iPhone 4 Drop Test with Bumper Case

iFixyouri has performed a drop test on the iPhone 4 with one of Apple's bumper cases to see if there is much protection offered by the accessory.

We’ve have known for a little while now that iPhone 4 bumpers do not offer all of the protection needed because customers have called in an told us. Although it does not take a video by iFixyouri to inform you that dropping your new iPhone 4 on concrete is a bad idea, hopefully this video squashed any doubts as to the bumpers effectiveness.

The iPhone 4 was dropped from a natural standing height onto concrete. The iPhone 4 with bumper lasted only 3 drops before the front glass cracked. This was the same number of drops that it took to break an unprotected iPhone 4. It does appear the iPhone 4 hit the concrete face down for the last fall, so how it falls likely affects the chances of the glass breaking.

Unfortunately, there have been no comparison tests with more traditional cases, so we're not yet sure how much better protection a full case actually offers.

Presumably, the details of a specific drop (angle of impact, height of fall, speed, and surface it falls onto) are a lot more relevant than how many times the phone has been dropped. As such, comparing a single test like this to a single test of an iPhone being dropped until breaking without a case is nearly meaningless.

Let's face it. iPhone 4 is a great smartphone, but it has some minor design issues they will probably iron out in iPhone 5.

Yes, dropping a phone on concrete will eventually break it, but it's almost unbelievable it happens so easily even with the bumpers. So it's safe to say we have a bumper design fail as well. As someone else above said, they were probably designed to alleviate the signal issues anyway.

Funny, I've never seen a sapphire shatter on contact with concrete... helicopter windows however most definitely do.

The existence of bumpers just proves that Apple knew about the iPhone antenna issues before they released the iPhone 4. It provides just enough distance from one's hands and the antenna. What a coincidence. Apple now has a PR nightmare on their hands. And yet - the iPhone 4 still sells like crazy. Amazing.

The advertising value is enormous. A video, article and a link from multiple mac news sites for the price of one iPhone 4? That's an incredible deal for the website.

Of course, they're relying on sites so desperate for news that they think "phone breaks after being dropped multiple times onto concrete" is worth reporting.

Well, every material has a certain "bending". On impact, with a really fast capture camera you can see that a lot of "solid" things do bend and return to their original form after.

Glass is no exception, and honestly, the bumper "case" he had is just to protect from table scratches. If you ever carried your phone with keys you know pretty well what I'm talking about.

So, it lands flat, glass bends a bit which is ok, but then it hits concrete and breaks, big deal. You should have a real anti-shock case if you're that careful.

Why don't you drop it without a case on marble and say it breaks too easily then?

One day we might be able to have titanium with 99% transparency. Before that, you just can't be that stupid.

AFAIK, Metal elements only become transparent under high pressure. (Or if you see in XRays with the power in the order of Gigawatts)
