iPhone 4 versus Tiger

There are actually three issues. iTunes 9.2, Mac OS X 10.5.8, and USB 2.0. Almost all of the G4 iMacs will run iTunes 9.2 (which to me seems like it should be the only requirement, but apparently I'm wrong). Most G4 iMacs will run Mac OS X 10.5.8. However, quite a few iMacs are stuck with USB 1.1.

I'm a long time Mac user and yes, fanboi. However, it's situations like this where my long term Mac loyalty is challenged. My daughter has one of these iMacs with USB 1.1. There was some snipey remarks about someone being able to afford an iPhone but not a new computer. My response is this. Life is full of choices. Right now my daughter chooses to be a student and work part time. She chooses to have a 52" LCD TV instead of a new Mac. She chooses to have an iPhone instead of a Samsung. All of these are legitimate choices given her limited budget. For some reason Apple has chosen to punish her for her decisions - not consciously - but it's still a punishment.

I think it's almost criminal that the Mac requirements are much harder to meet than the PC requirements.

I think it's almost criminal that every other smart phone on the market will let me move files back and forth in a USB mass storage mode, but iPhone will not. This would have been a solution to her problem since the only thing she wants to sync on her iPhone are her mp3s.

I personally would not own an iPhone because of Apple's walled garden business model. It's the opposite of the Mac where there are (generally) no walls.

One more thing regarding getting Mac OS X discs on eBay or Craigslist. Buyer beware. Most people are selling the non-generic versions that are targeted to a particular hardware configuration which is probably not your configuration (otherwise you would probably already have the right OS version). I know 5 people that have bought OS X from eBay, all of which claimed to be retail versions. None of them worked. None of the returns worked out. All 5 people lost their money. I'm not saying that there are no legitimate options, I'm just saying, in the words of Elmer Fudd, "Be vewy, vewy, cawefull!"

So in the end...

Oh wow, you were almost making sense and then you totally blew it. Apple already devleops for that population, it's call people who own Windows machines. Regardless of that asinine bit of information, it's not a hardware issue. I do own a MBP. That was released in 2006. That came with Tiger installed on it. It ran Tiger like a champ. It runs Leopard like a champ. Yet its the same hardware. You clearly don't need a new mac to run Leopard, which means that there's no hardware reason that the iPhone 4 shouldn't be able to run on any intel Mac. If you had tried to make the argument that Apple isn't going to support people who don't want to pony up $29 to upgrade to SL, you may have had a point, but your hardware argument is both poor and misplaced.

Seriously I am HIGHLY deceived. Makes no sense that I had to use a PC to activate my iPhone 4 and now I can't even sync my music on it. I was so pro Apple; I love their products, but seriously that is zero respect for customer. I bother buying an IPHONE because it's APPLE and I can't even run it with my MacBook Os Tiger 10.4.11. No excuses for Apple. Seriously... Mac OS Leopard 10.5 is not avalaible anymore how arogant can you get???

Anyhow... So what do I do now with my MacBook Os Tiger 10.4.11 ? Do I buy Mac Os Leopard 10.5 (obviously on the net) or the 29$ upgrade SL will work, even if I never had the basic Leopard? I just wanna know if going to the 29$ upgrade of SL from a MacBook 10.4.11 will screw my computer up.

Many thanks in advance and I send compassion to all Mac users...

Is there no way to just use the phone as a hard drive to transfer the song files over?
