Mine too are being sent sideways with my iPhone 4. Same pic taken with my 2g is fine.

Gotta be a software bug. Never had this happen with my 2g, 3G, 3GS.

Sends it sideways ever frickin time.

I phone 4 pics being sent sideways.

Hi all: Well, after fussing with this picture in portrait deal going sideways, there are two options that I now know of to fix the problem. 1.) Take all your pics in landscape mode. Then you can send them to pc's and other e-mail address and they will come out just fine. Remember, when holding the iphone 4 in landscape mode, keep the home button to the right when shooting for a perfect shot. If you put the home button to the left, the picture will be upside down. 2.) If you still like to take pics in portrait mode, then you should download an app, from Itunes, called BEST CAMERA for $2.99. It is highly rated, even by an Apple exec. Well I just got finished downloading the app. I took my picture, keeping the camera in the traditional portrait mode, through this app. Good news!! I sent the pic to my aol address and this time, it was perfect. In addition, I also sent it to my Facebook page, and it was perfect. So, this app was the answer to my problems and I thank the writer on another site for the recommendation. So, I am not going to worry about this anymore. I went to Apple today and they all had different responses to the problem, and most never even heard of the complaints. They basically blamed it all on other things, outside the Apple world. Good luck to all of you. Technically, I do not know the ins and outs of how it all works, but orientation has been changed and it works.

pics sideways

I had exactly the same problem. My 3 G was perfect and now with the iPhone 4, I have problems. I wrote a long paragraph about how to solve it, below your message. 1.) Take all pics in landscape, which is a pain, but then they will be in the right mode. Make sure the home button is on the right, because on the left, the pics will be upside down. 2.) This is the one I like. Download BEST CAMERA from I Tunes for $2.99. Open the app and take your photos from this app. In portrait mode, it works perfect. I send the pics to my e-mail address at aol and Facebook and now they both work fine. So, I am finished messing with this problem. Try it out and you won't have any more problems. All the best and good luck.

Photos taken with the native camera app are being sent sideways. While photos taken with any other camera app (camera+, hipstamatic, ect.) are being sent fine. Weird.

seems like i have posted this 5 times this week!

I read an article that said apple is using a new method of tagging the pics orientation. certain mail providers are not recognizing this new tag thus showing an incorrect orientation. Can not find the link but I am sure I read it here somewhere

This happens to me as well. I did a few tests by emailing myself some pictures that I took with the camera app.

Sent a pic to my gmail account and to my work email. Mail app on my mac as well as gmail via the web show the picture correctly in portrait mode. In outlook, the pic shows sideways.

I saw some others posting about the way the exif data is written to the image for orientation purposes. Looks like outlook doesn't use that data as intended and is showing my pictures all screwed up.

What was the purpose for the change? It worked fine in the past, not sure why Apple decided to fix something that wasn't broken.

Pics I take in landscape mode all look fine. In all three mail clients I used for the portrait pic.

its sad that i take a portrait pic with my iP4 (iOS4.1) and mms it to my wife who has a 3GS(iOS4.1) and it ends up sideways...

looks like even Apple isn't following their own standards.

My pics don't come out sideways but upside down instead when I email them. lol

My VIDEOS AND PHOTOS are always upside down once they leave the iPhone. If I play the videos in Quicktime they are fine, if I use any other player they are upside down.

Now it seems I am using the phone "upside down." When I do videos I like the volume buttons on top because I use them to start/stop videos (jailbreak app called Snappy) and take photos using the volume button as a photo button. However if Quicktime Player knows the right resolution and no other program does it seems strange.

I am having the same problem, both with a iPhone 3, and with iPhone 4, but ended up with the problem after "upgrading" to 4.XX.

I have been in touch with Apple tech support, and they now blame it on the rest of the world. Here is the answer I got:

According to what info they have provided it sounds like the industry standard for EXIF data was changed in May/June of this year and that 4.0 which was released at the end of June complied with that change. From what I understand any change in how mail clients like Outlook view pictures reflects that change in EXIF data not how the iPhone itself sends the image.

If I understand it right, they are saying is that ALL Windows, Youtube, Facebook and other non Apple users should change something because Apple changed something.

Does this makes sense?

I personally am not buying it. I am ready to return my iPhone.

Solution for emailing picture from iphone with correct orientation

I was also frustrated by this issue. So I developed an app that lets you email a photo so it will have the correct orientation when the person receives it on their email. Search for Rotate Mailer in the app store.

The problem started with iOS 4. Apple stopped saving images with the correct rotation (instead they just save the metadata with rotation instructions). Unfortunately, none of the web mail sites honor these instructions.

You can also avoid the issue by always taking pictures with the 'volume buttons downward'. But sometimes you want a portrait (not landscape) picture. So, Rotate Mailer comes in handy for those times.

Found out how to get around upside down photos email

Hi guys I figured out if you message your pics and then just choose your email they will still email them to you but they will not send them upside down. Not sure why but it has worked for me multiple times. If i email them they are upside down but if i click message and then type email address they are the right way :)
