iPhone 4 owners that wanted to upgrade - any 2nd thoughts?

So it's not possible to upgrade without signing a new contract? I just want to pay $449 and not get into another contract.
 
Since I'm not eligible for an upgrade until December I'm convincing myself to wait until the new iPhone instead. I have a feeling once I'm eligible I will probably upgrade anyhow and just give my iPhone 4 to my wife.
