I can't see why the 5Meg camera should be a problem. The main reason for this being that as the iPhone has been redesigned (away from the curved shape used onthe 3GS and current iPod Touch) why not a case refresh for the iPod touch as well? As apple are so brand centric it is unlikely that the iPod will keep the now dated (compared to the iPhone 4) looking case profile...

For the iPod touch to remain a realistic alternative to the iPhone it needs to offeral the same features including camera and GPS but without the phone element. Anything less and there simply isn't enough of a price differeance to merit its continued existance.

Sooooo Wrong, I dare you to really calculate the true cost of the iPhone 4 for the average User,.......Now tell me the One shot iPod Buyer deserves the same consideration.

If you don't want to commit to the product,....Don't expect the world with your minimum contribution to development. Your 3-400 Dollars is really just a one shot drop in the pond.

You will but it and be Happy :p

the prices are unlikely to move much so on that basis:

price for 32GB ipod touch £234
price for 32GB iphone 4 £599

that is one pretty big price difference and more than enough to justify its existance if only that it is a competitor to the psp/ds so apple will make it have the gyroscope and retina display above cameras/facetime simply because they make money selling apps, as for the GPS not going to happen

I sure the ipod touch will have a camera/video in the next gen, but I'd much rather see a new kick ass screen.

Any word on a new kick ass screen?

It better have some Excel support though ...

I don't know about the ipad but the iphone has an app for excel
"documents to go"

and isn't Apple working on Apple Works for the ipad
I think Microsoft said there will be a office 2010 for the iphone/ipad.

I think you can run the web based excel from google docs and microsoft office online over safari.

That is what I thought.

So I was excited to get the iPad and utilize the Larger Screen.

But ,. Nope...No Support for Excel

It may have changed by now, I returned the thing the first week ,so....maybe

logic doesn't really gel well with Jobsie's obsession with thin. He's like a supermodel agent or something
Don't forget that the iPod touch increased in thickness from 7.9 to 8.5mm between the first and second generation models.

The iPhone also increased in thickness between the first and second generation models. Even Apple realizes that sometimes giving up thinness is a decent compromise for additional performance and functionality.

If Apple makes the iPod touch 4 the same form factor as the iPhone 4, the net gain in thickness over the original iPod touch would be 1.4mm. It would still be 1.2mm thinner than the iPod classic.

At first blush they could probably make the iPod touch 4 a little thinner, maybe keep the 8.5 mm, use the same front and back glass and a slightly less wide antenna/frame, after all it doesn't need the 3G antenna, just Wi-Fi. Same retina display, same 5 MP camera, but then I thought about the "bumpers" Apple is selling. Would they make the 9.3 mm iPhone 4 bumpers in six designer colours plus another set of 8.5 mm iPod touch 4 bumpers in the same or different colours?

I vote for keeping it at the larger, iPhone 4 matching, case of 9.3 mm of thinness.

Obviously the 5mp cam and hd video are huge selling points for the iPhone which makes apple much more money over the course of the hardware's lifespan. My suggestion to everyone complaining is to buy an iPhone.

I'll buy it if it has the same 5mp/720p camera as the ip4, and retina display. If it has that 3gs camera, no deal.

I, for one, don't want the iPod Touch to have the same body as the iPhone 4. Those products need to have their own identities.

To make the new iTouch look the exact same as the iPhone 4 would take some of the wow out of the iPhone IMO.

To be affordable, I don't think the iTouch could have a 5MP cam or the Retina Display.

I completely agree with you about the cost. If the $188 parts cost estimate for the 16 GB iPhone 4 is anywhere near correct, just removing the cell-phone parts couldn't bring the cost down to make the device salable at the current price points for the Touch. If the new model has the Retina display, it's going to be sporting a price increase as well.

They need to give up on the obsessive-compulsive, bulemic, "thin-ness" thing. Put in the damn cameras and a decent size hard disk and battery! How complicated is that?

Maybe, if I didn't have to tolerate paying through the nose every month AND get a crap size hard disk. I don't want the damn phone, get it? I want an iPod.

I'd rather they keep it as slim as it is now, rounded off and all. iPod Touch users also carry a phone with them, so if it's bulky (well, it is already since it's quite big compared to a phone) people will think twice before taking it with them. An iPhone on the other hand can be thicker since you're taking your phone with you no matter what anyway.

I don't see why they won't adopt the iPhone 4's style and add the 5MP camera. Seems logical to me IMO.

First post!

I agree..... Who says the iPod touch will be the same form factor? I do not understand why we are comparing cameras to the current design.

I don't see any point to this "news" which is nothing more than anyone's guess. Why don't we just skip all this and wait for Steve to show us what they've come up with in September.

Because, Trip, with all due respect, the name of the site is MacRumors, not MacHardConfirmedFacts. Live a little. Speculation is fun.

I do not think that the iPod Touch and iPad will get a back-facing camera. I only think that they will get front-facing ones for facetime.

Yes iPT Has 2 RAM Spaces While Phone Has Only One

I doubt we are going to see a 128GB iPod Touch. I realize there are 64GB modules out there, but last I knew it wasn't cost affective to put two in a device. (Or one in the iPhone 4 for that matter)...but I could be wrong.

To my knowledge, the iPhone 4 has one spot holding a 32GB, where the 64GB iPod Touch has two spots, holding two 32GB chips...yes?
Yes. But at some point the newer 64GB RAM modules have to be the price of the old 32s. And that point could be this Fall. I'm hoping so anyway. But I don't follow the wholesale prices of those modules so I don't know how their prices compare to when the 32GB modules came down to the former price of 16 GB mods last year. This is the first year the maximum RAM in the iPhone didn't double. So while the iPod Touch might be the first device to sport a pair of 64GB sticks, only time will tell if the parts market is ready to make that switch yet.

Anyone here know what's up with 64GB Flash RAM production, pricing and supply volumes? You've got to figure Apple has a standing order for those as soon as both volume and price reach a certain level they require to keep the retail prices of their devices the same with the larger amount of RAM inside.
