I wonder why people find causality where there is none. If a dozen phones had blown up immediately after landing in a plane, there's a pattern. If only one does, no pattern and no reason to suspect the plane landing had anything to do with it. What happens when you land a plane? You turn your phone on because it's been off the whole flight...unless you're a complete ass who keeps it on during the flight.

I've landed with my iPhone 4 probably 30 times on both domestic and international flights. Never any issues. So far this tells me that this was nothing but a bad phone that will hopefully be replaced by Apple. Bad phones do reach the market, I think this is nothing more than that. Probably a bad battery. This is news?

Battery ruptured/something shorted. Maybe due to changes in pressure during the flight. That's my bet. BAd part.

You're aware how ludicrous this sounds, yes? Please tell me how pressure changes of the sort seen on a commercial flight could cause this....

Is it just me, or does the logo on the back of the iPhone look like the Steve Jobs Silhouette version of the Apple Logo?

I'm thinking he just sat on it. Shards of the glass back then poked the battery, rupturing it.

I also wonder if there was an attempt to charge it with the wrong thing connected. It'll be interesting to see where the investigation ends up.

Worked for me

Yeah, was just thinking to myself that the burn seemed to correspond with the hole more than anything. Anyone got a lighter?

Something seems up with this. I've heard nothing about this in the local Australian Media, while usually the Fandroid users on my Facebook are pretty quick to pick up and repost stuff like this. I'm not buying into this just yet.

That said, this isn't the first iPhone battery fail I've seen, but certainly if it is true, it's the most spectacular.

Can a Li-ION battery get glowing red? To me, by looking at the corners, it would seem like the phone's been damaged before the actual heating.

Reminds me of a Chevy Volt.

Which so far no incident has been caused by the Volt directly. Either it was poor electrical work, defective charger, or improper procedures of securing the battery making it safe after it was damaged.

I did not think Li-ION batteries could be extinguished with regular extinguishing methods. I thought once they hit oxygen, they'd burn until out of fuel unless you had a specific type of extingusher. Granted the article did not specifically name the way to attendant extinguished it.

A complete ass? No, you're just being sensible. There is no evidence to suggest that electronics pose threats to aircraft.

It's just another silly rule to make us feel safe.

The user must not have had a fart app installed - as we all learned from South Park, the best way to avoid spontaneously combusting is to fart.

The passenger is obviously a member of IMF (Impossible Missions Force).
:p
This phone will self-destruct in five seconds.

I didn't think that the spy apps on the app store could be that realistic.
