Someone already pointed out that Sam's has a guest membership, so it's not that big of a deal.

Wal-Mart and Sam's have good wages?! Whatever drugs you're taking, you need to share.
In case you don't keep up with the news, Wal-Mart has been dinged by the FBI for unpaid OT. They barely pay above minimum wage and do their damndest to keep the hours of their workers below benefits eligibility. If you want a better view of working at Wal-Mart, read Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.
The hourly at Sam's might be better, but considering they've got the same management, I doubt it.

edit: Costco is famous for their great benefits and how well they treat their employees.
Yeah but you have to purchase a sam's club membership. Add that to the cost.

And how will Walmart/ Sam's Club continue to pay such good wages if they cut out so much profit?

LOL - It was definitely a sarcastic comment.

Is immediate activation required?

My wife's iPhone is supposedly eligible for upgrade around January 5 (according to the upgrade text message that I requested from AT&T). I am definitely going to upgrade her from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4 at that time. Does anyone know if you have to activate your phone immediately upon purchase? I'd love to get one of these at the discounted price if I can, since her line is so close to being eligible for upgrade.

Any ideas, or am I SOL on the discounted price?

Why the rush? By January 5 the price may drop to $100 or even lower. It's definitely not going up.

T-Mobile account is $39.99 voice + $19.99 UNLIMITED data and SMS.

I also carry around a work supplied 3GS locked to AT&T. Real world use shows voice and data availability is much better on T-Mobile with the factory unlocked iPhone than the iPhone locked on AT&T.

T-Mobile's service is much better than the trolls would have you believe.

I have friends that have TM service. Just like ATT service is better then the tolls would have you believe, it comes down to the area you live in. Where I live TM is crap. Every provider has issues somewhere in the US.

Ah... dude... unless you pay full price for ANY smart phone, they all carry a $2000 commitment. Or there about. Even on Verizon or any other carrier.

Silly point you're making.

Actually, it's not silly, it's correct. $2000 is far from "there about" and definitely not all. I pay $40/month or 480/yr. for a company called Sprint. I get 500 minutes, unlimited mobile to mobile minutes, unlimited data, unlimited texting. So for more a lot less than the iPhone, I get a lot more. Therefore, I must now call you silly.

Strategic price cutting smart in down draft

AT&T will probably take the subscriber lead from Verizon this season. Verizon looking at another big quarterly loss as Android ambitions prove fleeting.

You do realize that Android handsets are outselling iPhones, right?
