Isn't it odd how how newbies to the MacRumors forums seem to break their iPhone 4 screens, have serious antenna reception problems, and get yellow screens on their iPads and iMacs at a much higher rate than longtime members?

Ssshhh!!! Don't tell them! :p

For what it's worth (which may not be much), I have an iPhone 4 with a bumper, and I have twice dropped it onto the pavement/sidewalk from about 3' up, and it has no mark on it. In terms of both damage limitation and signal enhancement, it's excellent.

Another scientist at work. He should just show how he could crack his head open when he trips and falls flat on his face on concrete! But you couldn't find a bumper big enough he he... a total waste of bandwith!!!!

As has previously been posted, Apple's description of the bumper mentions nothing about any protection:

"Made of durable rubber and molded plastic, the two-tone iPhone 4 Bumper fits snugly around the edges of your iPhone 4 and gives it a splash of color. It's a fun and unique way to personalize your iPhone 4."

"Dress up your iPhone 4 with an iPhone 4 Bumper. Choose one of six colors — white, black, blue, green, orange, or pink — and slip it around the edge of your iPhone 4. With metal buttons for volume and power, two-tone colors, and a combination of rubber and molded plastic, Bumpers add a touch of style to any iPhone 4."

It's not odd at all.

Folks with an issue will always talk and loudly and repeatedly. Those without won't, unless in reply to a complainer.

So all these newbies had no reason to sign up until they had something bad happen. And then they did, probably on several sites.

But it doesn't change that for any given problem, the issue is rarely a major design flaw which is why the actual % is 1 or less. At least when it's Apple. When it's the XBox it's more like 70%.

Exactly. Most reviews are bad reviews because typically when people have success they keep their mouths shut. Others however feel the need to bitch and moan no matter what.

Got coffee this morning with a friend and he dropped his case-less iPhone 4 on the concrete. It slipped out of his hand (probably because it's a bit hard to grip) and got chips on the glass edges on the front and the back. These wouldn't have happened in my bumper. It obviously wouldn't have cracked all the way through in either circumstance given that it didn't without a case. All I know is that I'm happy that I have my bumper.

I've never understood why Apple just doesn't build a phone with bumper style protection build right in. In the old days of cel phones, I don't ever remember yearning for a cover.

In the old days, it was the concrete that was scared!

Gentlemen,

the Iphone is designed like a fine Swiss watch. Yes even Rolex watches break when dropped on concrete. The point is that they are building a fine device with style and utility for a pretty decent price. If you want a bullet proof phone then get a cheap Trac phone. I for one love my fine crystal glass phone and don't plan to drop it on concrete. If it does happen then I'll get the glass replaced. If you can't afford it then don't buy it.

Bumper should be made from hi tech
material like D3O not cheap rubber.

Check this video of Tech21 trying to smash an iPod touch with a band.

D3O apparently has its origins in custard powder and isn't anymore expensive than other impact resistant additive, except d3o has been marketed as a wonder plastic and apparently like with starlite the people and companies involved are just particularly greedy.... who would have thought. but apparently d3o isn't any good at resisting shock load transfer to the device itself. The material toughens up but it does noting to protect the internals and a whack is still a whack.

Starlite has all but disappeared into obscurity anyone guess that D3O will go the same way.

Now i must get back to my trial of mixing PVA glue with custard powder, food colouring and a bit of rubber.
