To get a more permanent/reliable unlock.
Not sure why I'd do that. But whatever floats your boat. I have no qualms with the factory setup.

i'm only concerned with unlocking because I want to sell my 3g.. and unlocked phones go for like a $100 more..
Wait, so this should work with any 3G iPhone running 3.0? Sorry, but I haven't paid much attention to the unlocks since I switched to ATT. I probably wouldn't this time, but I bet I can sell it for more unlocked
Yea, I was planning to list my 3G on eBay soon but wanted to be sure of this, so I'm waiting until tomorrow to post it.
Also, is there any way to confirm that, after you unlock your iPhone, it's actually unlocked to work with other carriers? The only people I know that are still in town all have either AT&T or Verizon, which don't have SIM cards.
I'm wanting to list it in eBay as 'unlocked' but I'm worried that since I can't check it then it could end up actually not being unlocked.
Just wait...per @musclenerd's Twitter, there is a 3.0 JB and you can update to iTunes 8.2 now if you want. I wouldn't trust anyone but these guys for jailbreaks & unlocking. The iPhone costs too much to risk effing it up because you're being impatient.

Although that domain was once operated by the Dev Team, there is no way of knowing if its them still operating them at this point. All you can do is give it the benefit of doubt and trust 100% on the Dev Team's actual working blog.
I'm not sure if that was directed at me... so I'll just respond as if it was just in case.
I'm not jailbreaking/unlocking it right now, I'm waiting for the Dev Team to release it Wednesday or whenever they decide to. What I'm curious about is how can I check to make sure it is *actually* unlocked if there's no way I can put a non-AT&T SIM in there to check? I've never unlocked before, only jailbroken so I'm paranoid.

They said it was nothing. Probably just one of their members messing around. Said not to think twice about it other than the fact that they are going to show it tonight (TUES)
Nothing to be paranoid about. After you are done installing YellowSn0w, just pop the other sim in. You may need to restart, but they will give detailed instructions, don't worry!

The only SIM card that I have is my AT&T one, so what I'm getting at is even if it works for others how do I know that it works on mine?

The domain is still obviously owned by the Dev Team because ihazsupper.com still goes to the photo that was used during the conflict with Geohot. Same domain name.
No matter how much you didn't want to believe it, turns out, it was true. The evidence was abundantly obvious.

Big week!
As anyone reading this blog must already know, this is the big week where Apple releases their official 3.0 FW to the public (Wednesday), and then the new iPhone2,1 hardware, aka the iPhone 3GS (Friday).
On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd and also placed here when the feed starts. The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w. But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.
Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).
P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging partial hack results. That’s not how cat & mouse is played That’s how the cat gets fed.
