iPhone 3G S will have an Oil Resistant Coating

http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/21391/

Eagle-eyed MacDailyNews reader "GizmoDan" found the following on Apple's "iPhone How To: Cleaning iPhone" page:

To clean iPhone, unplug all cables and turn off iPhone (press and hold the Sleep/ Wake button, then slide the onscreen slider). Then use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPhone. If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G S only), simply wipe your iPhone’s screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands and face.

According to Merriam-Webster, Oleophobic means "having or relating to a lack of strong affinity for oils."

In other words, Apple's new iPhone 3G S's Multi-Touch™ screen is skin oil repellent*. Less iPhone smudging and wiping is a Very Good Thing™.

Good thing my greasy faced years are long gone, haha.

It's little "innoventions" like this that edge the iPhone out into the front, or should I say it "3G S's" the iPhone out into the front?

Waaan waan waa ... Lame joke.

Oil and Solution

Regardless and just a reminder, you can find great products like iKlenz or even the Apple store sells a solution for the screens of their products. Oil is oil, so this Oleophobic material can help, but to completely remove oils and keep your iPhone screen like new its better to look into these cleaners to "restore" the iPhone's look without oil blemishes.

interesting... more reason to pick one up on the 19th...

I'm not even going to pre-order, just gonna stroll in, and if they have one, it's mine, if they don't, it wasn't meant to be :p

sorry to dissapoint but the 'anti-fingerprint screen' doesnt actually work!

i still get prints and smudges... very dissapointing...!

Of course you still get prints and smudges - your fingertips are oily. But with the new coating, you get far less prints and smudges, and they're far easier to remove.

Yup, the smudges that do stick aren't the thick, oily, wet variety you get on the touch or 3G. On those screens, the oil would reflect light and actually obscure my vision of the screen in well lit environments. Attempting to wipe off the screen would result in pushing the mess around even more until you used a proper cloth and liquid.

The 3GS smudges are dry and dull and easily removed with the wipe of a cotton shirt. Glorious!

agreed. i just got my white 3gs a couple of days ago, and after having an orignal iPhone for the past 2 years, this screen is exponentially easier to clean than my old one. a couple of swipes from my American Apparel tee and the screen is squeaky clean :)

Watching all the comments here about the i-phones new oleophobic coating, things like, cool, nice, super duper etc. The proof in something actually working is when the item in question actually starts being used................here's a rather interesting write up about the new coating > http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-10280454-233.html

Another problem for apple to "fix"

No, not really. Apple make no claims to the coating lasting for ever. I've had my 3Gs since 1 July last year and the coating is just beginning to wear off. Not bad for 10 months.

I'm not a fan of the coating. Yeah it does keeps finger prints off, but it still gets "cloudy". Either way I need to wipe it off, the down side is that it is a coating and will wear off eventually.

I'm hoping the new iPhone coming out this year won't have this coating.

I know this is an old thread. but just wanted to comment that I haven't noticed my coating wearing off at all, and it really has made a difference in how much easier it is to get fingerprints off (as compared to my 2G Touch). So far (got it on launch day), I like it.

Up until a couple of days ago, my screen had been covered by a BSE shield (got it on launch day). The corners were starting to come up and collect grime so I figured I'd just skip it from now on since I'll probably be getting the new one and I've never actually went through with selling my old ones.

This phone feels so much better naked and the oleophobic coating is a god-send. I, for one, hope they include it on the next iPhone.
