this def affects more than just bars. If I dont have a really good signal it drops service and the call fails.

Ok this is bad. I set it on the table, full bars. Immediately pick it up and it slowly goes down, down, down. In fact, the last 2 tries, if I hold it for a minute it starts SEARCHING FOR A SIGNAL! I totally lost ALL signal. I have reproduced this NO SIGNAL 2 times in a row and go all the way down to no bars consistently.

This could be a nightmare.

to all the people saying its a cell phone issue and not an iphone 4 issue, i have an evo and i can cradle my phone with full signal and still have full signal with my hands covers the entirety of the phone except the screen

same with my blackberry, blackberrys have the best signal reception

This is also happening to me. I hold it and the signal goes to Searching... then when I set it on the table, full bars 3G.

Calling the Apple Store...

why is everyone so worried? If this is indeed a hardware problem Apple will bite the bullet and give us all new ones. AAPL is going to plummet and we'll all have the opportunity to buy in on the DIP.

So then how would putting the antenna further outside of the phone make it LESS receptive? Obviously we cover our antennae on all our phones with our hands.

The whole metal band acts as a receiver, so I'm finding this to be a little too bizarre.

After some time testing this, yes it does in fact drop your bars.

However the reception is unaffected. Almost like a visual glitch. I've yet to have a dropped call and loading up apps that require internet connection are a breeze even with a misleading 1 bar of service.

I can make it fail every time during a call, and I can make it fail prior to making a call, which renders the ability to call or receive data impossible. It's not a visual problem. Its major.

So let me get this straight.

The bars go down, but folks are still able to make calls and do speed tests, the phone still functions properly.

So how is that not a software issue?

Speed going down and call drops does not equate to "phone still functions properly".

Whitney Houston, we have a problem.

Such a depressing thread. This concerns me more than the yellow pee pee stains on the Retina display which I probably might get too knowing my bad luck. I still use this phone as a tool, and if I can't get reception at all, I might as well buy the next iPod touch since it has no contract requirement. If AT&T wasn't bad enough.

Mandatory case purchase tomorrow even a cheap one. This sucks! At least my expectations are lowered, but still. What a downer.

This one doesn't seem like an easy fix. They will blame AT&T probably lol

With some phones exhibiting this issue and some not, its time to start comparing serial numbers if you ask me.

I just restored from my jailbreak. My iPhone 4 now displays reception in db instead of bars. I can confirm that the db DOES NOT CHANGE when I cover these areas yet the bars do. My reception here is crap no matter what, but its crappiness isn't affected by how I hold it.

I think we are pretty lucky this is so reproducible. remember back when you could hold your TV antenna (if you are old enough to have had actual antennas on TVs ;) ) sometimes it helped, sometimes it made it worse. This seems pretty consistent.

One more followup:

What we really want to know is if anyone else is seeing this symptom?

It's not so much of an issue to us about the masking raw reception (we do know about that), it's the sharp decrease when one comes in contact with the antennae.

Yes... Just unboxed mine... Calls drop and break up when using the phone.

oh so you were one of them huh, what made you switch sides? *holds lamp over head* WHAT AREN'T YOU TELLING US?! WHERE WERE YOU THE NIGHT Gray Powell lost the iphone 4 at a bar!? WHERE!

Trust me, AppleCare Agents have it rough (think of us as the pawns of the company... well actually the contractors are worse, but lets not start that)

and I was an intern there, so that is why i Switched sides.... (besides, they were wasting my talent as a software engineer :p)

The number of antenna strength bars displayed on my iPhone 4 goes up and down even when it's just sitting on the the desk. And, what a coincidence, the number of bars goes up and down when I'm holding it my hand.

I've used my iPhone 4 for calls several times today, both holding it in my hand and while not holding it in my hand (connected via Bluetooth to my Infiniti while driving around in the Infiniti). Call quality was perfect and I didn't lose the connection or have any issue whatsoever.

I don't see any yellow blobs on my screen either. But that's another topic.

And I'm sure nobody will get the iPhone before the 24th. Right?

It could be a user problem, with the person using the phone not grounded. Someone needs to try this, while touching something like a sink pipe or your electrical ground for your house.
