Nope. Completely FALSE. I have a Griffin Reveal case on it now, and it has a rubber border around the entire metal rim, and guess what? It STILL drops reception in your hand. The Bumper does NOT solve the issue.

THANK YOU!!! At least this alludes to the fact that it isn't a design fault (in terms of simply shorting antennae), and hopefully localised to a batch of devices or a software issue caused by the reception search protocol

Those with issues, please try bridging the gap with metal (paper clip, aluminum foil, etc) and report results.

Has anyone else spoken to apple or AT&T and got any sort of response?

Yeah, me and my buddy were on the phone with them for over an hour until my phone died, and they re-activated his phone, and made him restart, etc, but to no avail. They were baffled. They also made it a point that they had not heard anything of this issue. When we mentioned Gizmodo so they could see it was more widespread than isolated they were unsure of what we were talking about. You folks need to get on the phone and let them know whats up otherwise it won't get fixed as soon as it could be.

Whoops! The fact that yours is fine means almost NOTHING if 599,999 other iPhone 4's have the problem, dude.

But I sill want to believe that they will all be fine...

Whoopes! His phone is the same design as the other 599,999............
Mine seems to be ok.

I really am having trouble w/ Gizmodo stuff as of late.. since the whole iPhone fiasco it seems like they are bitter about things and they're working to throw as many things out as they can about anything Apple does...

Is that a question or a statement? lol

I have a question:

If I buy this phone tomorrow and decide to return it within 30 days because of this problem, do I have to pay a restocking fee, lose my upgrade eligibility, or have to stay in the new 2 year contract I start when I bought the phone? In other words, if the problem turns into something major I don't want to deal with, can I return the phone and go back to my 3GS and have everything back the way it was before I bought it?

It's still an unadvertised defect. You shouldn't have to pay any restocking, loose any upgradability whatsoever so long as you cite this as your problem with it (and they don't issue a fix) - I'm still getting in line early tomorrow to pick mine up, extend my contract... but if it's not functioning as advertised; you bet I'll cancel everything.

Reader Tobias directs us to this article, in which a Danish professor who's an expert in antennas, predicted that human touch would interfere with the antenna, because it's on the outside of the phone.

Update 12: TotheFloor's video shows what happens when he's in a call. When the phone hits 1 bar, he can still make a call, but not when it's "searching for signal." He says when he's in a call and the phone drops to 1 bar, the person on the other end can't hear him.

apple should include bumpers with the iphone 4 lol

Tried again on a call and lost all five bars to no service and back up to two bars. Threw on my old incipio rubber case and made another call and lost NO bars through the entire conversation.

My 16GB does NOT have this issue at all. I tested it 5 diff spots in the house. All have full 3G coverage.

I DO however have the original plastic film still on the back on the phone. Maybe this has something to do with it? Probably not, but it's worth exploring.

makes sense because for the first time, apple made its own cases

makes sense, on older cell phones certain areas when touched reduced signal by a lot

but this is 2010, sad Apple

A BUMPER WILL NOT FIX THE ISSUE.

I have a Griffin Reveal case on the phone. It has a rubber "bumper" around all the metal, covering it all. The signal still drops with i pick up the phone with the case ON.

same things folks. It's NOT a skin on metal issue.

IPHONE 4 OWNERS DONT FRET!!!!

I have a iPhone 3GS on Rogers Network. I can confirm fully that when I fully hold the phone with iOS 4 installed I go from 5 bars to 1-2 bars.

Seems like its definitely a Firmware problem. Though If someone with 3.1.3 can confirm it doesnt happen to them, then we're in the clear and a simple patch will fix it!

you should try taking a picture using the flash

;)

Whats fail here is the OP, apple already addressed this saying there's a issue with the software displaying incorrect signal strength readouts and that calls are unaffected.

If you read this thread, you would know that CALLS ACTUALLY DROP! The signal bars drop and drop until you get the phone to say Searching.

interesting

I got my phone to do this once, and haven't been able to reproduce it. Interesting thing to note, I have an AT&T Microcell, First the bars drop on the Microcell, then it bumps over to the Macro network, and starts dropping bars again. I have tried to reproduce it on video with no luck. I will keep trying though. :D Another interesting thing, my first phone call on my iPhone 4 was my first dropped call in years. I looked at the phone to see it had dropped off the Microcell and had one bar on the Macro network.

As I stated, I did the same thing (albeit with a different case) and it solved the issue perfectly!
