The iPhone 5 is coming. Most likely this summer. The white iPhone (aka iPhone 5) has been put on hold, but it will reappear this summer with an official new name.

It's a fact!

Holy crap! Way to think small people..

I remember hearing the same type of talk at this time last year, and then Apple came out with the iPhone 4 with ALL the rumored specs, retina display/720p video/5mp cam/front cam with video chat/A4 chip/ 512ram/better battery, etc.

Yet everyone here thinks they are just gonna re-name the 4 to a 4S and fix the antenna with a slight speed boost and that's it???

Thank God Apple doesn't think like that! They've got competition now people, and Steve Jobs is not the type to let the iPhone become outclassed.

I agree with the OP. The iPhone4's quality continues to amaze me, even after 6 months of ownership. I usually get "comfortable" with something after a few months of use...with the WOW factor wearing off. However, I still get WOW'd every time I pick up my iPhone4. It truly feels like a piece of art in my hand!

My only complaint with the phone is the known issue of cracking glass when dropped. I'd like to see a better/stronger more crack resistant Gorilla glass design that required tremendous effort to destroy. My wife dropped her phone from a distance of about 16 inches off the ground. It landed perfectly wrong, and the back glass cracked all over.

Completely agree! The iPhone IS Apple. It's the flagship device, it has to stay above competition to keep Apple's arrow pointing upward.

With that said, Jobs and company will not release something unless they feel it is perfected! They are all about consumer experience/satisfaction. A useless work-around for something not done right won't ever come out of Apple's doors. Hopefully they are cooking up some good stuff for the next iOS version.

So, tell us: What would warrant a jump to iPhone 5 in your eyes? (now, remember the jump from 3GS to 4)

They're not going to call it iPhone5 if it's just getting some internal tweaks and software updates. Apple has (example: iPhone 3gs to iPhone 4) reserved a whole number jump for a complete redesign.

I don't think that they've got enough time to get a awesome update this time. As mentioned on this website they're working in a new final cut they've got lion to deal with and they said they worked on the iPhone 4 for 18months. If they wanted to release a really good one I think it would be quite rushed and they wouldn't release that, they'll just go for the speed bump since they know people will buy it and then hopefully we'll get the awesome features next year.

Different teams work on different projects at the same time. That is not an issue.

I have no doubt another iPhone will come out. I can't see them redesigning the form factor however there will be improvements. Theres gonna be like 3-5 Dual - Core android phones by that time which brings 1080P Recording. I can't see apple getting that far behind with their flagship device.

that is, iPhone 4 is 6 months old and in another 6 months its successor will usurp it. I have to say I can't believe I've had mine for 6 months. After that long I usually notice the problems and irritations of a device, but the iPhone 4 hasn't aged.

Neither is it showing the wear of a lot of use, nor does it seem worse by comparison to newer technology. I may later regret claiming this, but the form factor is timeless. Until the base materials are altered from glass and steel, perhaps to carbon fiber, I can imagine only subtle refinements to the design.

I wonder if another company can challenge Apple's superb hardware and software in the next 6 months. After that, I wonder how Apple will develop the iPhone.

The next iphone will be a refresh, a iphone 4.5 if you will. I agree with you on hardware, absolutely no one is making any solid phones out there, they all feel plasticky and cheap. But software iOS is behind a lot of innovations out there.

The first iPhone "3" was the second iPhone and named for 3G coverage. The 3GS was the third iPhone. They took one year to go to 3 to 4.

I have to say that my iPhone is holding up pretty well.

It's still the shiniest toy in the playground. No design rivals it. It's virtually undamaged despite my... considerable use.

I'm impressed. But I would be. I'm posting on an Apple fan site. I expect others might dislike its design or find it less hard wearing.

Poor them.

I agree. Mine has been naked since day one. Only cosmetic wear on the back due to surfaces but all in all great condition. My only regret is not getting the 32GB. I never imagined we would have games that would take up a gig of space right now! While I believe iPhone 5 is due in the summer, I hope Apple takes time to make an even better iPhone and ride out the 4 for at least another year.

I agree. I love my iPhone 4 and I could easily wait till next summer to purchase my iPhone 5. I rather Apple take it's time, instead of rushing out a device just to shut people up.

I dont see the iPhone5 in 6 months. I think the iPhone 4 would have a longer span than the 3gs. Apple states 110 Million iPhone 4's to be produced for 2011. That is much higher production than the 3gs (correct me if I am wrong.)

I think there is another solid year to year and half before announcement of the successor.

Mark

I disagree.
The iPhone 4 is the best iPhone so far but, instead it's been the most negatively spoken of all the iPhones released.

Holy.. just realized this topic is from Dec 2010, thanks for bumping OP.
