I am waiting for my iphone and use a plantronics 975 also, I hope this isn't an issue when mine comes in a week or so

Mine works better

Just info for you all having issues.

My bluetooth in my BMW is a ton better with my iPhone 4 than with 3G. In fact, 3G was so bad i was planning on forgoing bluetooth in my next car.

Hope another datapoint helps.

WHERE WE STAND:
1. Iphone 4 has bluetooth Muffled sound to Incoming calling party, outgoing calls
are for most part ok. When connected, quality and range of audio is very
reduced with minimal performance. Bluetooth device drops on and off while
paired.
Trouble pairing some devices that work fine with other phones and cars. Stereo
headphone devices range, quality very reduced for various makes/models.
2. Problem appears to NOT be any single make/model of bluetooth device.

3. Attempted Fixes:

B) Hard reset of iPhone4 -Holding Home and power button at same time..NO Help.
C) Complete Reset of iPhone4 with iTunes....No Help.
D) Switching bluetooth On and Off while on call....No Help.
E) Removing bluetooth device on iPhone (ignore this device) and re-pairing

F) Contacting Apple support with trouble ticket MANY Times....NO HELP.

connecting my 32GB black to my kenwood 6140 sucks when i listen to audio over bluetooth! it is very choppy and skippy

I have 2 eclipse blutooths plus my plantronics that work great with my Blackberry. I have a Nexus 1 coming tomorrow to test for a few weeks with the iphone thats coming on the 14th. So we'll see, I only use blutooths have not held a phone to my ears in I can't remember.

Hopefully this isn't the make or break issue

Still having the muffled bluetooth problem. Problem completely disappeared for 3 days. Talked for 3 hours on the phone one day with no problems. Got a call an hour later and the person couldn't understand me at all.

I am really starting to hate using those white headphones. I miss my bluetooth headset. And to top it off, got the white headphones caught on something today while on the phone. It pulled the phone out of my pocket and dropped it to the floor. Thankfully no damage to the phone, it had a bumper on it.

Im still having the same issue as well. Sometimes it is perfect other times it is terrible.
I even tried unpairing and repairing it and it did not help.

Hope they fix this soon, my 3gs was perfect.

Bluetooth & WIFI reception issues

I was having both Bluetooth and WiFi issues since 24th June. I am guessing there was an antenna issue.
I have BMW bluetooth, which worked perfectly with my 3g. 4 was much worse. Would not work if phone was in my jeans pocket. Only decent if I put the phone of the dash or in shirt pocket. Even then there was "crackling".
WiFi reception was also terrible. Would drop Wifi whenever I left the room my router was in. Same in our office. Walk 30ft to the other end of the office and it would drop.
Ironically, phone performance was perfect. Never dropped a call, and reception was perfect!
Went to the genius bar today and they gave me an instant replacement. Good work Apple!
Performance it markedly better with the replacement. Bluetooth seems fine in the car. Kept the phone in my pocket and it was perfect.
At home, I am now picking up both neighbours wifi, and I stay connected to my router all through the house.
So, my advice is, don't struggle with sub-standard wireless. If you think it is poor, there is probably a fault. Get the good guys at the apple store to replace it... Worked for me.:)

I had a 3GS and used the Plantronics Discovery 975 earsets, I have 5 of them, and love them. I even got them from Apple. Typically I could walk away 30 feet from the iPhone 3GS without any signal degradation. I use them in my office all day long and constantly use the iPhone's Voice Dial.

Now, with the iPhone 4 (with the Apple Bumper on it), people can't hear me (breakup/distortion) when I'm more than 2.5 feet from the unit, and the Plantronics units disconnect from 3 feet!!!
What is curious, is I can hear them fine, but they complain of the breakup/distortion.

I can't even keep the phone in my pants pocket because it's too far away!!!
Also the Voice Dial via Bluetooth earset makes more mistakes than correct hits.
:-(

This may become a deal-breaker for me. And obviously, I won't be able to use it in the car either.

Can others please report what distances from the iPhone 4 you are able to have a good quality Bluetooth earset call, and the brand/model of the earset?
If I'm able to get an earset that works excellent with the iPhone 4, then I'll keep it. Otherwise iPhone 4 goes back to Apple.

What is your experience?

UPDATE: After getting a really good hi level tech, we tried to reproduce the problem and record the system/data log. The issue disappeared. I did reboot the phone, deleted the existing Bluetooth devices and re-paired. Seemed to work fine, although I did this at work and not under the same circumstances where I experienced the issue. Will try to reproduce again under the same conditions.

I too have the Plantronics Discovery 975, and have noticed bluetooth signal issues, including when my phone is in my pocket...

I feel the issues are tied to ios4 and the iPhone 4, apple trying to save battery life. When I upgraded to ios4 on my 3GS the sound was better from my uconnect and I did not have to turn the volume so high which was better, but with my iPhone 4 the Bluetooth doesn't always turn on. I turn my phone off every night while charging and when I turn it on in the morning the Bluetooth does not turn on and when I go into settings, I cannot make changes to the Bluetooth settings because it is locked up. I have to turn the phone off and back on and then the Bluetooth icon shows up and everything is fine. This happens 2 out of 3 times when I turn the phone off.

I'm having the same exact issue. Call apple like I did. The more people that call will make them more aware. I'm wondering if this problem is under the radar because not too many people use Bluetooth.

I paired my iPhone4 (black 32gb) to my B6 A4 and it works just as good or better than any other phone I've paired with the car. The ringtone I have set for each caller even comes through on the main speaker... when I had the Nexus One, the incoming ring was just the standard ring from the car regardless of the customized ringtone.

Ok so the ringtone I guess now comes through the speakers! I thought something was wrong there for a minute.

But all in all my new iPhone4 is ALOT WORSE that my old 2g and 3g on my Kenwood Built in Bluetooth in my Charger. Mostly all calls the caller says I sound like I am under water or its all muffled. and my deck now doesnt show my outgoing and incoming calls in my log on the deck,

This new update for the bluetooth sucks!

We have 2 iPhone 4's and they work just fine as long as we don't use a bluetooth headset. I can hear the caller just fine but they say I sound really muffled and broken up.

I noticed this problem first when I upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4.0. I had no bluetooth problems before updating to new software. I thought something was wrong with my Jawbone headset. So I bought a Plantronics and a Blueant headset and still have the problems. So clearly there's something wrong with iOS 4.0 software.

Thought I would post another followup to my original post. I decided last night to downgrade my 3G iPhone from 4.0 to 3.1.3. Well all of the bluetooth problems are gone. So it is clearly software related.

I decided to return both of my iPhone 4's. They will be sent back to AT&T tomorrow. I decided that with the bluetooth issue and the problems with the proximity sensor, I just couldn't keep them.

I hate having to go back to using my 3G, but at least it functions properly as a phone. I just hope they get these problems fixed so I can repurchase in a few months. I have always bought the new iPhone on release day, but going forward I will be taking a "wait and see" approach from now on.

Mine is in HK on its way, I hope this fresh batch is trouble free

No luck there...my week 28 phone and my Plantronics 925 do not play well together. Repeated issues with echoing, popping, and static on my end, stuff that never happened with my original iPhone. Given that I don't have other hardware issues and already added a DecalGirl skin to the phone, I really don't want to take my chances with the iPhone exchange lottery. Hate to replace the headset, because it's only a few months old, but if the new iPhone works consistently with another brand, guess I'll be picking up a new headset.

Edit: Did unpair the headset and reboot the phone for the second time, and static issues are not present, though the echo chamber effect is still there and there were a couple short instances of garbling reported from the other end. It was tolerable for a brief call, but I wouldn't want to use it all day.

Bluetooth is a sketchy protocol to begin with. Ive seen no end of problems with many different combinations of devices.

With that said, my iPhone 4 definitely works better with all of my Bluetooth devices than my 3GS or 3G did. Calls are louder and clearer in both directions. My devices include a 2nd gen Jawbone, 2006 Acura TL with hands free, and an aftermarket Ego Flash in-car Bluetooth in our other vehicle.

However, in both cars I have had an issue develop where the caller on the other end could barely hear me. A hard boot of the iPhone fixed it.

I'm hoping I'm not jinxing myself here, but so far so good. I am on my 3rd iP4 and this one, so far is fantastic. I was having bad Bluetooth problems, the same as you guys. People couldn't hear me & it would disconnect and reconnect and disconnect & ...etc.

I received this one on Sunday and as of today, not once has it acted up. And just an FYI, mine is from week # 27. So it may be worth a shot to have it replaced. It was for me.

I've had mine for a day now, bluetooth when connected to my Plantronics 975 is for the most part good & clear during a call, though I did lose the connection on 3-4 calls yesterday with the phone within arms length,
Also it seems odd that when bluetooth is connected and a call comes in answering the phone disables the connection. A 2nd level tech support at Apple says they are hearing about these problems and the software fix is due in 2 weeks, by the end of July.
I've heard that exchanging the sim card at AT&T may help some connection problems though I don't know if this helps bluetooth.

iOS 4.1 beta includes a significant upgrade to the bluetooth stack including full implementation of AVRCP!

I'm an all day, every day BT user and both my IP4s work flawlessly with three different headsets. I'm amazed at call quality and distance bs my 3GS.

I just want to say I have terrible problems with my Plantronics 925 and my iPhone 4. Everytime someone calls me, I have to call them back in order for my bluetooth not to sound muffled and inaudible. It's by far the worst problem I'm having with my phone, and is a deal breaker for me.

Boo!

Was unable to face time Friday the 16th while talking on bluetooth, switched to speaker and the facetime connected :(
