By the same token you have annoying apple fanboys here posting

"Take that Android"
"Android sucks even more now"
"Evo does not stand a chance"
"iPhone rules"

And the list goes on. It makes them look like a tool as well.

Imagine how much more tool-like they would look if they posted this stuff on an Android users forum.

Yeah. It's like that.

So, FaceTime only works on WiFi, but Calls only work on the Cellular Network. If I'm in a remote location that has internet (wifi) but out of Cell coverage, am I to understand that FaceTime will not work?

That is correct. They way they seem to have it organised is you need both 3G and Wi-Fi to make it work which if ludicrous.

The carriers we have here are more than ready and able to run this on 3G. Apple should modify it immediately so that if you're in wi-fi it uses that and when in 3G only areas it will use that.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm not talking about you or about all Android users who comment here. Just the trollish segment. Talking trash in a juvenile way about the "other guy" on that "other guy's" users' forum is obnoxious and rude. And by "trash" I'm not talking about reasoned argument - I'm talking about the flamebait being spewed by a small segment.

See our friend skyehill's commentary in this thread for a perfect illustration of what I'm talking about (and the numerous responses to his commentary). How about referring to the iPhone as a "turd Steve Jobs squeezed out from between his legs" or something to that effect. What is this, the 8th grade?

Sadly the mods appear unwilling to, well, moderate this useless type of commentary designed solely to agitate. Me, I'm no longer engaging the trolls directly. I'm going to rely on the moderators to bring this forum back under control.

See above.

Amen.

Imagine how much more tool-like they would look if they posted this stuff on an Android users forum.

Yeah. It's like that.

The mods would really need to do it both ways. There are some pretty bad apple trolls on these boards. While they might no jump out as much there are trolls of all types and to me trolls are trolls.

The blind trolling from some of the applefans like the examples I post earilier to me are just as annoying and the andriod ones. The mods would need to handle both.

I will agree with Laguna that there Is a population here he'll bent on stirring up the hive by posting nothing but crap against Apple. I aplolgise Laguna as I did read that as a sweeping generalisation and should know better.

Aside from all this shenannigans, I can say that iPhone OS4 is blazing fast in my wifes 3rd gem touch and even my old 2nd hen touch.

What an update! Now the wife is getting an iPhone i think I'll take the 32gb one off her hands thankyouverymuch! :D

Regardless of fanboy leanings or preferences, people should be excited about smartphone developments especially in the last year. With Android seeing break-neck development speeds which now looks competitive (particularly in the eyes of the general public now) with iOS, Google and Apple have to stay on top of their game to bring great new features to market, particularly UI for Google, and cloud functions for Apple (both could learn from one another :p )

We always know that Apple will come up with something new and unique with regards to hardware, so it's good for all smartphone users that we're seeing better screens (either Retina-esque LCD or developments in OLED) and other hardware features that mean that quality competition has to be high.

Competition is good

I'm still not sold on video chat as being a massive development, largely because it's already been done and has never been overly popular on mobile phones, but I guess we'll see. I loved the bit in the features video about being able to switch from the front and rear cameras, which I could do in my crappy feature phone a few years ago - but that's marketing right? :p That's not meant as a troll, I just love it when marketers try and sell something old as new (even if it is vastly improved)

Engadget has a nice chart comparing phones:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/iphone-4-vs-the-smartphone-elite-evo-4g-n8-pre-plus-and-hd2/

In summary, the iPhone does some things better than the Evo. The Evo does some things better than the iPhone. Android does a couple things better than iPhone OS and vice versa (though that's LARGELY subjective; don't know the meaning of the word? Look it up).

Great article that every fan boy should read. +1

So am I buying an iPhone? No. I can't reliably use AT&T for work. It just doesn't have the reliable coverage, so I have no choice but to stick with Android. Luckily there is Android though, because it's still very capable, and is certainly better than the drivel from Blackberry and WinMo.

Location is what everyone forgets today. One cell phone company might be good in one area and terrible in another. One should go with the company that has good coverage in his/her area then see what phone they offer before getting the latest greatest smartphone.

Funny story. I was in Fuji and my female friend was back in Okinawa and I wanted to try out the video chat on my phone so I called her up. She answers the phone just out the shower and sees me staring at her in her birthday suit. She drops the phone and runs to grab a towel. It was so funny, the look on her face when she saw me looking back at her.

Pics or it didn't happen.

You know I'd like to chime in on this point of yours because I got to thinking about it since the Keynote. I too I'm not to convinced about video chatting. I believe it to be a bit of a novelty and something for day to day use.

Anyhow in regards to video chatting being around for years on mobile phones I kind of need to disagree with you. Yes the feature has been offered by some carriers. I remember when Chinese mobile operator 3 came to Europe they were touting this feature. However it never got widespread nor was it really that functional, the video was small and very pixelated and just awful to try and use for conversations. On top of that you had the problem that maybe one out of everyone you knew had the ability to video chat with you. I have not seen Apple's FaceTime implementation, however if it's comparable to video chatting on a computer then it's a HUGE and drastic improvement on what little video chatting has been offered on mobile phones in the past. The second problem I don't know if Apple can address. It's good on them to offer to open the protocol up and make it an open standard. However I have a tough time seeing Nokia and other phone makers coming up just using Apple's solution.

Apple disappoints once again.

No 64GB option.
No price drop.
Wifi only and iPhone to iPhone only video chat.
Virtually identical to the Gizmodo leak that 1000s of people here hated.

A good phone but outclassed by the Evo 4G in almost every way. Screen does seem impressive though,

Really?

Let's evaluate these statements.

The iPhone 4 is no good because there is no 64GB option. HTC EVO 4G comes with 8GB and is upgradeable to 32GB - no 64GB option there either - I guess it must suck too.

No price drop. iPhone 4 is $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB. HTC EVO 4G is $199 for 8GB. So, no price drop for iPhone because it is already the same price for more memory.

Wifi to Wifi video chat only - True - although it is not a limitation of the phone, but of carrier bandwidth. Not a place where the HTC EVO really outshines it however according to ZDnet which indicated that the only useable video chat on the EVO was wifi to wifi as well. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/mobile-gadgeteer/hands-on-video-chat-on-sprint-htc-evo-4g-using-qik-and-fring/3363

So where does the EVO outclass the iPhone? It has a larger display, but with lower resolution - so the larger display doesn't buy me much except giving me a bigger and heavier phone with less actual pixel real estate.

You can get 4G on the EVO - If you happen to be in a 4G area (which not many people are). And you better keep a charger handy if you are using 4G on the EVO - as all reports are battery life is miserable

There is an 8MP camera as opposed to a 5MP camera. However, Jobs may get mocked for suggesting that MPixels don't tell the whole story with a camera, but it is absolutely true. The main limitation to a built-in camera in a phone is not the sensor, but the lens. I have a 1st generation Canon 300D with a 6MP sensor. You really think there is any way a phone camera with 8MP or 10MP or even 100MP will ever take better pictures than that camera? Not a chance. The lens is too small and doesn't take in enough light. Shutter speeds have to be considerably longer to compensate for that. Combine that with the fact that you are holding a phone awkwardly with one hand to take a picture (lots of shaking while you take the picture) - and adding a bunch of resolution to phone doesn't buy you anything because you are getting images that are too dark and blurry anyway.

So, where does the HTC EVO outclass the iPhone is nearly every way? Not seeing much...

From what I have seen of face times apple solution is not new but more taken from other things already out there.

As for video chatting on a phone I see it being nothing more than a novelty at best. It is just not functoinal. It is cool to look at and for minor things but never will be widely used.

Hell look at video chatting on a computer. For the most part it goes pretty much unused. It is cool but not widely used. Phone will be even less so.

Now the 2nd mic Apple put on the phone for noice cancellation is going to be really nice. My blackberry has one of those and it really cuts out a lot of the back ground noise. Compared to when I talk to my brother on his iPhone it picks up a lot more background noise than my girlfriend who is on the same phone as me (blackberry 8900)

People will start to notice that one. It is very hard to noticed until you talk to some one with out it.

...er back to the iPhone and civil discourse.

That didn't make any sense. Keep trying, though.

Actually, I'd be fine with 32GB or even 16GB internal memory if there was some sort of removable media (SD/xD card or even some proprietary *****). It'd be great to bring some more music / movies along without having to shuffle stuff around constantly.

Yeah, I know, I can buy a different phone blah blah blah. That's not the point.

While removable storage sounds nice, Apple wouldn't do that because it would create space. Anything removable (batteries) causes the need for more hardware around it and more holes on the device...Apple doesn't do that, and I for one am happy.

And it did make sense, as long as he was referring to the fact that you were being an ass in your response, yet still calling him out.

Black 32GB here I come! Sick phone, don't care if it comes to other carriers, ordering it ASAP on the 15th and will be waiting anxiously for it!

The quality and pixel density of iPhone 4 screen is impressive, no question about that. However, 3.5" screen is too small by today's premier smartphone standards.

It is disappointing that Apple didn't kick up the screen to at least 3.7", to make it on par with Nexus One, Droid Incredible, etc. You can make the resolution 1920x1280 - but there is still only so much information you can usefully read on a small 3.5" screen.

4.3" screen with 480x800 resolution can display significantly more readable information than iPhone's higher res 3.5" screen. I'd take larger screen and less scrolling over high pixel density.

The information capable of being displayed on a screen is directly related to how many pixels of resolution the screen has.

Try the experiment. Turn on your computer at home and open up a document. Make sure the document window fills the whole screen and zoom in so that only a portion of the page is being displayed. Make a note of how much of the page you can see.

Now, adjust the resolution of your display (either up or down, doesn't matter). With the new settings, see how much of the page that is now visible. If you lowered the resolution, you will notice that there is less of the page visible. Each individual character will appear LARGER on the screen than it did before, meaning fewer characters will be visible given that the screen size didn't change. The opposite will be true if you increased the resolution. Each invidual character will be smaller than before, meaning more characters will be visible. This only works if the document window is full screen in both cases, otherwise the changed resolution will just resize the document window as well. Lesson learned: same size window (i.e. screen) with higher pixel count = more information displayed = less scrolling.

Increasing the screen size without an increased pixel count doesn't increase the amount of information the screen can display, it increases the size of the information that is already being displayed. Conversely, increasing pixel count without increasing screen size means that each bit of information is smaller, thus allowing more information to be displayed at once.

Now, obviously you can increase the pixel count to the point that the information is so small that a person with normal eyesight can't actually distinguish the information. Somehow I really doubt the iPhone 4 will be in this category.

So, bigger screen size doesn't mean more information unless the pixel count is also increased. Bigger screen means bigger, heavier phone. It might be worth it if the resolution is correspondingly higher, but bigger screen and lower resolution is never better, unless your eyes aren't good enough to distinguish the smaller/higher resolution screen.

I just get annoyed with the people who think the more they type their opinion of "XYZ is far superior, you sheep are crazy" the more people will listen to them. They're the equivalent of the people in a debate who simply talk louder in an attempt to prove their point. It's tiring.

Sadly, since this place lacks moderation, it's likely to continue that way.

I love when I'm called an Apple fanboy in one thread, then in another an Android fanboy, Windows fanboy, etc. It seems to be socially unacceptable here to actually see the merits and drawbacks of the various platforms.

Though I'll admit it's tough for me to see any positives in Windows Mobile. :D

Can't say I've ever been accused of being an Android fanboy, but definitely know what you mean. I have nothing against other companies, just happen to usually like Apple's version of whatever it is better than other companies' versions. I mean this is MACrumors, I can't imagine the Apple hating on non-Apple sites.

Anyone mocking Steve Jobs for saying "megapixels isn't everything" is simply ignorant - he's absolutely right.

When he was going over the new camera system, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was like they asked me what I would do if I were designing the phone's camera system. The only thing I would have added, is some way to have a physical button for the shutter. Some people are apparently proficient with it, but tapping the screen to focus and the shoot the photo can be tricky. It will never happen, but a dedicated physical button for the shutter would be awesome. Other apps could access it to do whatever they wanted to.

I'm a professional photographer, not that anyone cares.

hey guys... did anyone else notice the little grid above the earpiece on the white iphone 4... i think it's the second mic? why is it not visible on the black? shadows?
