This is an EXCELLENT question that I would love the answer to. Currently, the 2G/3G "speakerphone" is an insult to the iphone.

I'm not sure about 3G, but it's MUCH louder than the 2G. The speakerphone is actually at a useable level and mic sensitivity has increased too. The 2G speakerphone was only useable if you're 6" away. The 3GS works great a couple feet away, and, as mentioned, the speaker volume is room filling.

I would have to agree. I was messing around with Voice Recognition and it played some of my Metallica. It was noticeably louder even though it was music. I'm gonna call somebody and try out speakerphone.

I definately notice a lot less if any distortion at max volume now.. so far I would have to say the speaker may not be actually louder, but more robust and improved.. it sounds less hollow than the 3g and more high quality.
