This will bypass the error 1004. After it installs the iOS4.1 update it sends your phone into recovery mode and says you have to recover it...so its installed, so why do you have to recovery it? You dont.

If you have a mac you can download this app called Recboot. (google it)

have your iphone plugged in, and open the app. click exit recovery mode and your iphone will boot right up running the new updated version.

As far as i know recboot is still only for mac and not windows based systems.

PS - I got the 1004 error as well

OMG THIS WORKED LIKE A CHARM

Thank you SO much!! I was seriously freaking out and have no idea how to access host files. I LOVE you

Your the man!!

if you ever edited your hosts file ...change it back. basically do the reverse of this to about step 5:

mac
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=7556

windows
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=7557

editing the file back to the original worked for me :))

Back when I had my white 32gb 3gs I edidted these files to try to downgrade because I messed up my jailbreak. I had completely forgotten i had done this, and then after this I ALWAYS had issues with restoring, updating or anything of the sort on my mac. I always got this error code!! I knew it was something on my computer because I was always able to go to another computer and fix it. It was driving me crazy that there was something going on with my mac and couldn't figure it out! I googled error code 1004, came across this post and the light bulb went off on what i had done about 6 months ago. I edited the host file BACK to the original settings using the instructions in the link and BOOM no more error codes popping up and my phone is already updating and syncing as I type!! Thank you for that reminder and links on how to fix!!!! Now my mac is back to functioning as it should and I no longer fear updating any ios devices on it!! Woot Woot!!:D

just in case anybody else runs into this.

if you have modified your hosts file in order to backup your iBBC and iBSS files to jailbreak, you'll have to set it back to the original in order to avoid error 1004.

Thanks. That was my problem :S

Ok I'm officially confused. At what point do you edit the host file to point to cydia's server? When you remove it, won't you no longer be able to bypass apple's signing? I removed the host entry to avoid the 1004 error but then got the 3194 (apple signature) error.
