Mine is pretty thrashed, dropped, skied over, etc so it will be a backup since I am traveling for a year.

iPhone 4 looks great, pre-ordering on the 15th...

Someone will still buy it. I got enough cash to cover my iPhone 4 purchase from my 3G. I had like 15 buyers lined up after a couple days on Craigslist.

Agreed - two pieces of glass = double the potential calamity. And the fact the display is now laminated to the front glass means no cheap and easy fixes for a cracked or shattered screen.

I was hoping to use this new phone "naked" but it looks like I'll be doing the crummy case thing again. :(

Who knows, could get lucky and their statements about the glass could be true. On apple.com it's saying its similar to glass that's used in helicopter windshields and high-speed trains. That sounds pretty durable to me, as long as you're not prone to dropping your phone on pavement or something. I never dropped my 3G once so I'm going caseless...I'll let you know how it goes lol.

oh, ok everone... this guy has figured out the PERFECT RESOLUTION for any phone, so you can all stop working on it! just everyone make this one, because this guy KNOWS it's PERFECT. (do i need to add the ?)

and let me guess... YOUR phone just HAPPENS to have that resolution! how lucky! you got the PERFECT rez right out of the gate! even compared to screens you've never seen! amazing!

as soon as we hit that word "readable" or "usable" however... all bets are off. it hits the grey fog of subjectivity, and everyone can just screw off at that point. you don't know what i can read on my phone, yo.

your MAMA's gonna constantly scroll...

Lol nice post...some people are just ignorant. Idk why some people are on a Mac forum if they're just trying to find something to hate on at ALL TIMES. If you want to find something easy to hate on go to a Windows forum, GO AWAY most people don't want to hear it unless you have a legitimate argument. How is 480x800 PERFECT? The only way I would be happier with a worse screen is if the price was increased, but either way it was gonna have the price points. Maybe these people are jealous? Idk.

Oh and someone please post on how I'm delusional for thinking you're jealous that you just bought an Evo and got owned, especially if you don't even live near a 4G city.

You are an ****** troll. Maybe you should throw one down with your buddies who said that the iPad was 'gonna be a "fail."

64 GB? Get real. It's a phone. My 16 gig 3Gs still has ample space available. Of course, I don't live in my mom's basement and I have a life.

No price drop? If 199 ducats is too much, you might want to reconsider your career path.

WiFi only and exclusive iPhone to iPhone video chat? Try Googling "network congestion" you moron.

1,000's of Gizmodo readers hate iPhone4? Do you even understand that real people in the real world could give a fat rat's ass about you and your 999 nerd buddies?

If you're 'gonna bring it to the boards, please have something intelligent to say.

I'm about to sleep and I was too tired to whip out the tirade on this dude...thanks for doing it for me.

It does look fantastic but isn't enough to pull me from my Nexus. The good news is my wife will be joining club iPhone soon and it will be her first smartphone.

Good times for smartphone lovers!

Despite the numerous comments on here to the contrary I would have liked to see a 64Gb option. The whole point of the iPhone is that it's more than just a phone - put your music collection on it, app's, books, etc. If like me you have a large music collection the 32Gb doesn't go far let alone loading any app's on it. If they can put 64Gb in the iPod Touch then they can put 64Gb in the iPhone. I have to carry two devices around now - my iPhone and my iPod because I can't fit all my music on the iPhone. That kind of defeats the object of one all encompassing device. And before some of you jump in I don't give a flying f*** if you can fit your whole life in 32Gb, I still want the option.

No doubt they will release a 64gb version in the future... but they have NO NEED to do that yet as they know we'll all buy the 16gb or 32gb regardless.

You're probably right but I won't be upgrading until a 64Gb version is released.

The iPod Touch and iPad both have 64Gb versions so I guess the iPhone version will come but I would like to buy now rather than later.

The Japanese phone makers and cell carriers where able to get it to work. My friend was on DoCoMo using a Sony Ericsson and I on AU using a Sharp phone. It worked flawlessly.

Again the issue with video conferencing between phone makers is the collaboration between developers. Like I said before, Apple isn't willing to rest their fate on the programming of others. Adobe dragged their feet on Flash, Apple ditches it. It would be the same result if video conferencing was attempted between different phones.

Apple disappoints once again.

No 64GB option.
No price drop.
Wifi only and iPhone to iPhone only video chat.
Virtually identical to the Gizmodo leak that 1000s of people here hated.

A good phone but outclassed by the Evo 4G in almost every way. Screen does seem impressive though,

What phone has 64gig of memory available? Apple could have added this, but they would have had to make it thicker. With cloud-based iTunes on the horizon, the need for 64gig of storage on a iPhone will be minimum.

As for the price, it's a fair price. The EVO is $199 with 1gig of memory. A $32gig SD card costs around $115.00, so that puts the iPhone right on par with it's competitors.

Steve Jobs said they are working with carriers on a 3G solution to FaceTime. I'm fine with the WIFI only option for now. It's not like there will be tons of times to use it in the very beginning. It will take a while to get enough on the market to regularly use it. It will also take a little while for developers to release their own video chat apps. So, stop being too picky.

How in the world has the EVO "outclassed" the iPhone 4? Because it has a bigger (yet inferior) screen? HA! The EVO has an 8 megapixel camera and recorder, yet it's pictures look horrible when compared with the iPhone 4 and the video on the EVO is horrible, grainy, and choppy. Then you have the wonderful ****** battery life of the EVO. You gonna compare that to the 10 hours of WIFI or video viewing of the iPhone? And don't even get me started on the EVO's sluggish scrolling and UI!

There's a reason Sprint practically gives away it's data plans.........they lost millions of customers to Verizon and AT&T over the past 3 years and have been operating in the RED. They have to offer these rates to convince customers to get on their network. Don't be mad that you're on an inferior network with an inferior phone. You're better than that.......well, maybe! HA!

My message is clear because it was delivered via Sprint. See what I did there! And as I said, a lot of us post here because MAC RUMORS is more than just poorly made phones.

Yes and that is your opinion, it's not a fact.

I don't think that evo is well made personally. They should use glass like the iphone. But I don't come on here whinging about it.

You go on about apple fanboys but what about you android fanboys? You're just as bad.

skinnylegs:

Who cares that *you* don't want to use much space on your phone? An awful lot of peope do. The fact is it's not just a phone, it's an iPod, it's a portable media player, it's a general-purpose pocket computer. I want a phone that will replace my iPod Touch as well as my crappy HTC Touch Diamond, and I was hoping the iPhone4 would be it. And it still could be, just about, but I'd have the problem of agonising over what music to leave off, and of it always being full and so never being able to put anything new on without first choosing something else to come off.

I appreciate Apple have to make compromises and they've chosen a slimmer profile and/or longer battery life in favour of doubling storage, which a lot of people will prefer. Personally, I would have taken the old fatter phone if it could have had 64GB in it. They could even have offered a choice, like they used to with the larger iPods.

Besides, I was under the impression that Toshiba HAD produced a 64GB flash chip the same size as their previous largest, a 32GB one, and that Apple had bought a load - but that they are only using them in the iPad. If that's true, that makes this all the more frustrating.

I'm with you, Shaun, I'll be waiting and hoping that a 64GB version comes along; it seems quite probable.

My understanding is that the iPod has space for a second flash chip but the phone needs that space for telecoms gear, and so is limited to 32GB because that was the largest single chip available. As I said above, Toshiba have now managed to produce a 64GB chip in the same form factor, but I suspect the very popular iPad is using up all the supplies, or something!

I don't see why they wouldn't want to increase the iPhone's capacity further because, contrary to what others have said, it is not just a phone, and if the iPod Touch can sell 64GB models then so could a phone, given that it's basically the same device in most respects anyway. So maybe they'll wait until loads of people have bought 32GB iPhone4s and the pressure on the supply of 64GB chips from the iPad has eased, then release a 64GB iPhone4, thus selling loads of extra units.

It is not fuzzy. Everybody likes it. It has very high resolution - much better than iPhone 3GS. Is 3GS fuzzy?

Yes, the 3GS IS fuzzy, didn't you see the keynote yesterday? There is no comparison between the 3GS and the 4 in terms of pixel density. When you look at the icons and the text, it's a huge difference. Therefore the Evo is fuzzy in comparison too.

You don't see it yet because you are not next to someone with an iPhone 4. But as soon as that happens, you'll see the Evo is already out-of-date in this area.

I love how Apple is touting VideoCalling as something new or game-chaning. Nokia phones had it since 2003 and many ppl (at least in Europe) have been enjoying it ever since. That marketing gimmick is REALLY ridiculous on their part.

The phone looks fantastic, tho.

Oh and LOVe the fanboys here comparing iPhone 4 with Evo which btw lasts around 3 h on full blast. Evo is just an HTC phone with solid copy of Symbian on steroids. No innovation here.

The screen resolution really put me off the earlier iPhones. Compared to my HTC Touch Diamond the 3GS's screen looks like crap because it only has half the number of pixels. Admittedly, now I have an iPod Touch I don't really notice it, but what I *do* notice is how crisp the image is on the HTC - it's like how much nicer it is to watch an HD TV. So, I'm very pleased to hear of the new hi-res screen on the iPhone4.

Disappoints whom? Not anyone I've talked to. Not anyone who has seen it.

I haven't seen the EVO. Where does it work?

No it doesn't

Washin'ton Post don't seem to rate Evo to highly. Not a single unmitigated positive point and a certain amount of fear as to it's longevity.

So if you preorder the phone will it arrive ON the 24th? Like they did with the iPad?

Thanks,

Hunter

too bad

Here's why Android is infinitely superior. You don't like the stock keyboard on it. Fine. Neither do I. But guess what, I swapped it out for a great one (Swype). It's all about choices. I'd rather make my own choices rather than Apple deciding for me what I do and don't need. I'm mature enough to buy a phone and pay the monthly bills, so Im mature enough to decide how I want to use it.

Apple is going for the mass consumer. Out of my extended family of about 75 people, I can say maybe 4 would be able to swap out a keyboard. The rest would just use what is installed on the phone to begin with.
Apple goes for the "it just works" angle....no mod required.

Ok so yes I am going to waste a post here and most likely get lots of flames in the process, but damn there are a lot of whiny small minded people on here. So what that there is only 32gb. If you want a phone that can store more than that, go get one, this is clearly not the phone for you. So what if the Android is an open platform and you can tether without jailbreaking. If that is what you needed then clearly the iPhone 4 is not for you either. Why must these threads constantly turn into the nerds version of a dick length competition? If there is something that you don't like about the new phone that is a deal breaker, then go get a different phone.

Personally, I'll take mine black with 32gb in a Tuesday pre-order please!!!

It has to piss off HTC that their entire business is phones, and Apple comes along and makes the EVO look like old chunky tech. Apple just surpassed pretty much every spec of the EVO, all while making the phone thinner, lighter, sexier, and with a superior OS.

Any improvements to text entry?

I use my iPhone 3GS a lot for IM'ing. And mostly in portrait. It's not the greatest virtual keyboard in this mode. I'm constantly making mistakes and the auto-correct only guesses right half the time, if that.

I did briefly try the new Evo 4G for text entry and came away impressed. More screen area means keys are less tightly packed and fewer typos. And the Evo added a tiny vibration with each letter which I thought was a nice feedback mechanism.

I wonder if the iPhone 4G will have that same option?
