people arguing that pre is slower rendering web pages may not have in mind, that in pre, if you want to reply a message from twitter or messenger is priceless (do not envolve extra steps or waits), whereas in iphone you have (and this assorting that iphone will have a good push notification - ie: without delays on live messaging). so in iphone if you receive a push notification from a live messaging app, and you want to reply - you must wait for:
closing safari
open the messaging app
wait for context
reply
close the messaging app
reopen safari
wait for context
get back to navigation

so, pre may take additional 10 seconds to render a page, but wait, pre is also working giving you a desktop class experience on communication; not working only to render webpages.

ok pre wins

who cares? i still don't want one.

and don't forget to add to your list of pre features the ability to slice cheese with the lovely razor sharp edges :)

p.s. please don't bother arguing, i posted this as a joke and i think the iphone vs pre thing is pointless. if you want a pre, get one. if you want an iphone, get one. simple. my girlfriend wants a pre when it comes out in the uk, i have a 3gs. it's not worth breaking up over, i look forward to using her pre when it turns up (with protective gloves on ;)).

Very true.

I think sometimes we can get real caught up in tests like these. The Pre is faster, no the iPhone 3G S is faster- I think both devices are incredibly fast and do a ridiculous amount of work and run services that make my life easier.

Yeah, an OS thats 2 years old and 2 revisions later beating out a brand new ver 1 OS. Yup, iPhone still stop dog!

Exactly... why should we say otherwise? Just to give the Pre a leg up? Facts are facts, no matter how old the OS is.

Besides. The 3GS's specs are better. No software update is going to fix that for the Pre.

Oh really? Because the Sprint website indicates that a "Simply Everything" plan is required for a Pre, which when you compare to iPhone plans, they come out at about the same price. Actually, with my FAN discount, I'm paying less than I would on Sprint for the Pre. Certainly a far cry from $70 more per month.

Anyway, best of luck with your Pre.

Not true, "Everything Data" is required. It doesn't come out the same price,
for 99 bucks on Sprint you get unlimited mins, text, data, etc...
On At&t it's $150 for their OVERPRICED unlimited plan.

If you wanna argue about pricing. With my 2 lines "Everything Data" family plan I'm paying $97.50 before taxes with my 25% credit union discount which any Sprint customer can easily get. That's with 1500 shared mins, navigation, unlimited text, unlimited data, n/w at 7pm, m2m etc...

Sprint cheapest plan for the Pre is 70 bucks for 450 mins and everything else is unlimited.

Yawn.

I picked up a Pre to play with a bit, the hype motivated me to walk into a Sprint store and try the phone out.

I'm sorry but the hardware is a joke, the software was pretty cool, but I still prefered the Iphone. The size limit was also a joke, 8GB?

Even if my 32GB 3GS was slower than a Pre, I would still choose an Iphone. These phone benchmarks are silly, I don't think people will choose which phone is the fastest.

WebOS has potential, the Pre, as a hardware device, is not even close to an Iphone. Even a slower Iphone.

My opinion.

Yep and while the 3G S can do these things a fraction of a second, your Palm Pee is busy wasting your battery. Tweet, surf, message all day long, I'll have lots of battery life left. The Palm Pee, will be out of "juice" in a couple of hours. :p

Really.. How do you know about the battery life? Do you own a Pre?

Uh no, the minimum plan required for the Pre is the Everything Data which is $70 a month for 450 min, nights starting at 7pm, unlimited SMS and MMS and data. Simply Everything plan is unlimited minutes plus unlimited everything else for $99. Please get your facts straight.

Reason:

WebOS uses JavaScript
iPhone OS uses Objective-C

Objective-C is faster then JavaScript

palm pre:
600Mhz arm cortex a8 + powervr sgx
256mb ram
3mpx cam+flash

iphone 3gs:
833 MHz underclocked to 600 MHz
ARM Cortex-A8
PowerVR sgx
3mpx cam

is unlikely that apple do a software update to allow you to multitask on iphone, due to the memory footprint of iphone OS apps and the millions that are in appstore. also remember that iphone gen 1 showd up with no app store :)

Fail post is fail. What difference does that make? The fact still remains: at the common tasks mentioned and for measuring RAW speed of the device the Gs is faster. Just like you have setup a scenario to attempt (poorly) at showing how tweeting might be faster I can think of a bazillion other scenarios where the iPhone is faster. Like for example, browsing you know, a webpage.

Desktop class... Could you list for me the Palm Pre steps for copying a block of text from that webpage you're surfing into that message you're typing, then getting back to navigation? Just curious.

PALM PRE:

8 GB memory limit
No true apps - only webapps (so weak)
No voice and data at the same time (because of Sprint CDMA network)
No voice dialing (WTF)
No video recording (WTF?)
No voice memos (WTF)
No movie rentals (over the air or otherwise)
No visual Voicemail
No TV show rentals
No audiobook purchasing
No true app store (18 is a joke)
No console-quality games (like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, 1000's of others for iPhone)
No Peer to Peer games
No VoiceOver (the iPhone can read any screen to you, just like a Mac)
No native in-car integration (iPhone has this with dozens of cars)
No podcasts
Crippled copy/paste (for example - you can't cut or copy a webpage or any part of it)
No universal search (crippled - no e-mail search)
Tiny keyboard (iPhone landscape and portrait keyboards are bigger than Pre's real keyboard)
No auto wi-fi login (just jumps on any open network and remembers them all)
No 7.2 Mbps network speed
No Remote Wipe
No Find My Phone feature
Can't function as a Remote for the household stereo (Great for parties, especially with the iTunes DJ feature where people can request songs)
Weak battery life
More expensive than iPhone
Very scratchable screen
No oleophobic protective screen
No real music store (Apple can break the compatibility at any time and I don't want to take that chance)
No Voice Commands (control music playing by saying "Depeche Mode" for example)
No Compass
No multiple and customizable home screens like iPhone (Pre only has one screen)
No Parental Controls
No Video Editing
No onboard Ringtone Creation
No 5 person conference calls
No Webclips
