well pretty much...... just the same as when you buy a macbook one day and the next day its a macbook pro?

It's definitely an upgrade, but it's certainly not a "pro" version. Sorry, you're not that elite. It would be like buying a MBP one year and then buying another MBP the very next year.

To me, it seems that the 3GS "upgrade" is more like the Apple II GS Woz Edition...glad I skipped that one! :)

I'm sticking with my 3G until I get a better read on what the 3GS can do better.

ummm Video, Video Editing, Better Navigation, Nike +, Voice Control, Accessibility, Better Camera, Better Processing power, more memory...... Why do people insist on saying this is a minor upgrade!?!?!

If you want a fairly noticeable set of new features that really feels like you're getting value for money, when it comes to Apple, it's usually best to skip a generation.

e.g. 2G -> 3GS
Tiger -> Snow Leopard
iLife 06 -> iLife 09

Get the 3GX when it comes out :)

Ok the Tiger-Snow Leopard doesn't make sense... Leopard had over 300 + new features
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/the-unkn...ac-os-x-leopards-300+-feature-list-311244.php

and snow leopard has some new features and a lot of refinement

Haha... yes, well... what Apple define as a "New feature" can be somewhat generous. Most of them are what people would normally call unimportant minor tweaks/improvements.

A less aggressive marketing department would list the new features as:
Quick Look
New visual style
Boot Camp
Stacks

Snow Leopard has basically 0 new features, however has quite a few tweaks that, when combined with Leopard's ~296 tweaks, probably does make it worthwhile.

I've been reading a lot of posts and around the net (not just here) that say that the iPhone 3G is not a significant upgrade. Everyone is saying how dissapointed they are that there is not much that is new. My belief is that people think the 3G is not a significant upgrade just because it looks the same. If you think about it, everyone went crazy for the 3G when it was released, but really the only major differences were 3G, A-GPS, the casing, and maybe even the headphone jack. Now, the 3G is released with a faster processor, more RAM, better camera, voice-control, etc. and everyone is writing it off just because it looks the same.

What are your thoughts?

I couldn't agree with you more. I have been saying this on countless threads since the 3G S was announced. Too many people saw that it looked the same and wrote it off as a 'minor' update.
Double RAM, and faster processor. What else do u want?
<sarcasm>
A matte finish!!!!111!!ONE!!!!
</sarcasm>
Those things make it a much more significant upgrade, imo, than the iPhone 3G. The 2.0 graphics (forgot exact name) as well will make the iPhone and iPhone 3G obsolete quickly in the app market.
They won't be obsolete because a very, VERY large portion of the app audience uses iPod Touch devices, and dev's who want to get their apps out there do target the touch as well.
It's the biggest update the iphone has yet to see.

Some people only give a damn about looks because they are morons.
Truth. The moaning over Apple not including the matte casing, and the drooling over the matte leaks was sad. Thats all people care about in a phone it seems, what the back looks like. Double the speed? That means nothing to these people if it looks the same.
If your mad that it doesn't look different, then you have it backwards. Id rather have better and faster HARDWARE than anything.
Exactly, I am with you. Faster hardware > different look.

Face it, the 3G didn't need a new look, it was already sleek and professional looking. If you want a rubbery matte lint magnet in your pocket, get a case. The shiny back of the 3G looks sharp, its not my opinion, its science, and its a fact.

Yes. I guess it's a cool feature but I find it amusing that someone would include it in a list of reasons why the 3GS is a huge upgrade over the 3G.

You need to consider how much more funtional Maps is going to be with the compass function. I'll agree that the compass app in itself is quite useless for most but the map you're looking at rotating to reflect which direction you're facing is extremely useful.

This is definitely one of the bigger reasons I'm excited about this new phone.

iPhone 2G = 1,1
iPhone 3G = 1,2

iPhone 3G S = 2,1.

A minor upgrade would be 1,3.

while I agree with all of this, the one that has me most interested is what will developers do with all that extra hardware? as has been debated before, they won't take lightly to excluding the huge base of 2G, 3G and ipod touch owners.

hardware as in compass or hardware as in performance hardware

I disagree about

Anyone that is an Apple consumer cares about looks.

I have to disagree. My HTC 8525 died about 3 weeks before the iPhone launch so I researched available or upcoming phones... the reason I picked the iPhone wasn't for looks. I was carrying a cell phone and a Zune at the time and the iPhone was a good choice for a couple of reasons. It allowed me to consolidate a cell phone and an MP3 player into one device. It's also a fairly solid web browsing device as well. Those were the real selling points for me.
However, I don't believe that many people think to themselves, "I want the fugliest device that is on the market" when they go to purchase a phone. I personally wish that the iPhone wasn't as wide and long as it is, but it's a balancing act because I definitely appreciate the real estate for web browsing and movie viewing, etc.
No phone is going to be perfect, but I and I'm sure that there are others like me aren't stuck on looks since we happen to be Apple consumers.

See I would not buy the T-Mobile G-1 because of its looks......

Like I said, I guess it's cool, but it's hardly a reason to upgrade (in my mind). Turn-by-turn navigation is a way better "upgrade" and that's software-based.

IMO, apple probably didn't want many people to upgrade so their contracts would expire and they would go to verizon! :p

Ah, I can only dream, of course...
