser. I believe that both 8gb and 16gb will be available, but only a belief - nothing more.

Can I make a suggestion? How about seeing if the mods can allow us a thread, or some way of easily showing to other macrumors users, which stores are out of iPhones, on the Friday?

You are aware that the White one only comes in 16GB, right?

No, and I assume my friend doesn't either. lol!!! Sorry, I was just saying what I've been told. Though I suppose I could be getting the phone rep bs

Bring on friday instead!

Edit: Been in today, I got it confused. No White, 8 & 16 gig blacks..... 20'ish handsets for sale. Ouch!
