Could someone who had a successful fast iphone due to a hard reset post a video of their iphone in action? I have a feeling each of us have a different opinion of what is considered fast and would like to compare our phones to a standard speed. Thanks.

For me, when ios4 was working at its best on my 3G, i would say that overall, things happened at roughly the same speed, but that the display update was noticably laggy ... so overall speed **when working properly** didn't really change. it just wasn't reliably keeping that speed up, and certainly wasn't doing it in the smooth manner.

On ios3, if you send a text message, the bubble always smoothly moves up into the thread, and the progress bar moves up smoothly. On ios4, the bubble move was jerky ... to the point it would just jump in a single move to being in the thread. The progress bar would jump up in about 4 or 5 jerks. Time taken to complete the tasks between each stayed similar though.

Cant really show you a vid, but for me, I would describe it as the difference between a ios3 smooth running computer game, and ios4 being one where the frame rate is dropped dramatically to about 5fps ... but the rate of gameplay being the same,

ios4 slow on 3G (Performance Much Improved Now)

Hello,

After putting ios4 on my 3G, the performance was unbearable. I tried what "zandy" suggested on "Jul 4, 2010, 02:58 PM" and went into Settings-Safari and 1) Delete Cache, 2) Delete History, and 3) Delete Cookies, and now my performance is much better. It may even be the same as prior to ios4.

I guess this would help you all...

Hi all,
After going through tons of forums & articles about iPhone 3G & iOS4 performance issues, I did the following n my iPhone 3G works ultrafast. I have compared its performance with 3GS & even iPhone 4. It is way speedier than iPhone 3GS with iOS4.

The only constraints are that the procedure consumes much root partition space and you need a mac to do it. I wish this helps u guys as well since we all paid well for our iPhone 3G phones n we DO deserve all iOS4 features :)

well, to start with, i used pwnage tool 4.0 (specifically 4.0) to jailbreak. When it asks for the root partition size in expert mode, initially i tried with default root partition size, it was tooooo damn slow.... then with 1GB, again too slow.... then with 2GB, bit better but yet not impressive. Later i did jailbreak with 3GB root partition and it helped tremendously.

Do NOT install install any app after jailbreak, just go to Cydia, add the ultrasn0W repo n unlock it.

Then do hard reset couple of times. The trick is to press the power n home buttons until shutdown msg appears and apple logo comes, keep holding it down for around 15 seconds more. It might turn off completely or restart. In case it turns off, turn it on and again press both buttons, this time it would turn off for good. In case it reboots, keep holding the buttons until its completely turned off.

Then I used Cyberduck to access phone and deleted all daemons apart from the ones attached (feel free to download) [use ONLY Cyberduck PLEASE)

Also, DO NOT install SBSettings. It would make it very slow. Tried myself many times.

The other trick is to only keep required apps running in multi-tasking. Kill other apps.

N yes, in case u use hotmail for email, route it to gmail. DO NOT use hotmail. I dont know why but this makes iOS4 sluggish.

UPDATE: In case u dont want to use fancy icon shadows, Navigate to

System/Library/Coreservices/Springboard.app

Scroll to the very bottom... Their are a bunch of wallpaper pngs.. Rename or delete

Hope it helps.

Keep Rocking!! :)

To the originator....of a slow 3g phone with ios4

I had the same issue with my 3g 8 gig.. I tried to downgrade the software but couldn't... try this.. It should help..

Go to "settings".. "General"... "Spotlight search" and uncheck all the selections there....(we hardly ever use this feature).. now turn off nd turn on your iphone again.. and it should help... Let me know.. THis is the easiest and best option I have come across so far. You dont even have to downgrade to ios 3

Peace ..

hi all,

os4 has killed my 3g ....almost :(

have tried a reinstall of os4 but that didnt do much at all

will try turning the search off - btw it is in the home button section and then search option

my apps can take 10 seconds to load! not much use when trying to add a quick note/task

good luck :)

cheers

Turn Off Spotlight Search People!!!

I've updated my 16Gb 3G to iOS4 and it's now running very slowly - annoyingly slowly.

I've seen others says that iOS4 has speeded up their 3Gs, so it there anything I can do to improve mine?

Cheers

Phil
I'm not sure if you're talking iPhone 3G or iPhone 3Gs, I know for the 3G these will speed things up. ...but downgrade is for either phone.

I have to say that, with iOS4 all apps that use the GPS function...GPS works MUCH better & faster (Apple rewrote the algorithm for GPS/location services). With everything else speed & issues can vary.

TURN OFF SPOTLIGHT SEARCH.
...as per an Apple Genius and as other people have stated in other forum posts. (this WILL speed up at least the 3G iPhones, not sure about 3Gs)

ALSO:
I then went into the Safari options (Settings -> Safari) and cleared the History, the Cookies and the Cache. This improved things straight away and I am back to normal speed.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS: go back to 3.1.3 or if, as in the case of my 3G, wifi quit working and going back to 3.1.3 did not fix this, go to your nearest Apple Genius Bar--I got a new iPhone 3G with iOS 3.1.3.

downgrade instructions here: how to downgrade from iOS4 to 3.1.3

I dont know you all are talking about. My iphone is running slow as hell.
I had to disable all of the spotlight feature to help with the slowness.

How can this be...i don't understand

i did the downgrade and it worked nicely, i am happy, but now i have more bars and 3g network than when i had the iOS 4, it only had 1/2 bars and gprs network i can't believe it

IT's DAMM WONDERFUL!!! :D :D :D :D :D

ILL KEEP IT!! just until e get the iP4 or the iP5 in January or whatever!

I know i'm now a happy camper eheh

I did the spotlight thing and clear cache but still rubbish.
I suspect that only doing the os3 thing will
sort the 3G but I need os 4 unfortunately
for direct alarms

cheers

This is NOT a solution

This is NOT a solution!! While this may temporarily fix (for a couple minutes) the problem, your POS iphone will be back to running slow after the memory is drained, etc. While I am not surprised that apple would release a product that is completely incompatible with the 3G, it still does piss me off. I CAN NOT WAIT TO GET MY DROID X!!!!

In the mean time, the ONLY solution I've heard of that is at least somewhat viable, is to disable spotlight search. You can do this in the iphone settings.

JUST DO A HARD RESET!!!!
nothing else.

to FIX the SLOW performance on iPhone 3G with iOS4, just do a Hard Reset: press and hold the lock button and the home button together till the iPhone shutdown. Wait some seconds (15 +-) and then turn it on again.

do it twice.. or even more.
I had to do it 3 times.

It fixes a lot of things on iPhone and my iPhone 3G is running as fast as ever.

=D

I definitely agree with almost all of this! I've never liked Apple for a multitude of reasons, but I bought the iphone because it was the best product out there. After almost 1 year and 11 months, the phone I have is far from the best out there. With the upgraded OS, my 3G is barely usable. It's pathetic that apple would release this to 3G users. It was clearly a strategy to encourage people to upgrade to the iphone 4.

Well, sorry apple but next month when my contract expires, I'm switching to the Droid X. I cannot wait!! My 2 years as an apple product owner will be over!!

It seems to me that us 3g users were scammed. Scammed into having to upgrade to remedy our frustrations. Seems like apple is becoming spottier, and spottier with their products. I'm a machead don't get me wrong, but the quality in their products are becoming unsatisfactory.

If you think about it from a business standpoint, they phased out the iPhone, slowly they're phasing out the 3g, which was made a lot cheaper than the original iPhone, just so they could mass produce for the supply and demand factor. Now that we've been scammed into a half ass product, now they give us half ass software to tag alongside the actual hardware which causes nothing, but frustration and either it's a ploy to get you to ditch them, or possibly get you to just upgrade to the iPhone 4.
Which to me seems to be a great move, but what about the backwards compatibility for the devices we already own. I have 4 iPhones that I've accumulated over the years. 2 from contract, 2 from owners who no longer had the ability to use the product, or were just fed up with it.
So when I upgrade I switch about my sim card to process the upgrade.
now the iphone I paid $599 for 3 years ago, that processes things faster than my 3g is going to be pretty much obsolete?

Honestly there should be more of a shelf life left for these things, but apple is steadily, and increasingly updating their products to try to suit the needs of the consumer more so than they are trying to put the heart into it to actual get fixes, and push a decent product.

I mean think about it. The iPhone 4 was obviously tested before they let it out of their labs, and the majority of users are having an antenna issue. Don't you think Apple caught that during their testing phases? Of course they did, but instead of remedying the situation before pushing the product out to the public by changing the make of the actual phone they released a bumper style casing that wraps around the phones antenna to prevent that skin to metal contact. Now I'm not a scientist or the smartest man alive by any means. I am a person with an opinion and in my opinion it took apple 4 tiers of phones to push out their own line of a "case." That to me my friends sounds suspicious, and a little lewd. To think the masses won't catch onto this, but there are some of us out there that put a little thought into things. Of course the spotty AT&T network, and the antenna problem won't be preventing me from purchasing an iPhone 4 eventually, because of my love for all things apple, but I'm just saying... they've been letting us down as of lately.
The bigger the beast the less of a heart.
This is what happened to microsoft. They bigger they got, the less attention they started to pay towards things. It's all about supply and demand. If the consumer demands it, they'll produce and deliver. If they'd take their time to develop these things they'd be a lot better off.
Given I know field testing needs to be involved, but they should have a lot more kinks worked out before pushing these things out to the masses.

Sorry if you don't like my opinion. I'll stand by apple til i'm blue in the face, but I am giving an opinion since I've been seeing a lot of disappointment, and less heart put into it from the start and finish of the first iphone.

Think about it guys.

Something that sped up my phone

I disable the spotlight feature as someone else posted on one of these sites. General Settings Icon-->General--->Home Button--->Spotlight Search. Then I disabled a the checkmarks. I noticed a big difference. At least I can use the stupid phone now until the geniuses at Apple do a 4.01 update that fixes the mess for Iphone 3g users.

PS. If you are from Apple and reading this, fix this problem in 4.01. This is stupid.
