the 3GS wasn't that different from the previous versions, but iphone 4 is different, so I'm not surprised by the demand. just wish my contract was ending this year.

I am thinking of upgrading early, it's only $200 more.

100% more RAM and 50% faster processor !== marginal

In the eyes of the every day consumer? Yes! Most people just look at the design and if it's new and looks different than the previous model, then it must be a hefty upgrade from the previous product. To most folks that read macrumors though, we all (hopefully) knew better than to assume the 3g to 3gs upgrade was marginal.

Okay, I'm willing to cut AT&T and Apple a little more slack now about the problems yesterday. I don't think anyone thought demand for pre-orders would be 10x's higher than last year.

And if you think of it, there were reportedly 10x's the number of pre-orders, but we know from various threads on Macrumors that there were a sizable number of people who tried but weren't able to pre-order and just gave up. So the actual demand might have been over 10x's as much as the last launch.

That's just amazing.

3GS was a garbage upgrade. Hopefully they don't follow the same pattern with next years iPhone.

Im pretty sure that it was a large upgrade maybe aesthetically it didn't change but the insides are what matter...just like what they do to the Macs every year.

Still no 3G in Kalamazoo, MI. I like how I was watching the US/England soccer game on Saturday, and the commentators joked about their 3 hour drive to the stadium, and how "They had 4 bars of 3G Service"

Which sucks, because, you know I pay for 3G data in a non-3G market.

I did not anticipate this much demand though, and am regretting not pre-ordering one. I like waiting in line though. Going to be an interesting next three weeks.

I only had the 3G for a few weeks, then bought the 3GS simply for resale value, but correct me If I'm wrong but whats 'large' about knocking up the speed a bit, adding video (should have been there before), oh oh oh, and copy and paste. Seriously man? Garbage upgrade. I'd be a little disappointed if the next one follows the same pattern. I could give a **** about the design changing every year, I don't expect that but for me, the 3G to 3Gs was 'marginal' at best.

Boy I have to eat my words if it turns out that you had to pre-order on day one in order to get the iPhone on the initial ship date. I would have thought you had at least three days to pre-order, so why fight the hassle of trying while the servers were tied up. But I guess the crowd knew better than me and that is why people lined up.
For what it is worth, once again Jobs announces new product at keynote, tells world, "This is fantastic!" Stock drops because analysts go, "meh?" Consumers open wallets and start buying. Analysts re-assess and stock goes up. Yes it is only about a 10% shift each time. But that shift seems predictable and takes place over a month. Buy some stock on margin or some cheap options and you could make some serious money after each keynote. Apple for the win again!

I considered the 3GS a major upgrade over my 3G. I will be getting the 4 once the initial wave passes. I'll be fine with the new iOS 4 on the 3GS and my iPad for another few weeks. Will be upgrading three of the five phones on my account. The other two will be 3GS phones, retiring two 3Gs.

The 3G owners who can't run important iOS4 features disagree.

But at the time, last June, the upgrade was minimal. No one knew at the time about iOS 4.0 and what its capabilities would be.

This update is substantially bigger than anything since the iPhone was launched.

I went from the first iPhone to the 3GS so I had a huge upgrade. I'm thinking about skipping this phone and waiting till next year. I have an iPad 3G that I use most of my internet surfing on and my phone has just turned back into a phone since I've gotten it. I think I'll just sit back and watch this time around. :p I will miss having the better camera but face to face is no big thing because no one else that I know (friends & family) is planning on getting the G4 and my 3GS will be able to take the new programming. I'm good.

All the iPhone 3G users who were pissed that AT&T wouldn't give them upgrade pricing last year and weren't willing to pay closer to full freight are upgrading now. I think that is causing a lot of the movement.

exactly, what did they think was going to happen? All of us iPhone 3G users that are now eligible to get this for less than $100 (subtracting out the resell value of the 3G) have been waiting for this.

Ramp it up Steve!

WHITE iPHONE 4??????

When will the white iPhone 4 be available????

Why has Apple been completely silent on this????

There was also a significant upgrade to the hardware of the iphone 4 as well as software upgrades that would make it unavailable for a iPhone 3g to obtain as well.

This was also 2 years after the 3g, in which most people who saw a upgrade from a 3g to a 3gs insignificant.

All the early adopters who went from...

Original iPhone
iPhone 3G
skipped iPhone 3GS because they weren't eligible for the upgrade.
iPhone 4

on the other hand there are also people who went from...

Original iPhone
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4

due to the early upgrade eligibility granted so "graciously" by AT&T.

This is the first time I've bought an iPhone since the last two I had (original, 3G) were hand me downs from gracious relatives or friends. The retina display, 720p video camera and A4 is what did it for me. After using the iPad I can say that that chip screams!

The iPhone 4 seems much more than the simple hardware bump that 3gs got when you compare it.

I'm getting 600 more mhz (assuming that the A4 processor is 1ghz), a 3.6~something megapixel bump on one of the cameras, led, 2nd camera lens, 2nd microphone, extended battery life. So this is so worth it for me. I will be there early for the iPhone. Even if I reserved it. I need 2 of them, but was only able to reserve 1 on my apple id. My wife was too lazy to reserve her own so I did it for her. I want the white one.

Garbage?

Faster processor
Faster graphics chip.
Faster network.
Twice the RAM.
Better camera, with video recording.
Longer battery life.
Nike+ support.
Compass.

If that's garbage, then feel free to send your garbage around to my place for some loving recycling!
