I think there will be a bit longer than a year before we see another one, if only because AT&T's got everyone under 2-year subsidized contracts. Doubtful they'll let everyone out for an upgrade price a year early.

At least one more release before AT&T's exclusivity is up though.

I see what you're saying, but it would make more sense to me if they had a new version to woo people who didn't get the 3g and trap more current customers by extending their contract 2 more years when upgrading.

I also like the announce in Jan release in July bet. Android will start popping up with low-end models around Christmas. Perfect time to tell consumers what is in store if they wait for the next coming of iPhone.

I have seen several comments on here like this.....does anyone realize that they are actually eligible for another subsidized phone in 17 months, rather than exactly two years?

We'll see one a year, every year. In July. People who have iPhone 3G will pay the unsubsidized price, or wait 5 months until December.

Apple is not known for speedy or cutting edge upgrades. Look at their other products and you'll get a good idea of what is to come.

I see software and OS upgrades in our immediate future. New handsets next year except for a Hd size increase.

Regardless of our purchase now we will be able to buy the new handsets because apple will be charging unsubsidised pricing like the 1st gen. Newer hardware = bigger upgrade = bigger price and the ability to charge whatever.

If this to be the case, it will most likely be an announcement only and the release will be in July (just like the original iPhone... Macworld announcement, July Release) ;)

I don't think they would want the announcement and release so far apart. Their sales would hit the toilet on the current version. Doing that for the original was fine - no sales to cut into at that time.

We will see more software updates in January.

I can say now that i'm 95% sure we are going to see a new iPhone every single year in the June / July time frame. The next iPhone will be an unsubsidized price though, so i expect to see a lot more hardware features, as we will be paying for the phone up front, of about $400-$500

This seems most likely, IMO.

Just speculating, but we'd see a HD increase, video camera/better camera, and more basic features (MMS, copy/paste, etc) at a minimum, I'm sure.

Which brings up the question for me - will I buy a new iPhone each year or every two years? eh?

Absolutely no evidence [thread] that AT&T will not continue to subsidize future generations of iPhone.

Very good point. Which means that if Vinom rummor is true we will be seeing a complete refresh closer to 6 months than next summer.

I am aware - that's why I predicted ~18 months release for next h/w version, rather than ~6 months.

I think this is more likely than a "new" iPhone in 6 months. That's not realistic.

iPhone software 2.5 or 3.0 in around 6 months, new iPhone a year after that.

it would make sence that this one is the cheap mass market iphone. and they will release a power user device for 599 or 699 non subsidised. That way if you want to be cheap you get the plastic small battery so so screen. and if you are an early adopter or a power user you pay for the better in all areas device. I dont think that the power users will be mad. because it will be to expensive for the cheap people anyway, and the early adopters will always buy the latest and greatest no matter what the price. its all about exclusivity

A friend of mine who works for Apple gave me the scoop on the iPhone 3G about 1 1/2 months before SJ announced it. He was correct in telling me about the current release specs. He tells me now that there will most likely be a new iPhone released (announced) at Macworld in January. He claims that the January releases will be the major upgrade with the July update being incremental. He also told me that from now on, I should get on the January release cycle, not the July cycle.

Allegedly, SJ wanted this most recent update to be a much more major one, but logistics wouldn't allow. Therefore Apple slapped a couple of new chips in the old motherboard and, viola, iPhone 3G. This was just to satisfy the immediate needs for an iPhone with 3G technology.

The January update will be a completely redesigned motherboard that will integrate much more technology, even more efficiently. THIS is the one that most likely will have the front facing camera for video-conferencing, etc. Unfortunately, those of us like me who just upgraded to iPhone 3G may not be eligible for the subsidized pricing at that point. I will upgrade to this one anyway and stick to the January cycle from there on out.

Ah, yes, the mysterious all-knowing friend who is privy to all of apple's secrets. I for one totally believe this .

January has always been a budget and goals month. a month to plan for development not typically to release it (unless you're running LATE). 4th quarter is the golden quarter, always has been always will be. summer/fall product lines are always strong contenders for award season (entertainment) and holiday sales (electronics).

i see an apple trend matching both the "summer blockbuster" and the "coveted christmas toy" on the calendar. by christmas every kid in america will be the "last one on the planet without an iphone... PLEASE MOM!>?"

They wont release something that current owners could not upgrade to cheaply, even if it was a trade-in program. Everyone has a "friend" at Apple, the entire nerd world knew a couple months before the announcement.

I can assure you that no real details about the new phone are public knowledge, certainly not release dates or specifics related to boards, etc.

I would expect the next gen no sooner than a year with a 32gb upgrade coming by Xmas, just bigger. The next iphone, prolly next summer, will likely have a front camera for video conf, better battery and maybe another bell or whistle.

ash =o)

Yeah. what he said :)

The next Gen iPhone is going to be $99 and $199 (because in 2 months the 3G will drop in price).
But the data plan will be $60 per month and text will be $25 for 200txt per month. Still no cut and paste. Batt life will be the same as the 3G. :p

not much of a prediction...

I am skeptical as well. The only reason that I posted this on a forum on Mac Rumors is that he was dead-on about the iPhone 3G only being upgraded with a new 3G radio and a GPS chip on the same original motherboard.

It is only a rumor, no more and no less. Time will tell if my friend is correct about January.

Everyone and his mother knew about 3G and the GPS part. Many had a bunch of other things on that list too.

So your friend is saying that Steve's goal is to put Americans on lines for hours and hours awaiting phone activations to satisfy his contract with AT&T during blizzards and freezing temperatures in many parts of the country?

All so he can do that over and over annually in January? Yeah right.:p

Your new toy will be obsolete in less than a year. Deal with it...it's the Apple way.

Don't call it 3G, and DEFINITELY don't call it 4G unless it is actually a 4G phone.

Actually, the current one should be called "Fake 3G" because it has no video call.

Video calling does not make a phone 3G. The network specifications that it can handle make it 3G.

Your post is full of elitist nonsense. Unsubsidized users paid $499 for THIS year's iPhone.

Personally, I can see a larger HD only in about 6 months. The only thing that makes me want to pass on the phone is because there is no video conferencing. It should be mandatory on the advanced phone with 3G.

It's plausible to me for Apple to start an iPhone Pro in January while incrementing the "basic" iPhone 3G.

On the video conferencing front, one reason it wasn't included is that the network couldn't handle it in its current state. It can hardly handle regular phone calls and data speeds for 3G have already dipped to bellow EDGE in some markets.
