Are all your contacts still there? I don't keep my contacts on my computer and fear I would have to re-install all of them, which would be a pain.

Yes, all my contacts are still there! Just be sure you do a sync first so that your contacts (and everything else I listed above) are backed up and can be retrieved/restored.

(Note: my method MIGHT be similar to the Restore button in iTunes, however, the description in iTunes says "...restore its original settings...." and doesn't say anything about retaining/restoring my data. So I did the press-and-hold-both-buttons-method I described above (in post #50) which reset my iPhone, AND allowed me to retrieve/restore my data from the latest sync back-up file).

IT WORKED!!!
Let me preface this with the fact that I am a web developer, was extremely skeptical that it would work, and had already tried a hard reset before, but I dis something VERY DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT.

I REPEAT. I HAD DONE SEVERAL HARD RESETS BEFORE AND NONE HAD WORKED UNTIL I DID THIS:

When doing a hard reset hold both buttons until after it turns off and as the apple appears and it starts to load. When it starts to load after shutting off after the hard reset, WHILE YOU ARE STILL HOLDING DOWN BOTH BUTTONS, it will turn off again (this time for good).

That's it. That's what fixed what was an unusable iPhone 3g and turned it into something halfway between a 3G and a 3GS. =) =)

Sweet! It worked, for now :)
Thanks for the tip.

Working for me too. I immediately noticed it in Messages, where I used to have a 5 second lag on the first attempt to type. Not only did the app start up more quickly, but the lag was entirely gone. Phew.

Let's see if it gets slower over time though.

p.s. To all the people saying they should not have put this out for the 3G, you're so right! My PC wasn't able to run Windows7 because it had too little RAM, so MS came out and gave me an entirely new computer! Not only that, my fiance is getting younger and it made my hair fall back in! Score! I can't wait to try Android, I hear it puts me back in university!

Email me at jman995x@yahoo.com and let me know what you think about the Nexus One.
I've been eyeing that phone for a little while and am curious what a previous iPhone user thinks.
It's the only phone that could get me to jump ship away from the iPhone.

A friend of my (office mate) has one for development purposes. It remains in a drawer.

Imagine you want a Corvette, but don't like GM. So what you do is buy a Mustang, take off all the bumpers and such, and replace them from a Corvette at the wreckers. It kinda looks like a Corvette, it kind of drives like a Corvette, its cheaper than a Corvette, and it's absolutely not a Corvette.

Android is MS all over again; it all kinda works, but only in the barest way, and it looks like it was designed by high school students. Even the progress bar in the web browser is just butt ugly. If you don't care about looks (I do) and you think of Corvette bumpers on a Mustang as "cool maker/hacker work" as opposed to "to cheap to buy", then you'll love the Nexus 1. You can do things Apple won't let you, it can be cheaper in theory, and it does generally work. But it's not an iPhone.

No way it worked for me. My 3G became so sluggish, and was hanging up for 10-12 seconds so often, that I had to revert to 3.1

I'm now in the process to recover my information from a Feb 2010 backup.

i HAD 4.0 running on my 3G then i had to get a replacement from apple that came with 3.1.3.

Well i stick with 3.1.3 and jailbroke it and cant be happier! using categories as my folders thing works great. biteSMS my txting. And just trying to get my push working through Wifi.. thats the only thing that actually worked on 4.0 but doesnt now..

The phone is quick and responsive like never before. Just downgrade guys and get rid of the headaches..

"Hard reboot" definitely fixed my problems

It's been working flawlessly since doing the hard reboot yesterday. No crashes, no app quits, no odd slowdowns. Just like 3.x, but better.

The "hold down button" thing above didn't help me.

Apple genius guy said I should do a factory restore and set up as a new phone. At that point, i'll lose all my contacts anyway (no idea how to back them up on a pc)- so I might as well roll back to 3 at that point, right?

Restore software and data

Why not do the factory restore (the Apple software) AND restore your data? That's essentially what I did. See my post #50 in this thread for the steps.

I've done that (factory reset then restore from backup), with no luck.

apple advised I should do a factory reset and setup as a new phone (under iOS4)

If i'm going to lose everything; I'd rather roll back to 3 (was my point)

Macster84,

I got to step 5 of your procedure and then things got confusing, iTunes asked me if I wanted to restore my iPhone, warning me that if I did I would lose all my data and it would be restored to the factory default settings. I didn't see anything about restoring my backup.

But I was wondering if I could just right click my iPhone in iTunes, under Devices, and then click the "restore from backup" option?

Step 5 with the warning sounds right. It wipes your iPhone clean and puts the original factory software back on it. After that is done, step 6 happens. As long as you did a sync 1st, and verified the backup exists, you can put you can restore your data next.

Your 2nd paragraph: you could do that instead of step 5, but most likely, the slowness issue isn't caused by your data, but the factory software and their settings, caches, etc.

As I mentioned before, it appears the steps I did are essentially two separate restores. And yes, you can do it in iTunes:
1. iTunes / Summary tab / Version / Restore (original factory settings and software).
2. iTunes / Devices / right click / Restore from back-up (your data).

Okay I figured that out. I don't see any speed improvements with OS4 and I lost my saved and sent emails.

One issue did crop up during all this. Camera Roll shows I have 79 pictures, yet I can't see them in the initial Camera Roll contact sheet screen. It shows up as all black. Yet if I randomly pick on spot on the black area, it opens one of my pictures. I tried taking a new picture and it showed up fine on the contact sheet. My Photo Library contact sheet is also fine. Any suggestions?

If it didn't restore your data, try restoring data from a prior backup in iTunes / Devices / right click / restore. And if there isn't one there, try retrieving (copying) a prior back-up file from Time Machine or any other backup system you have.

Emails should match your desktop computer's. At first, mine appeared to be gone too, but then they came back, 1 screen at a time, as they were eventually redownloaded from various email account servers back to the iPhone.

Yes the inbox emails match, but any of the emails I sent out from my iPhone are gone.

I had ios4 installed on my 8gb 3G ... it was slow to start with and i did a number of the hard resets as described ( admittedly I haven't tried the restore data route though ). Whilst the hard resets did result in a marked improvement to begin with, I found that it still bogged down after a while. Not as bad as before the hard resets, but still it was frustrating to use with the keyboard not responding, then catching up, scrolling not responding then catching up in Safari, and longer than normal pauses with loading and all round general use. It just made the whole use of the machine an annoying experience on a regular basis.

It had to go.

So I downgraded today, and its all round much much faster and the way I had become accustomed to.

On the general issue, I don't think that ios4 should have been targeted at the 3G phone as something worth installing. I just dont think that the additions merit the hassle, and that there are so many of ios4's big features not implemented on the 3G that its almost a bit pointless. I almost feel as though they could have had a ios4 update, and then a ios3 update for the older machines.

It also makes me wonder whether ios4 is beginning to suffer from bloat, and that to an extent, its being masked by the faster processing power of the new machine, but thats a different thread.

My 3G was also EXTREMELY slow with OS4. I really don't know why they would release it for the 3G!! I thought that it may seem faster over time but it was just not usable. I downgraded back to 3.1.3 and I noticed a huge difference.

I'm going to upgrade to an Android Nexus One on Monday and avoid upgrading to the iP4 problems.

Cheers.

how do you downgrade.
