IMO, apple probably didn't want many people to upgrade so their contracts would expire and they would go to verizon! :p

Ah, I can only dream, of course...

I honestly don't see verizon getting the iPhone until 2011 when ATT's exclusivity expires

I have to disagree. My HTC 8525 died about 3 weeks before the iPhone launch so I researched available or upcoming phones... the reason I picked the iPhone wasn't for looks. I was carrying a cell phone and a Zune at the time and the iPhone was a good choice for a couple of reasons. It allowed me to consolidate a cell phone and an MP3 player into one device. It's also a fairly solid web browsing device as well. Those were the real selling points for me.
However, I don't believe that many people think to themselves, "I want the fugliest device that is on the market" when they go to purchase a phone. I personally wish that the iPhone wasn't as wide and long as it is, but it's a balancing act because I definitely appreciate the real estate for web browsing and movie viewing, etc.
No phone is going to be perfect, but I and I'm sure that there are others like me aren't stuck on looks since we happen to be Apple consumers.

Excellent post. It's like you typed my thoughts in my own words. Thank you.

definitely a big update. A lot of people are complaining because they expected some brand new life changing device.

I still can't believe some of you legitimately believe Verizon is getting the iPhone especially since there have only been *talks* between the apple board and verizon. Infact, I know exactly how the first and the most recent meetings have been.

(Apple) "We want to design a phone and have complete control over it. We need itunes, the app store, and an overall data friendly network. Oh, your logo WILL NOT be on the phone either."
(Verizon) "Get out."

Besides what carrier would be foolish enough to take on the biggest bunch of crybabies signing petitions and complaining that they can't break contracts and get discounted phones.

what i mean is that is the soonest Verizon will see it. I agree with that ATT will be the only carrier for a very long time because all the stipulations apple puts out there

Yea I know, I know, reception is supposedly better through plastic.

Not "supposedly;" it is. I have a 2G iphone, and when I see its signal strength next to people's 3G iphones it's kinda pathetic.

That said, I do really like the look and feel of the 2G... but in this case, I think function has to win out over form.

iPhone 2G = 1,1
iPhone 3G = 1,2

iPhone 3G S = 2,1.

A minor upgrade would be 1,3.

:)

that is pretty funny. I see what you are saying.

But in all seriousness, it all depends on what each individual needs are. I bet it is safe to say that a majority of the people upgrading from the 3G to the 3G MKII (my term for it, i mean the Canon 5D MKII was more of a significant upgrade to warrant an EOS-3D name:) than the 3G to get a new suffix behind it, ala 3G-S ;) ) WANT the new features, but don't necessarily NEED them, but that said, happens with most electronics.

Sure, i would like a faster processor and ram (i have no real need for the camera, as most of the time i have my G9 and MBP with me), but it isn't enough for ME to warrant the hassle of selling my 3G and buying a new one and locking me into another 2 YR contract with AT&T. I will wait until next year and then i can finally get a discount on the iPhone, since i paid $500 for this thing. I'll just get apple care for this phone and keep it for 12 more months. I just got a new one from apple in march (dirt in the screen), so it isnt like it is that old, per se.

I am kind of interested in seeing what features the 3G MKIII will have! a GHZ processor? 64GB memory?

I agree with you in every way, shape, and form possible. And everyone practically drools over the Verizon network. I would laugh if the iPhone went to Verizon and crippled their network with all the data use. Oh, good times.

We had been contemplating an iPhone forever now and this was enough of an upgrade for us to finally give in. I'm happy about the new upgrades and $199 for a 16 gb is a great price. Unfortunately my cancellation with version is $150 though!
