Has anyone else had a chance to demo the new G1 yet? What are your first impressions?

I stopped in a T-Mobile store yesterday to check it out. I only played with it for about 5 minutes but here is what I found.
It is not near as ugly nor as bulky as I had thought, it is a handful but no worse than any other smart phone.
Touch screen worked well, smooth action and unlike someone else said earlier it doesn't require you to "push" on the screen. It had a nice feel to it when using.
I live near Louisville, KY and this is not a T-Mobile 3G area(yet) so it was on Edge and it seemed to download the few things I tried relatively quickly. Not WiFi speed but not dialup either ;)
Street view is pretty cool, I'm not sure how much use I'd get out of it, but it is cool ;)

UI is not near as nice as the Iphone UI, it is nice that not everything is stored on the homescreen but it is not as easy to just pick up and use.
Example: I was trying to test the speed on Foxnews.com and so I pulled up a webpage. I went to enter the URL and I couldn't quickly figure out how to do this ( I tried tapping the current webpage URL and nothing happened) so I just did a search on Google.
And the lack of an onscreen keyboard is not as nice, since I just wanted to type a short phrase (FoxNews) it would have been nice to have a keyboard other than the pullout one.
Zoom is not near as easy, it has a little + - to zoom in/out, no pinch. This was a little awkard as well.

Overall, my impressions are positive. It is much nicer than the Instinct that I played with earlier in the year. I don't think the G1 is an Iphone killer, but it is a nice alternative to someone that wants something else.

These are just my impressions from 5 minutes of playing with one.

Yep. I agree with you. I pretty much experienced the same. One thing I'm wondering about though is the screen. The iPhone has a solid piece of (glass?) over the screen that is durable. The G1 felt like just a regular non-glossy computer screen. It seems vulnerable. Did it seem that way to you?

Good question. Anybody know what the G1 has? Is it more droppable?

The iPhone has a piece of optical (clear) glass. Not tempered glass, which is why it breaks into very sharp shards.

Now you have me wondering also. I can't remember what the screen was, it didn't "feel" like glass though so I wonder what it is.

One other thing that I find somewhat annoying when looking at other phones, I've had this happen with 3 other smart phones (Mogul, Instinct and G1) they don't put live phones on the sales floor. You always have to ask to see one that actually is functional. I much prefer how the apple store (and AT&T) does it where the Iphones are on the floor so that you can just go in and start trying them out without a sales rep hanging on you until you are done. This may not be the same at other stores but it sure is common whenever I go to check out a phone.

I love the iPhone I hate the fact it's with AT&T.. The iPhone is a better phone but the G1 is not to fare behind.. But you can't really compare the two...

I'm planing on keeping my iPhone this because it has the things I love

iPod
Internet
Games

Maybe I need a iPod touch now with G1 the best of both worlds

I'm using G1

Voice calls
Text with pics
Google maps with GPS is better
"has street view"

thats cuz AT&T SUCKS in San Fran because of the amount of load they have from the amount of iPhone's in use there. I talked to Noah from phonedog.com about it and he said thats the only reason he's on tmobile with his iPhone. Obviously the T-Mobile 3G will seem faster there due to the fact that there load isn't high at all. For instance, here in Michigan, AT&T 3G is BEAST, while T-Mobile's is definitely the worst out of the 4 major networks.

Oh, and one more thing ... that "hump" on the right of the keyboard really does get in the way. It slowed my typing big time. Because of that, I would say that someone can NOT type faster on the G1 than they can on the iPhone. In fact, I think you could type faster on the iPhone. That's an honest, non-biased answer.

I've tried my friends G1.. Simply put it feels like its still in beta :p ( software and hardware)

And 2.2 isn't still in beta? :D

AFAIC Apple need to sort out cut'n'paste, text forwarding and the abysmal Bluetooth stack before they have a proper non-beta phone OS. :D

I still have to switch my SIM card back to my old WM6 HTC Tytn II when I need to use the phone in my car - which thankfully isn't as often as it used to be 'cause my current client is only a few minutes from my home.

wow, that's a surprise! thanks for the info.

They said basically the same thing I said about typing:
"awkward to hold the phone when typing messages, since your right hand doesn't quite have the full range of motion. It definitely affected the speed and accuracy of typing."

Because of this, I was NOT able to type faster on the G1 than I can on the iPhone.

"There's even a setting to send a contact's phone call directly to voice mail every time -- good if you really don't like someone, we suppose." Hahaha!!! This one's hillarious!
