Yes.
When TU is running or your hosts point to Cydias server the phone cannot communicate directly with Apples servers to upgrade the baseband version so it leaves it as is.

Hence this is why the update never really "finishes" and you have kick yourself out of TU? Correct?

What iphone model and what firmware are you on or trying to go to?

Oh, so it varies depending on that? I'm on iPhone 4 4.1 and am waiting to go to 4.2.1 whenever the untethered JB comes out. Am I correct in assuming that since the untethered JB isn't out, there is no PwnageTool manual for that just yet?

Thats correct.
You gotta wait if you want an untethered JB for 4.2.1 cause we're not sure how it will be implemented and thru what program. It could be pwnage, redsnow, or maybe a whole different program.

I see. Makes sense. Getting ahead of myself I guess. Thanks.

You just contradicted yourself. I'll bold. So which one is it, yay nor nay?

Apologies for the confusion. I did not use Tiny Umbrella when upgrading from 4.1 with the 01.59.00 baseband. After the phone errored with 1013, I had to THEN use Tiny Umbrella to kick it out of restore mode.

Previously, you had to have Tiny Umbrella running when upgrading to preserve the baseband. This wasn't the case here.

This what I don't get. Why nobody has tutorials like Iclarified or any other trusted sites. I can see it getting by for a day or so but still nothing. Oh well I am waiting for the untethered jailbreak.

I'm going to try this as well since I don't rely on unlock but want to preserve BB in case of future unlocking endeavours (I might move).

To confirm, since I'm relatively new to all this:

I'm on 2.14.10 (or whatever it is) with 4.1, and jailbroken with greenpois0n. I will update to TU version 4.21.01, and iTunes to 10.1. Plug in iPhone, save SHSH in TU, click shift+update (not restore) in iTunes, let it update, close the error windows, close iTunes, and exit recovery with TU.

Is this all correct? I leave TU running the whole time, but don't bother with that Start TSS server button? One more question: can I restore my phone in iTunes after the update (running 4.2.1 with 2.14.10 and not jailbroken) while keeping the baseband after this? Or will restoring update the baseband? How about going to erase all settings and data in the Settings>General>Reset menu on the iPhone? Thanks and if I get a reply to this post confirming the steps I will try it and report back.

I think that if you restore with 4.2.1 it automatically updates it. I guess in order to restore you'd have to downgrade and then re-update.

I'm interested as to whether or not the process you described is correct though before I do any updating myself.

Since I have no need for an unlock I thought I would try this and to my surprise IT WORKS! I am on 4.2.1 with baseband 1.59.00 I can post a screen shot if not believed. It gives the usual error in itunes and tinyumbrella kicks it out of recovery. Im busy now using redsn0w to jailbreak it. Im going to give the tethered jailbreak a go since my old 3GS on 3.1.2 didn't really bothered me being tethered. If it does it can easily go back to 4.1.

I'm glad I'm not a liar and I'm semi-helping the community out. Thanks, BlueKhufu for the back up! Enjoy that preserved baseband people.

I think the weirdest part of all this is that Tiny Umbrella does NOT need to be running at all when upgrading from 4.1 with 01.59.00. Yes you need to run it to kick the iPhone 4 out of recovery, but why don't we need to run it the whole time? Why doesn't the BB get updated when we update to 4.2.1?

I didn't have tinyumbrella running, however I have changed my hosts file to point to cydia rather than apple.

Your hosts are probably pointing to cydias server and not to apple.

Actually TU was never the only way to preserve your baseband. As already pointed out the only reason it worked was that the phone was unable to communicate with apple at the point where the baseband was being updated.
the three methods were 1. Tiny Umbrealla 2. Point host files to Cydia. 3. Unplug the internet after the restore successfully starts.
They all achieved the same results prevented the phone from communicating with apple and resulted in an error that required the phone to be kicked out.

I had not seen this thread before but surprised that everyone doubted you. Notcom confirmed at least nine days ago that update worked and not restore to preserve the baseband.

But you have either/or, correct? In order to preserve baseband, it has to be one or the other when you update to 4.2.1 and then kick it out of recovery.

Are you able to downgrade to iOS 4.1 if the baseband is preserved. Not sure if I want to try this yet w/o an untethered unlock but just exploring options.

Yes, thats correct.
You gotta have one or the other.
To downgrade firmware you need shsh's for that firmware version example 4.1
Just the preserved baseband will not do it.

All the SHSH blobs are saved in TU & Cydia already. Currently on JB iP4 on 4.1.

Thanks!
