How about not making the iPhone available on ALL carriers in the US.

Only AT&T and soon Verizon (no others)?

Meanwhile, Android takes over (good for them - some people I know have those phones and they are very good).

Fail....

IMHO, Ping was as much a victim of timing as of limitations in function. It launched while Facebook was dealing with its privacy brouhaha, so I'm sure some people thought, "Oh geez, a place that could potentially leak my iTunes account info? No, I don't think so."

What a stupid list. Fastest selling phone ever a fail? Sure.. idiots. And anyone saying "It was how Apple handled it that was a fail" is wrong too. Obviously, they handled it just fine. Otherwise people wouldn't keep buying it.

The way they handled the issue was a complete fail, just because it sold well doesn't change that.

Im still of the opinion Apple could release the iTurd and it'd sell by the million and be hailed as the most innovative thing of the year.

I cant believe Microsoft was hailed as the biggest innovators of 2010.

I don't use a case with my iPhone 4 and don't have trouble with .... hello, hello, ah, ... my reception. Actually it is pretty rare, I think it was over hyped as well, what phones don't have trouble? Anway, I agree about Ping, I never use it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

Yet the iP4 sold in record numbers and is the standard by which the copycats are measured.

The only "fail" was how incredibly far the media blew antennagate out of proportion. Considering that nobody has heard a peep about it for months now proves that beyond any doubt.

Exactly. This was a media thing from the beginning, so it's hardly surprising that the media would continue to trumpet it every chance they could. Other phones do the same thing the iPhone 4 does (though their attenuation location varies by phone), but since this was Apple, it got pushed by competitors to attack Apple. Gullible media types went with it, got embarrassed by Steve Jobs, and now have to keep pushing this as a big deal (even though it isn't) just to pretend they didn't get shown up as shills for competitors of Apple.

This will get repeated with the iPhone 5. I don't know what feature the competitors will trump up as teh fail, but whatever they decide it shall be, that is what the media will push hard. Watch for it next summer. It always happens.

Spot on.
Just because it sold great doesn't mean it wasn't a fail for that antenna issue. That being said it's still the greatest phone I've owned, ever. I just wish I didn't have to use a case with it.

So don't. I don't, ever, and it's absolutely no problem. I can't believe how long I put off getting an iphone 4 because of this ridiculous tempest in a teapot.

Stop all the social networking stuff, these things are always hypes and will end someday.

Invent real tech that is actually useful instead of making it possible to tell all your so-called "friends" what's for diner at your house or what song you're listening at or how bored you are or what the view is from your window right now or... (insert uninteresting stuff here)...

I'd say social networks in general are an epic fail although most people don't realize it. Most people are just part of the herd ... over 6 billion people on this little planet and most of them just want to look like the few rich and famous or the guy/girl next door.... pretty sad really.

Ha, sure. Telling people "don't hold it like that" was a great idea. I'd say that was the main thing that caused everything to lead up to an event where Steve had to talk to the press about it, which you could tell he hated.

If you could ask Steve I am certain he would not say it was "handled just fine."

I'd say social networks in general are an epic fail

Then stop posting here if you hate it so much.

It depends what your local reception is like. My iPhone 4 was useless at my work place until I got the bumper for it.

It's hard to tell sarcasm from abject stupidity these days.

Thanks.

Not it wasn't blown out of proportion, fact is the problem exists in every iPhone 4, but users know there is nothing that can be done about it so they have shut up about it.

And what made it worse was Apple trying to deny it!

I constantly use my phone without a case and don't suffer from the issue. I never started talking about it, let alone shut up about it.

I'm really glad I didn't have the antenna issue. My iPhone 4 has been perfect since I got it.

I'm saying that because I have to use the case to keep a signal. I can care less about Apple fan boys and haters...just speaking from my personal experience.

Take it you hold your phone different? Coz that's what Jobs ordered you to do, right?

Not a peep in the Apple discussion forums for months. No more YouTube videos either. No release of a Rev B that "fixes" the "issue". Just the occasional tired sarcastic posting of an Apple hater here or there. Same goes for the feminine napkin jokes about the iPad. Vaporized. These days the haters just sit in front of their screens searching, hoping against hope, that someone somewhere will come out with a decent product to compete with iOS devices. They cling to one device after another just knowing it is THE Apple killer only to have their fervent hopes dashed to the ground when the next generation iOS device is released and leapfrogs the object of their attention. Kinda pitiful really.

You're 1000% right. There's nothing that can be done about it so why keep bitching about it. Apple tried to act like it wasn't a problem then why give away cases?

if they themselves concede that "fail" may be a "pretty relative term" in this case, why make it #1? i mean, the Kin was the definition of fail, but they say they almost feel sorry for picking on it. umm, you titled the article "Tech Fails of 2010".

as for the iphone, i've used mine from day 1 with no cover and the only time i've ever had issues with the reception is in areas where my old iphone had the same issues. guess i'm a fail failure.

guessing bumpers cost a few cents to a dollar to make and thus giving them away free calmed the storm of people who "had issues" with reception.
I have had reception issues with EVERY phone I have ever owned. wherever I have lived and on ANY network.

The iPhone gave me better signal/reception than the other phones.

though sometimes when i walk in a room radios get static noise. ?

The antenna issue was a big fail for development. It showed how Apple was so secretive about the phone that no one actually held it in his or her hands. It should have never happened.

However, it was quite overblown and other than a TON of extra press, had no obvious effect on sales. When was the last time we heard about this issue since the initial wave? I almost forgot about it.

It was a fail, but not number 1. The phone more than made up for it.
