I went to bed when it was at 58 percent. Woke up and 8 hrs later with it at 7 percent. This can't be normal. I'm not even using it. It's just in standby. Help?
Why would Wifi kill it? Also, if its in standby and I turn it back on I see that 3G kicked in and then wifi comes back on
these aren't android phones. No need to do that. no need to turn off Wifi or any other silly thing. If you aren't happy with battery performance, go to Apple genius bar. They will replace your iPhone. If your battery is draining that much over 6-7 hours, yes its the battery...bring it back.
my ipod touch 2g drains the battery after a day with wifi on but can hold its charge for a week without the wifi on. note on both scenarios i did't do anything with the ipod
Try the suggestions that have been given first before worrying that something is wrong with your phone.
But why would this only happen when the phones been in standby for a long time? Yesterday it was charged full since 10am and worked until about 1am (normal use) where it was 58% when I went to bed
Are you in a bad service area where you sleep? My room is in a basement and when if I don't put my phone into airplane mode it searches for signal all night and kills itself (dead battery, it doesn't jump off a roof or anything).
They are. If you have an app running in the background that is streaming something that will surely do it. It all depends on your usage. Have you ever killed the apps running in the background before?
I closed all open apps last night. iPhone was at 98% at 11 pm. Woke up at 6:00 am it was at 89%. Got my 1st Verizon iphone Monday.
Sounds like something wonky is up with your phone.... I went to bed at 11 last night and my phone was fully charged 100%. I woke up this morning at 5am and it was at 95%. Don't know what is going on....
I just called apple and they had me do a hard reset and he had me reset my network settings. He said he would follow up with me later - very good customer support.

OP already called Apple. There is most likely nothing wrong with his phone. This is a simple problem with a simple solution that many iPhone newbies encounter.
Unless you have Skype and/or a program that isn't suspended for "multitasking" losing 53% of the battery in 8 hours, while in standby isn't normal. To the OP, I would do a full restore and set up as new phone, and see if the problem persists.
The ony apps that I use outside of the original iOS ones are like scrabble, doodle jump, flight control, doodle fit, flick golf, mega jump, slice it, the weather channel, facebook, 360 live, soundhoud, fox news, scorecenter espn, IMDb
