I'm going to try the restore from backup first. If the new phone seems slow (I highly doubt it) or weird things happen like not getting the new compass app or something I will go fresh. I sync my contacts with google, but would be nice to have the texts just for the heck of it.

I installed the GM version and noticed poor battery life (3GS), so decided to do a clean install of the official 4.0 build. Thankfully, battery life is back to normal :)

Everything else was restored, but the following things were lost:
Game high-scores, text messages, Phone Favourites, ring-tone preferences, Wallpaper.

Springboard organization was lost too, but that was not such a big deal because the advent of Folders has brought big changes to the way I organize things

Seems all I'll lose is data I've put into a few stock tracking apps and addresses in Navigon. The rest will be on .me except notes, and I don't use any. I think I'll start fresh.

if you start clean, how do you transfer your contacts, pictures and music to the new phone?

Pictures and music should be through iTunes. For contacts, you could use mobile me. You may also be able to sync them with Yahoo or Gmail or something.

If you start fresh, will you lose all of your camera roll pictures? Pictures that were taken with your iphone 3G or 3GS?

I think you can sync these pictures to your computer as well, could be wrong though I don't currently have photos syncing. Guess I should set this up.

It's much better to restore, because there are tons of preferences & settings that you may have forgotten about that you will undoubtedly want on your new phone: all the individual settings for each one of your apps, all of your high scores within your games, all of your text messages, phone call history, the exact placement of all of your app icons, all of your system preferences, etc.

If something goes wrong, you can always start over with a fresh reinstall in the future. But for now, just restore everything and see how it goes.

It's a much easier process for Mac OS owners. I've got Contacts, iPhoto, iCal and Safari keeping everything identical. It takes less than ten minutes to setup my new iPhone with a fresh install.
