A complete ass? No, you're just being sensible. There is no evidence to suggest that electronics pose threats to aircraft.

It's just another silly rule to make us feel safe.

I'm pretty sure that a few cell phones wouldn't cause much trouble, but 100 cell phones would. I think that's the idea anyway.

And THIS is why the flight attendants tell you to turn your phone off during the flight!

He must have turned it on a minute before the plane landed, when we all know it magically becomes ok to use cell phones again.

Who's "us"?

So you're admitting you're a paid Apple shill?
Dude, you have an avatar of an Android logo eating an Apple. Who is the paid shill? Maybe you?

You don't see the rest of us branded with corporate logos do you?

Why would a ruptured battery cause a fire? It wouldn't.

Tip: they're not filled with gasoline.

tip : batteries are highly combustible , especially lithium ones and they WILL catch fire and the smoke alone is highly toxic and will kill you.

a little research goes along way......

No, the radio frequencies are separate, according to the NYT article. The number wouldn't matter.

Michael Altschul, senior vice president and legal counsel for CTIA, the wireless industry association, said a study that it conducted more than a decade ago found no interference from mobile devices.

“The fact is, the radio frequencies that are assigned for aviation use are separate from commercial use,” Mr. Altschul said. “Plus, the wiring and instruments for aircraft are shielded to protect them from interference from commercial wireless devices.”

There has been no recorded incident of consumer electronics interfere with aircraft. But there has been no evidence that proves that they unequivocally don't, so the FCC has decided to err on the side of caution.

We accept risks much, much larger than this on a daily basis. If rules like this were applied to the world, everyone would live in padded rooms, hooked up to medical monitors, and all forms of transportation would be banned.

That may be true, but it's still the rule and people who don't turn their devices off because they think the rules don't apply to them are most certainly complete asses.

They're no different than the clowns who jump up when the plane lands before the plane taxis to the gate. Or those who decide to use the bathroom during takeoff.
