Exactly. The SHSH are needed to restore when Apple stops signing the firmware. You don't have to be jailbroken to save the SHSH blobs either. TinyUmbrella will save them if you are not or are jailbroken.

SHSH blobs are unique to a device and if another is used it's possible your device will be bricked.
I don't suppose a non-userland jailbreak will be coming soon? I don't think we've had one since 3.1.2, meaning that Custom Boot Logos have been a no-go on 3GS/iPhone 4.
